GH3 When did you order your GH3?

I just received my camera today from Henry's and I must say it is AMAZING!.

Are you just online and could do me a favour: Could you please test, whether the OLED reacts also WITHOUT actually touching - just by approaching extremely close to the screen (e.g. for focussing) ? - It's for focussing with the touchscreen but without actually directly touch the screen. It works with my tablet PC's touchscreen about 1mm above the screen. That would be great for macro etc. with the GH3.

Couldn't you do even one better by using wifi and your phone or tablet to touch focus?

Of course, but if the touchscreen worked without actually touching (as the touchscreen of my ASUS Slate), it would have been easier, faster more practical in many situations. But I have been told, that the OLED of the GH3 has to be touched to move the focus-point :( . That's a "first" discovery... maybe it depends on the type of pen one uses and maybe there is one that provides enough electrical charge to move the focus point even if that pen is not yet touching the screen. - Sorry guys for OT, but J.F.R. was online and I was looking for a fast answer...

So I'm new here, but it sounds like I was a sucker for pre-ordering from NewEgg in early November, and thinking I might have my GH3 around launch. Guess I will have to remember Samys for the GH4. Jealous of all the ACTUAL GH3 owners, and can't wait to be one.

How are US based orders looking right now? I'd really rather stick to one of the big stores where I have an account. Like B&H or Adorama. Even Newegg, but I hadn't really thought of them for buying a camera until I read matdave's post above this one.

Unfortunatelly, i talked to sammys camera and like i thought lady from credit card department had no clue about inventory. They dont have it in stock right now. So i had 2 orders open: amazon placed october 24 and sammys placed december 4th. We will see...

FWIW, we didn't pre-order as we weren't looking at the GH3 initially.
We had to make a quick decision because of an unexpected and immediate multi-camera, multi-location shoot this month that needed a couple of slo-mo cameras as well.
I jumped onto ebay last week and there were two available from National Camera - paid a couple of hundred bucks premium but that was more than fine, and they came with Mack Diamond warranties.
There are a few on ebay, for just a hundred over retail.

Not sure about that keylight. I have a G2, so the GH3 is a huge upgrade. Plus the GH2 came out 2 years ago. The main reason I want it is for the weather sealed body, and the 1080p60. I live in Nebraska, and hate taking my G2 out in bad to moderate weather.

You're right. Going from a G2 to a GH3 is a big jump. Although that's not quite what I was thinking about with the "upgrade dilemma". More along the lines of upgrading from a GH2 to GH3. Certainly, the weather sealed body of the GH3 is nice (as are other changes). I too hate taking my GH2 out in bad weather too, and have done so several times over the past two years. But each time I take precautions and the camera's still working and delivering. I suppose I'll upgrade from my GH2 when (in order of likeliness):

  • it stops working/develops major operational issues;
  • it gets lost/stolen;
  • 1080p120 or 4+ stop increase of DR;
  • Clients start asking for things I simply can't deliver with the GH2 (or my other camera); or
  • Panny sends me one Gratis

I doubt either the 1080p120 or 4+ increase of DR is likely in the next upgrade (GH4/5), but I suspect it's more likely than a client asking for something I can't already give with the gear I've got. That's sort of the crux of the upgrade issue for me.

Ya, I just don't think 2 years is all that bad... Cars do it every year, and apparently iPads do it every 6 months now. I don't think you are necessarily "expected" to buy each version, and a LOT of new innovations can come out in a 2 year time frame. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think it is anywhere near the industries' upgrade cycle (e.g. Canon).

You know, it's funny. On the one hand you have people complaining that we're force on an upgrade treadmill. On the other, the GH3 is barely out, and already people are screaming for GH4/5 because the GH3 doesn't have X, Y, or Z, or they need better A, B, or C.

Back in February, I actually started a thread here that was titled "Why do we need a GH3? Isn't the GH2 enough? What should Panasonic do for GH3?" It ran for 27 pages, and it was quite an eye opener. Everyone knew that the GH3 would be 'bigger and better", but the point was, you could already do pretty much anything you wanted with the GH2, so the GH3 would be icing on the cake. Now here's the GH3 and it'll be exactly the same thing. Hmm. Maybe I should revive that thread :)

Selling a new model camera every 2 years makes sense for Panasonic, but I'm not sure it makes as much sense to buyers. And Panny releases cameras at a much faster pace than a company like Canon. When you look at Canon's upgrade cycle by product line, it's typically 3 - 4.5 years for a new camera.

So, going from a G2 to a GH3 I get. And I even understand why people are itching to go from a GH2 to a GH3. I get it. Really. I was itching for it too! But then I realized that the GH3 hasn't actually made the GH2 any less fantastic, and won't really change what can be delivered to clients. A new lens? That could make a big difference.

I've just decided that it's better for me to save the money. Maybe I'll invest it an advanced course on After Effects - now that probably would change what I can deliver to clients!

Anyway, to each their own. :beer:

This is true. It's why I haven't jumped at it to find a store with one like I was with the GH2. I think it's more about making the job easier than a better end product. Yes, it will look a little bit better, but if it's on Youtube compression, it's not going to matter. But the live wifi view will make things easier for me. Fixing up a background for an interview as a one man band will be cut drastically. Doing an interview by myself with no one to sit for the interviewee to have eyeline match with means I have to sit there. And you can't always frame them on the right where you can sit to the left of the camera. So I can keep reviewing footage while sitting there and keeping eyeline match.

And the headphone and mic input jacks will help. Though I did already have a system down for that with my H4n with that special Sescom cable. And the better codec will make for an easier workflow.

But yeah, $1300 could go a long way on one or two, maybe even three, nice lenses. So you definitely have a point.

To me, these are really the best selling points for the GH3 that I've heard. I'll typically use a field monitor and turn it around while lighting, and keep it on the floor while I'm interviewing, but having the shot right there in my hand would be a genuine benefit!

I'm beginning to get work that actually must adhere to broadcast standards. The GH2's 24mbps AVCHD technically doesn't meet the specs of some clients I'm beginning to shoot for. The GH3's 50mbps and 72mbps MOV modes do.
The GH3 has Timecode. This will allow it to easily be used in a multicam environment with other high-end cameras. This is important to me.
Better DR.
Better colorimetry.
Better still images.
Better performance at higher ISOs.
Battery grip for long shoots.
Weather sealed.
Intervalometer.
HDR mode.
More flexibility in setting Contrast, Sharpness, Saturation and NR.

I'm not ditching my GH2, but the advantages of the GH3 are worth the investment to me. I can pay it off in about 3 jobs.At first I was skeptical because of moire/aliasing issues and because the early footage didn't blow my mind. But now that the camera is out in the world, I'm beginning to see footage that convinces me that I can get stuff that looks as sexy as what I've gotten with the GH2, and with less artifacts and a tad more detail in highlights. And all that without having to spend at least $3,000 for a Blackmagic camera and slip into the giant files, screaming fast computer requirements, and commitment of a RAW workflow.

I think it would be interesting to see how many units were shipped to America, and a units figure on how many GH3's were sold. It has to be a pretty huge number if companies can't even keep up with pre orders.

Henry's in Canada have stock again. They will ship outside of Canada and warranties with Panasonic Canada can be done through them.

Just got finished with all my Christmas shoots, so I think I'll just hold on to my NewEgg pre-order if only for the 12 months no payments/interest.
