What is your dream car?

Chip:

That clip is one of my favorites. Top Gear has done 3-4 "films" featuring the Veyron. I am so not a car guy but I am a huge Top Gear fan. I watched the one today with them trying to drift and road race the lorries. Hilarious! One of their best wacky challenges.

Too bad Top Gear America will never happen. BBC could care less what car manufacturers think because they don't have to sell them commercial space. Over here, the ill-fated pilot that nobody has seen proved that no U.S. network has the balls or the capacity to turn down sponsorship from car manufacturers. That's okay, the U.K. version is loads more entertaining that any American version would ever be, there is just this great sarcastic irelevant wit about it.

(It must have been chilly that day. If that woman grazed the car she could leave a scratch!)

Nice taste! I'm related to Bill Mitchell, who pioneered the split-window Vette and Mako (his daily driver) among others. No Vettes in the family, but plenty of Corvairs on-loan to the museum.

I would like to have a '63 for that reason. Though that doucher Zora pretty much made a mess of the whole thing. "Engineers never sold a goddamn thing". I also wear my pants exactly like that, by the way.

Ohhhhh man.... If my dad herd you say that, he paid Zora $5k to sign 'each' one of his old vettes valve covers.

Anyway I could send you up some valve covers for a 327 split window to have him autograph?

Shelby got up to $50k to autograph the dash of some of the rarest Cobras. He made more money on his signature (in 5 seconds) than he made building the cars.

I'm only kidding about Zora - he was a fantastic engineer. But the fight over sightlines with Uncle Bill was taken to extremes and, basically, Zora should have stayed in his little engineer hole. Still, both contributed in their way to a series of fantastic, iconic cars.

:)

So Erik, my new buddy :) Are you going to see uncle Bill over the holidays? he he he

here's the one...

Your points went up in my book. In 1990 I bought a red 67 convertible with a his and hers shifter, numbers matching, rust free car, all original sheet metal. Spent $5k on just a few parts before I started a rotisary resto, was reading GTO ads in Hemmings, saw one for a stolen GTO, just checked the VIN on my car and it was the stolen one. Car was bought new from NY at tat time, it was a non title state so all it had was a pink slip the owner left in the glove box.

I called the police, returned the car, the owner lives in Colorado and to this day we are still friends. I did lose the money I paid for the car and the $5k, glad it was before the rotisary resto, that would have sucked.... To this day I have never 'legaly' had one but maybe in the future :)

He passed years ago, but his daughter is my aunt. She's got a bunch of Corvairs and other cool stuff that is all in the GM archives - 63 Buick Riviera and all that jazz.

Nice, my dad has countless old vettes he has restored over the years, I started buying 'my' generation muscle cars while they were still cheap and restoring them when I have time, started when I was 16. I live in Kansas City so winter projects are a must here to keep you sane.

wow Chip....that's quite a story man! unreal...good that you guys are friends. I had a 69 convertible in Cardinal Red, not quite show quality but a solid 2. had it from 1999 to 2002...wasn't making enough money at the time to maintain it properly, so i let it go. would really love to have a 67 though.

Wouldn't mind having one of these either....

The guy in Colorado (owner of the GTO) is a great guy, I made sure he got his resto dream car back so yea, we are on good terms, he use to stay with me when he came to KC for car shows. It was the guy that I bought it from that stole it from him, I didn't steal it.

Yea, for a while I was priced out of the market (last 4 years), Barret Jackson had every numbers matching original 67 GTO owner on cloud 9 from insane prices. Prices have come down but they are still pretty high for a numbers matching 67 conv. Most have been restored so finding an unrestored 67 conv GTO is getting pretty hard, it's almost cheaper to find one with a bad resto and re do it the right way.

There are still a few in farmers barns you hear stories about. I found one barn last year by accident tornado chasing, it was hit by a tornado in BFE, the whole side was torn off, 80+ old cars in it (no 67 GTO, I looked :) lots of old Mustangs, no Shelby GT500's, also looked:)), it was a wealthy old farmers collection. I'd post a pic but that hard drive isn't here right now, it's a sight to see, I will in the future.

I'll probably sell my cars when I'm to old to maintain them (might be easier for me just to die owning them and have relatives sell them so I never have to see that day) or have a kid and leave them to him but for the most part they are my babies and will never be sold.

I knew what to look for when I started (in 1986) from restoring old vettes / other classic cars with my dad growing up. Before I come off the wrong way you gotta remember when I started this I bought 3 numbers matching 1969 Camero Z28 DZ 302's for $3,500 (total for all three in 1988 :) Still have them so no, I'm not one of these rich collectors you see at Barret Jackson. Now I could never afford to do this with these crazy prices. I love seeing people butcher their muscle cars, it makes mine more rare and worth more $.
