What do you drive?

Tom's got more vision than I do. Looks like fun.

Looking great! Congrats!

We're really happy to finally have it. I know you guys can buy cars like this any day of the week, but the arrival of this model is a really big deal here in the States. It's the first 50-state TDI. We're on the first tank, but VW reports up to 47mpg in their dealer/demo sedans.

We were getting 60mpg in the Opel we rented in France last summer - fully loaded with three kids, the nanny and a trunk full of baggage.

I apologise in advance as I am a total petrol head...

I drive an Aston Martin DB7 Vantage GT. Manual. 6 Litre V12.

0-60mph in 4.6 seconds. Top speed 189mph, although I've only ever had it up to 164mph.

8 miles to the gallon on a bad day and 20-22 miles to gallon on a good day.

Totally impractical but hey this life isn't a rehearsal. It puts a grin on my face every time I press the engine start button. I can shoe horn into the trunk:

2x Full Portabrace Cargo bags (size 2)
1x Vinten Vision 100 Tripod Head and Legs
1x Kino Flo Diva
3x Dedo Lights with stands and dimmers
1x Power Extension drum
1x 4ft lastolite reflector

and still have enough space for a weekend sleep over bag.

It does have 4 seats but unless you have orange skin, green hair, wear a white boiler suit and work in a chocolate factory forget about sitting in the two rear seats.

Here's a picture of it:

^ Nice. :)

Tom, we have talked before about how we are in the same boat. Trying to get my T/A in the garage until I can take it down to get smogged and blasted. I think it just ran out of gas, at least, I hope that's all it is. We will see. Until then, we picked up a smaller car a few weeks ago for when we don't need the hauling capacity of the SUV.

(not actual picture, I am too lazy to walk into the front yard right now to get one though)

Gets great MPG. I filled it up and went to school and back everyday and to the city and back once. Crazy.

Forgot to mention.

You guys state side think your having it bad with fuel prices. Here in the UK we are paying £1.19 (GBP) per LITRE...yes LITRE.

Quick maths make that out to be over $8 (US) a Gallon.

I think you may be paying around $3.5 (US) at this moment in time. Correct me if I'm wrong.

2001 Honda Civic.
You'd be shocked the amount of gear you can fit in one of these things.

2000 Honda Civic COUPE!!!!
I don't know if you'd be amazed or not at what I can haul. My trunk, back seat, and often passenger seat are filled when I'm hauling everything. But hey, when it's full of crap, I still get between 27 and 32 MPG. Booyah.

Yeah, kind of in the same boat... Both of ours need work.

The nice thing about my '67 is I don't have to worry about emissions.

It ran out of gas? Is your gas gauge working? Believe it or not, that's the first thing we would check when I was working as an auto mechanic years ago. More than one person had their car towed in because it wouldn't start. Turns out, the gas tank was empty... :Drogar-Dum(DBG):

Speaking of when I was a mechanic, I got a set of tires put on the 67 on Friday. I really wanted to grab the wheels myself and mount the new tires on and balance them. When you don't work on cars every day, it's actually fun to do stuff with them...

The gage was not working originally then I thought it might be. I was taking it to town to get smogged and it started losing power. It felt like it was running out of gas so I turned around and was almost home but couldn't make it up my street. Towed it with a friend's truck to the house and have yet to toss more gas in the tank. We are going to do it soon so we can get it taken care of and garaged until we can afford to do more with it. Oh, how I wish I could sell a script for a lot of money. The first thing I would do would be to fix her up completely.

I drive an )% chevy aveo, I show up on sets with it packed to the gills, and people are shocked at how much gear i'm able to pack into it, only two ways to pack it and get everything in, loven on Satarns vue hibrid suv.

2004 Nissan Quest. Previously had a Toyota Matrix that up and died one day and in an impulse move I bought the minivan. Best thing ever. 4 big leather captains seats with craploads of room in the back with the 3rd row bench folded down. We've got 5 dogs - 3 get dropped off at daycare on my way to work everyday. Its so great to have them caged in the back and still have 4 seats for stuff and people, none of which gets bothered by the dogs. Have had a huge sectional couch in it before without a problem, a 15kw generator that I thought we'd never get home, and loads and loads of production gear too. and the sliding doors and rear liftgate are auomatic. Really nice when your hands are full. And its a nice smooth ride for getting around town. Mileage isnt terrible at 20-22mpg either. I dont think I'll ever not have a minivan...

I did get the chance to drive Mark Johnson's Prius while in CA last week though. THats a pretty slick car. Kinda creepy when it just "boots up" and is ready to go. If I didnt have the 5 dogs I'd definitely get one when they become more available.

I've got an Element... it fits all this and more, with driver and passenger...

The best part is, the big cart rolls right into the element intact. The little one has to be taken apart and packed around the big one.

I'm looking into buying a car right now. It has to be a Chevy, don't question ;)

I'm either thinking about the Cobalt SS Turbo or the HHR

The Cobalt Pros:

Super fast! 260 horses! Small, fast, good MPG, and Blast to drive.

Cons:
2-door, small coupe, manual transmission in LA traffic.

HHR:
Pro's
peppy for being a small SUV/Car type thing
Fits A TON of stuff inside.

Cons
Kinda ugly, no?

What do you think? Any suggestions?

I'd go for the HHR. Plenty of space but still manageable to drive. The cobalt looks fun but I would hate to have it as my only car. Practicality wins over fun any day in my book. 260 horses in that little thing though? damn. my minivan has 265 and has some decent power... I may have to rent a cobalt sometime...

Thanks Jeff, you've said what deep inside I don't want to believe.

I think the HHR is going to win due to it's ability to carry more gear.

The 260hp Cobalt is the SS Turbo version. So fun to drive!! 0-60 in 5.7 seconds... not bad for a car around $20k

2007 Honda Ridgeline for hauling gear....1969 Plymouth Road Runner for hauling ass!....and a 1994 Mazda Miata just for fun.

Audi A3.
fits a decent amount in the hatchback -- when seats fold down, i got plenty of room. i used to hate 4-dr cars, but now i don't ever want a 2 dr again. had a Golf before and it was fine (actually pretty roomy for being so small), but reaching in the back seats with only 2 doors got old.
love my A3 -- and it's quick.

It might just be me and my tastes but are all modern american cars designed by Stevie Wonder and Homer Simpson?

Now the 68 Mustang GT Fastback, that was design.

2001 rusted out, dented, POS Pontiac Sunfire. 200 000km, standard. It get's the job done... For now.

I would like to get me a Volkswagen Jetta in time.
