What do you drive?

I've had a 2002 Durango for 5 years now. It's great for hauling all of my gear and crew, but the 15 mpg is getting to me. I'm thinking about making a change.

So, I'm just wondering what kinds of vehicles y'all drive that you use to haul all of your gear...big enough that you don't have light stands poking you in the ear.

FWIW, the biggest piece of gear I've got is a 4' 4-bank Kino. Anybody drive a Honda Element?

A hard bargain.

Women nuts.

Screws.

NOT... 55.

Points home.

A Chevy Silverado... and yeah, the mileage is killing me.

I have an element. the mileage is not as good as it should be. I think mine averages about 20? I think I get just about exactly 300 mi per 15 gal tank...but then again, I drive over the speed limit by about 20MPG. Want to get one of those thingies that tells me in real time what the mileage is...

Otherwise, I love that little thing.

I drive the Element and LOVE IT! Barry Green is also an Element owner. The rear seats fold up along the walls to give a great amount of open cargo space in the back, and if you need additional width, the seats can be completely removed, easily. The clamshell rear opening makes it convenient to get stuff in and out and the no post side doors give easy access from the sides. I get about 24MPG average (haven't taken the time to differentiate between city/highway). There is also a way, if you get the manual transmission, to add an additional gear for better performance/gas mileage.

I am 6'1", so head room is always an issue for me in cars, but driving the Element I have about 6" clearance above my head. And with the additional clearance they have raised the rear seats so that instead of looking at the back of the front passengers heads you look over them.

I have used it on 3 different shoots and it has been fantastic every time. Carrying all my lights, ladders, tripod, and sundry gear. On my first shoot I only folded one rear set up, and loaded all my gear (including a pneumatic tire cart and 2x4 lumber for a make shift dolly) while still allowing room to carry my 1st AD and the actress to the location.

I hate you guys. I love the element. While it's not the best looking SUV I think it's probably nearly the perfect production vehicle... one of the LA crew got one while I was out there... every cool film dude has one.

yeah, the space can't be beat, and I agree with Larry, the headroom for big dudes is awesome.

Great camping car too. And Great roadtrip car. I've done texas, Chicago, Ohio, and two shuttle launch trips to Florida in it.

02 Ford Focus SE - averages 30-32 MPG and can get 36 on the highway. And it's only got 50k miles on it! :) Definitely holding on to it until i can afford a hybrid.

Everything folds down, so 8 ft 2x4's or 10 ft PVC pipe for dollies is no problem. Don't know if your kino would fit. I used to have a 3'x3' dolly that fit in the trunk.

I sold my giant Pathfinder when I realized giant beasts like that are killing all of us. We bought a Nissan Versa for my wife and I opted out of replacing my car. I'm trying to do my part but it's hard when jerks keep buying this gas guzziling behemoths without one thought of its impact. Anyway, it's a sore subject for me when I'm running late to a meeting and either hopping a bus or taking a cab as a sacrifice, then being stuck in traffic behind 50 SUV's with one driver each. Grrrr.

MY car is basically a luxury now, never driven in the city, except on weekends to run to home depot or whatever, and road trips. Otherwise, it sits parked.

I'm going to go green on you... I've been driving the 2004 Toyota Prius since the fall of 2003. It almost seems like we're getting better mileage numbers now than we did then. The best I've gotten on road trips was 56mpg, and average around town is about 45-48. With the back seats down, it fits all my gear, or even a full-sized Christmas tree!

Hmmm...my buddy has an 02 Civic Si...it's a hatchback, and that thing was actually pretty cavernous for as little as that car was.

Hmmm...

I have a 2002 Lexus IS300. The room for gear is okay. I just have to make sure that I clear out my trunk before I go on a shoot.

I had an 01 civic and it was great. Had to basically drive it off a cliff to kill it. And Luis is right, it's like a clown car. You can fit an astounding amount of stuff in it.

The prius does look super roomy as well.

Clown car?
You callin' me a clown?
Am I here to amuse you?

(any excuse to reference Good Fellas)

jeep compass. the wrangler was killing me with zero space and 15 miles to the gallon.

now i get more than twice the mileage, and waaaaaaay more room for gear.
