Wedding Lenses?

Okay so I am about to start shooting weddings to make some extra money with my 7D and I was curious your opinions on lense choices. Im looking at something like a 28-70mm Tamron zoom 2.8 or just going will all old nikon primes. Any suggestions would be appreciated....I am a college student real tight on money so keep that in mind. I already have the kit lense and a 50mm 1.8 canon.

If you can get a Sigma 20, 24 or 28 that's probably the lens you'll use the most at a wedding. They're all 1.8's and while not the best, should be pretty nice for a wedding.

Make sure you grab ND and Polarizer, no matter which lens you get. The importance of both is grossly understated.

Thanks kholi. So are you suggesting that the wider the lense the better fo weddings also? I think thos sigmas will run a little more than I'm wanting to spend too...that's why I was looking at the zoom

I've got a ton of old m42 lenses and for weddings, my main goto lens is the 50mm and 35mm but this is with an adapter setup. Will soon be getting a 7d as the b camera and will use the same lenses. I've got a wedding showreel here http://www.vimeo.com/7813030

You are shooting a live event

Surely a zoom or two bodies with primes is pretty much required

Id look for something in the 16-50 region

and dont zoom in shot !

It's a live event that will be heavily edited. It's not a concert that you have to capture from beginning to end. But for the ceremony, a zoom or even better, a second camera is pretty much required.
weddings are pretty formulaic, you know the important bits to capture and the inbetween bits that don't require that much attention. Unless you are doing a cultural wedding with many weird traditions, in that case you'd know what is going on anyway because of the pre-wedding meeting you have with the couple. It's also handy to have a checklist of the important events so you can be ready and tick them off as the day progresses.

I like a zoom so I can grab a cutaway or different angle of a very similar moment

eg B+G walk to car - crowd clapping

or

B+G in car with a 50, change position and angle move to a wide, film car deaprt

Of course a second operator kind of cures this

From what I've heard from wedding videographers (and my buddy is on the EventDV top 25 list), the 70-200 2.8L IS lens is the favorite. That and a f1.2 or f1.4 for low light.

i've shot a few weddings so far with my 7d. i tended to stay with either 16-35 or 70-200. put a 1.4x on the 70-200 for ceremony to get in a little tighter.

i know you're on a budget, but lensrentals.com is your friend!

thanks guys ill take this all into consideration. Im doing a free wedding this weekand and just taking what I have. Ill make a good judgment after that so I really know what to expect.
