Web Hosting

Where do you guys host your web pages from? Do you have any tips for a novice? And ow can you give your page that "professional" look to it?

I host from Doteasy. You can start out with a free account with limited bandwidth, 1gb a month, 100MB of storage. Not bad for nothing, although you still have to register your domain for 25 bucks. I paid 100 for a year which gave me all the bells and whistles, 20gb of storage and unlimited bandwidth. I have no complaints.

Bluehost is the best there is (price and service). Sign-up using the following link and the DVXuser Official Charity will get $65 for FREE.

As far as getting a "professional" look for your site, ...Well, just like making videos look professional - it'll take time and hard work. ...Or it'll take lots of money to pay professionals. lol

Good luck!

I was hosting with 1and1, but just this past week switched to HostMonster (www.hostmonster.com).

If you prepay for 2 years it's $4.95/mo right now and you get the following:

600 GB hosting space
Host unlimited domains
Unlimited pop/imap email
ssh access
6,000 GB bandwidth
SSL, FTP, Stats
CGI, Ruby (ROR), Perl, PHP, MySql

Here is their full list of features: http://www.hostmonster.com/hosting-features.htm

ANd many of the other features that make a host great. I was recommended to them by Jason Ramsey who has contacted their support line a couple times with questions and found their support to be EXCELLENT.

Additionally, this is what really sold them to me ... when I was pushing the All Hallows Fest entries out to the various mirrors I consistently found pushing the films to Jason's site to take a 1/3 of the time it took to push the same films to any of the other sites hosted at other companies.

Bluehost and hostmonster are owned by the same company. hostmonster has lower rates though and pretty much the same packages as bluehost.

Ditto, what Larry said. Hostmonster is top notch. when I started with them a year ago they were like 1tb/monthly bandwidth, and 100 gigs storage. then they went up to 3tb and 300 gig. Now they are 6tb and 600gig and running on octo-cores.

They rock, and I can't stress it enough. Fast, feature rich, and excellent, tip-top notch 24/7 phone support.

I don't like dreamhost. we were hosting banners from a server hosted by them for a while, and it just became a headache. slow, unreliable, and terrible tech support.

Jason

The features webhosts advertise don't really mean anything. It's just fluff to try and beat the Joneses. Except for the Add-on domains - which can save you a lot of money if you have multiple domains.

With shared hosting they place thousands of websites on a single server and then limit the amount of CPU usage for each site so that your site never takes away too much CPU resources from the other sites. If your site gets popular and uses a lot of bandwidth (1tb/mo or more) then that means the CPU would be running pretty hot 24/7 and occasionally spike passed your limit and they would shut your site down IMMEDIATELY, then try to sell you a dedicated server package. So, technically, it's impossible for any shared hosting site to use 6tb of transfer/mo. It just won't happen. But the promise sure helps sell hosting plans. lol

So don't make your decision based on which webhost offers the most bells and whistles (even though it is the holidays and bells are in right now). If your site gets more than 10,000 visitors per day or needs more than 500gb/mo transfer then you really need a dedicated server.

Since you're just starting out, you'll be fine with just a modest hosting plan with a webhost that has great service. After you build up an audience for your site, then look into upgrading. Good luck.

Free hosting at http://www.jshosts.com/ for me, you actually have to pay.. but yeah. Nice little service for me i guess. Also got my domain for free.. for a year. So i'm sorted I guess until late October 08. I'll upgrade my register and hosting closer to the time perhaps. Just taking it as it comes.

That's where I host. I have 4+ domains hosted on the one account right now.

For my cheaper plans I used to use pennguinhost, commonacre, pair...

but now the monthly bill is over a grand the story is a bit different.... however we're going through www.caro.net, thier 247 customer support is unsurpassed.

Funny.. I am with Dreamhost and have had nothing but good things to say about them.. they have decent tech support from my dealings with them.

I just signed up with www.hostmonster.com and transferred my domain over from Go Daddy and wow, was I ever pleased with that decision. The tech support is GREAT over at hostmonster! They helped me set everything up, from the problems I was encountering with my emails due to the switch and getting my hosting questions all answered promptly and effectively.

I signed up for 2 years hosting, because of this thread actually and they're covering the renewal costs of my domain, which is just an added bonus.

Highly recommended,

Kegan

EDIT: edited to add that even though I may sound like a walking, talking ad - I never even heard of hostmonster until I read this thread.
