Web Hosting

Question on hosting...So I have siteground wich advertised 750gb web space but come to find out you can olly have 5gbs dedicated to videos...ha that doesn't work for me. So what is bluehost/hostmonsters max web space for videos?

Thanks guys I'm thinking about transfering my website.

I checked around the Bluehost site and forum and didn't find any limits for videos. Just make sure you own the copyrights to the materials people will be downloading. That's typically the rule for any webhost.

Good luck!

So you think the 600gb hostinng space doen't have a video limit? Thus, it doens't break it down to like 10gb video..5gb photo...etc....

If not I will switch this week no doubt. How hard is it to switch over a domain name and site?

Thanks PK

I don't think so. Bluehost and Hostmonster are owned by the same company. I've never encountered anything of that sort on Hostmonster.

Switching over isn't too bad. I did it from Go-Daddy to Hostmonster and Hostmonster's customer service was really patient and helpful. Didn't take too long to get my stuff switched over and up and running.

Thanks for the replys guys. So Jason do you have any idea what the video/photo limit of bluehost/host monster is?

Thanks

Josh

I don't think there is a specific limit, unless I am misunderstanding you. I've got 4 dvxfests, my own clips, and clips that I host for people here on dvxuser on my hostmonster account, and haven't had any problem.

It's just a total size, as far as I know, not a size limit for each type of content.

But, if you want to be sure, just call 'em up. They'll tell you for sure. One of the things I love best about hostmonster is their support. I don't use it much, but when I have a question, I just call 'em. I've never spent more than two minutes on hold, and it's usually right away that they pick up.

Awesome thanks!

triplej96 - As already mentioned, Hostmonster and Bluehost are the same company. I sent you a PM. Please check your messages. :)

I'll have to look into Hostmonster. My host package runs out on me in June. I put a webpage up and vowed to keep at it. But I didn't. And it just sat online doing nothing. But now I want to get it set to have my reel online and such.

Guys, one thing i have noticed you all go on about is companies offering 600gb storage and 6 TB transfer.

Think about the logisitics of this. Now a server is just a computer, most of the time has less storage than a normal computer.

Most people who go with plans such as 600gb, usually suffer from the annoyance of their sites being down all the time or there sites being extremely slow.

I would put a $100 bucks on that you could not use that full 600gb storage.

At the end of the day you either go with stupid storage, low reliablity host or low storage, high reliability host.

Sorry if i seem very hostile about these types of hosts. I went with one before and it made me end up running my own fleet of servers and hosting services.

Cheers,
Nathaniel

I dont belive this is true, hostgator is who you are refering too about the 6TB and 600GB, and i transfered more than 40 GB to that server in A DAY and had no problems with them, and they offer a 99.9% uptime garentee... hosted from theplanet

I've pushed a 1and1 shared hosting account almost all the way up to it's 250GB limit with no hit on performance.

How you ask? I left a group of webcams uploading a new pic every 10 seconds for a couple of weeks. The ISP wasn't happy.

Individual servers may not have that mcuh storage space on them [not their job, they just process and shuffle the data], but a good quality data-center with a decent NAS is a very powerfull thing.

Hi, if my knowledge leads me correct. Host gator owns there own datacentre. But yes, 40GB should be ok.

One thing people will run into is the AUP (Acceptable Usage Policy)

If someone is really going to use 600gb of storage the chance are that there site is going to be popular. Popular = higher server loads. I have seen companies terminating accounts simply because they have to many visitors or there sites are using to much system resources.

I Have been looking at a possible NAS or DAS options for a site im lauching soon and i no its very costly and i dont think many hosts use it because when you are hosting multiple sites, you are going to have alot of latency in the network.

Nathaniel

I agree with Nathaniel. Read my previous post in this topic (below).

Shared hosting is NOT for popular sites (Ex: DVXuser doesn't use it.) If you're using 5tb of transfer/mo then you're getting A LOT of traffic and your web host will shut you down for hogging your server resources (which you share with a thousand other websites). They know 99.9% of their customers will never need that much webspace/bandwidth so they can say whatever they want (same with Gmail and Hotmail).

The features webhosts advertise don't really mean anything. It's just fluff to try and beat the Joneses. Except for the Add-on domains - which can save you a lot of money if you have multiple domains.

With shared hosting they place thousands of websites on a single server and then limit the amount of CPU usage for each site so that your site never takes away too much CPU resources from the other sites. If your site gets popular and uses a lot of bandwidth (1tb/mo or more) then that means the CPU would be running pretty hot 24/7 and occasionally spike passed your limit and they would shut your site down IMMEDIATELY, then try to sell you a dedicated server package. So, technically, it's impossible for any shared hosting site to use 6tb of transfer/mo. It just won't happen. But the promise sure helps sell hosting plans. lol

http://ezinearticles.com/?Shared-vs-Dedicated-Hosting&id=765002

So don't make your decision based on which webhost offers the most bells and whistles (even though it is the holidays and bells are in right now). If your site gets more than 10,000 visitors per day or needs more than 500gb/mo transfer then you really need a dedicated server.

Since you're just starting out, you'll be fine with just a modest hosting plan with a webhost that has great service. After you build up an audience for your site, then look into upgrading. Good luck.
