WarFEST Official Rules (NOW POSTED)

I've been collecting a number of definitions/types of war over the last few days waiting for the rules. Given no-one will make the same film even given the same brief I figured I'd share and put the ideas up for debate.

Class war - probably doesn't make the cut now the rules are up
Gender war - ditto
World war - this one's obvious, I, II or III
Nationalistic War - expect there'll be at least one of these
Cold war - a war of arms build-up, posturing and standoff - possibly an espionage war
Espionage War - a war over information, cloak and dagger
Insurgency - rebellion against an authority or institution whose legitimacy is in question
Proxy War - war fought through third-parties in lieu of open warfare between belligerents (spanish civil war, vietnam, bay of pigs)
Corporate War - application of a warfare mindset to the business arena (show me the ceo who hasn't read sun tzu)
Religious War - ideological war instigated or co-opted by religious interest at an organised or grassroots level
Tribal War - territorial war between opposing tribes due to pressures of population, resources or ideologies
Gang War - territorial war between opposing criminal fraternities
Concept War - a war on a concept - war on cancer, war on drugs, war on terror etc
Apostrophe War - its' serious stu'ff!

Some types of War:

Hegemonic War - objective of attaining control of the entire world order - Nazis, Illuminati, religious fundamentalists
Total War - mobilisation of entire society against a second entire society with intent to subjugate and occupy by any means
Limited War - waged in order to gain a specific objective without escalating to total war, or may be ongoing sporadic conflict
Civil War - an internal conflict between factions within a society for control of that society or some territory within it
Guerilla War - carried out by irregular forces (often deep within enemy territory) without front lines

Now, that I will have some time to think about it, I will try to clarify the whole "war" theme better this weekend. Not trying to limit you guys too much. Just want to see you embrace the theme fully in your own way, not try to skirt it, or half-ass the theme is all :)

july 14th!? man, i almost have time for a second project all together! probably wont direct it, but i'll write/produce/dp for sure!

I was also interpreting the "war/conflict" scenario pretty creatively before the full rules were posted. I'd like to avoid doing a full out classic "war battle" if that can be avoided, but I'll work within whatever rules are set!

fohdeesha... can you pm (or post here) what you were thinking of?

I want to articulate the rules better, but admittedly, I did not spend much time on them with all the nab stuff going on this week.

Well, when you originally said war/conflict, I was thinking of any kind of major conflict or competition between two parties. Perhaps between two corporations, stealing technology from one or the other, or something not quite as cheesy, but you get the idea. I guess I was just thinking of any sort of major conflict or battle between two parties, whether the battle is mental or physical. This is my first dvxfest though so I'm happy working with whatever rules you lay down!

yes. that sounds like it could be fine. it doesn't have to be a war for blood, or a fight to the death. corporate war could be a possibility for sure.

I do agree that the current wording of the theme definition may come across as a bit restrictive. one good example (that I could find an acceptable use of theme) is war as a backdrop... as long as it's not a passive one. But, I can see how the current definition wouldn't seem to include that as a possibility.

I just wanted to let you all know that I am working on getting a more clear definition of the theme up.

In the meantime, get your creative juices flowing, and if you have an idea that you are not sure fits the fest, please feel free to pm me.

so I have three films I want to work on in this fest, however I want all of them to be votable.
One I am directing for sure, the other Bill Christensen is… but the third film I still want people to be able to vote on it, but we are both directing it. Is it possible if we have three directing credits, it can be considered it's own entry instead of exhibition only?

Damn, would love to do this, but it's overlapping with another short that I'm already in preproduction for. Looking forward to seeing all the entries. Hopefully I'll be able to do the next one.
