Vfx Challenge 2 - Urban Destruction

Hey Raptor, we're all in the same boat methinks. I'm encouraging everybody to upload even if their clips aren't "upload worthy" as you put it. There was lots to learn from all the entries last time and sometimes the unfinished stuff is actually the best tool in that regard.

Also, regarding your statement that "outside of the VFX guys" nobody will recognize yours as an effect, that's probably the highest compliment you can get paid. Making VFX that look like effects is pretty easy. Making them look natural and subtle is hard.

I don't think my entry will be finished in time but I'll throw up whatever I have when Sunday gets here.

I can say that its been marvelous, though, no matter what because I've gotten to learn some stuff that otherwise who knows when I'd have gotten to it.

Yeah, I am quite excited! Right now I have to shovel all my data from my old to the new notebook.

Woo Hoo. .... man, that's a smoking box Simon. Congrats. Now go hole up in a Starbucks somewhere and complete an entry!!

do we have to use stuff from the toolbox? or could I go get my own footage to use?

The rules aren't clear on this point but I had originally posted that people could shoot their own plates and I want that to be an option. As long as you are doing the VFX work specifically for this project you can use background plates from any source you choose.

The idea is to encourage people to enter and try things, so go ahead and use what you wish!

...that's probably the highest compliment you can get paid...

Normally it would be but this is one of those non effect effects like lining the street with lamp posts then blowing up the street. The explosion would be seen yeah but the lamp posts would slip by.

I'm not using lamp posts but its one of those deals.
I'm sure I can get something uploaded even if it's incomplete.

Whoa, Windows Vista sucks big time :D I will remove that piece of sh*t from my new little baby as soon as possible. Amazing how people can stand it. It's one freaking bug.

At least I've started something for this fest today. First matte painting with a cracked street and some broken windows.

Will be a quite short and simple entry, but at least I hopefully throw something in the ring.

Hey guys great contest, the only issue that I have with it though... the prizes are a little light right now, especially when you have competitions from vfxtalk and cgtalk that are offering software, equipment and hardware... I would prolly do it for the fun of it but a lot of VFX artists might overlook it because of the prize selection, IMHO. I'm just making a comment. I know that this is to get people going and doing VFX stuff... but still...

Dude, don't be an ass.

Haha,

Nice delivery Mark.

Fact of the matter is, I half-assed my last entry to get in in there. I think we all have lives. And when we are talking days of rendering time...two weeks is pretty quick, especially when trying to juggle this with everything else.

I've continually looked to get this increased to three weeks or a month. Since I am not going to submit a crap entry like last time and fail miserably, especially since I work in this industry. In hind sight, it was a terrible mistake. I will again try to get something out, but I think all of us can use that extra week.

I have to agree with Mattykins.
Extending the deadline by a week would be good. Would that be a possiblility?

It's up to Mark. I'de like to see it extended, But that's because I'm struggling and still looking for someone to team up with. So, anyone want to work with me, just let me know.

But, for the sake of Devil's advocate, a deadline is a deadline.
