VaricamLT: Varicam LT, Scarlet-W or something else?

Just a note on recognition ETC of the Varicam. In NYC where a lot of the NETFLIX Shows are shot. The Varicam 35 is on quite a few shows. Master of None which shot season one on the varicam 35 and is up for a few Emmy's is shooting season 2 in Brooklyn Now and they've added a couple of varicam LT bodies to their kit.
I know a few member of the crew on the Marvel shows would be Happy to have those shows switch to a Varicam.
There are also a few AMAZON shows shooting varicam and more coming.
In my opinion right now Netflix and AMAZON are the market leaders. I haven't even mentioned the 2 feature Docs I worked on that are going strait to Netflix (one of the them is the direct reason I bought an LT. Last year we were shooting the Doc, the DP owned a c300 MKii, we were shooting part of the show in Memphis and Panasonic loaned the production a varicam 35 for a week. when we got back to new york, it was the week before the LT was announced. the DP sold his c300 Mkii and promptly bought a varicam LT. I followed suit and bought one as soon as they started shipping)

I just discovered that Panasonic launched a new smaller raw Varicam, the Varicam pure. They seem to become more agressive since the LT, which is a good thing.

What was his problem with Red?

My experience has been that when RED is discussed, most producers have had difficult experiences with the system either through on-set issues or workflow headaches. I'm not dissing RED here, just reporting the feedback I've been given. The exceptions would be producers that happen to own RED cameras, of course!

The Pure looks like an interesting option, and great for present V35 owners since they can purchase the module (not good for those who already own the Codex module though)! Very sleek package. Amazing to think that a RAW recorder is now smaller than the regular setup on the V35!

Raw is not that processor intensive competed to burning a look and compression on the fly - it's also efficient space wise compared to uncompressed 444

Responding more to the historical fact that raw recorders have tended towards bulkier than internal recording.

Im not an expert.. it is just an observation that all making of compressed files is more work than just recording the data.. afaik

Wasn't that because this was the stage where the final writing to the media took place?

In any case, thanks for the answer on Red. I would have thought the dependability and the workflow problems would have been worked out by now. I assume that Panasonic's rep on the set is void of those disclaimers.

PS. With all the Raw options out there - Red Code, Sony X-OCN, now Panasonic Pure, soon Canon C700 via Codex - and the ever decreasing cost of the media and the computing power, do you think Raw is making a serious assault onto the scripted TV front?

But he will not make another Grosse Point.

(Which I really liked, btw ... a show with a future Oscar winner, no less)

What I will make and what I have made are a couple of stupid mistakes. I woke up around 4 a.m. this morning and I can barely keep my eyes open. One of the mistakes was when I tried to install the P2 driver on my PC and the installer refused to do it, and I was like "Why?! Why won't it install?!" and after an hour I realized that I had downloaded the 32-bit version, not the 64-bit. That's how my day has been... Yes, I should go to bed and do all this tomorrow, but that won't happen... :zombie_smiley:

I put my Canon 100 f/2.8 macro lens on the camera and shot a Canon lens rear cap with a cropped sensor at 1920x1080, ISO5000 and lit it with a small LED. The aperture was set to about F10 to reduce the extremly shallow DOF without losing too much sharpness.
I guess the base ISO5000 will come to good use when shooting macro, if one wants to have a less shallow DOF. Of course the cropping can also be done in post if you shoot in 4K.

A bit of excitement over the new gear or, as it's known in the US, a "new car smell".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_car_smell

Probably. :)

About smell, I have to tell you a funny story: I used to work at the biggest music retail company (distributor) in Scandinavia a while back and we were selling Gibson guitars to music stores in Scandinavia. One day I got a call from a shop in northern Sweden and they told me that they had an unusual problem: they had sold a new Gibson guitar and the customer claimed it smelled funny. Apparently it smelled so bad his wife got upset and refused to have it in the house. So the store wanted to return the guitar because of the smell. I talked to our guitar technician and he looked at me surprised and said "It's impossible, it's probaly the wood finish and that smell will disappear after a while. Every new Gibson smells like that because they have that specific wood finish.". I myself was surprised, since I knew very well how new Gibson guitars smelled and thought that they couldn't be that stupid, so I called the store and asked them if it perhaps just was a "new guitar smell" but the guy working there insured me it wasn't. This guitar was very special!

So they sent it back to us. We opened the case, and it smelled like a new Gibson. So we sent it back to them and I said "If your customer doesn't like the smell of a new guitar he should buy a used one. There's nothing wrong with the guitar."

Apparently some people don't like the "new stuff smell". :)

That person should have bought an old Soviet guitar made of Bakelite. It didn't smell much and could easily be used as a dinner tray also. Of course, those Soviet guitars sounded like crap - low quality strings and electronics didn't help the matters - and no self-respecting Soviet musician would be caught dead using one. A Czech made Les Paul knockoff was the ultimate dream because no one could afford the real thing anyway.

Ha! Too funny man. I liked it as well. Some really smart people on that show.

And back to our previously scheduled Varicam LT programming.
