Update red.com "Recommended"

Exactly what I was referring to when I said that it was addressed with some reservation earlier in this thread. Hearing a lot of "try" and "maybe" and "not sure" just makes me a little nervous... with so many post houses sticking to PPC [as so many small plugins and applications haven't gone Universal], I'd really hate to see them [and my badass brand-new system] get left in the dust.

I'm sure it'll be Universal, but I've just asked that specific question 3 or 4 times now and I've never gotten a simple "yes" or "no".
I think Graeme was trying to be as honest as possible. With everything being developed and in a state of constant flux, I can see where he doesn't want to say something that will be flung back at him in the form of: "Well, you said..."

Keep in mind for those Mac users out there, a topic that has come up before is the potential release of FCP Extreme, which will be tied into next generation hardware. Talk of this new system has been floating around the web for some time now. Could be that a system like this is what will be needed for the really high end work. And I'm sure there will be solutions on the PC side that will also come out that will accomodate the 4K workflows. By the time the camera is released, we may see all kinds of new stuff hit the market.

Final Cut Extreme is just pure nonsense. All the rumours about it are just that - totally rumourous and untrue. Come on - they said RED would be $200,000!!!

Graeme

Let me clarify, before this gets taken the wrong way. Final Cut Pro will have a new version, let's drop the "Extreme" from the name. That will then work with next generation hardware, i.e. intel based macs with lots of processing, and perhaps new cards from companies like Kona and Black Magic. In addition, I believe they will release a new Cinema Display capable of 4K res. A system like this should be capable of handling 4K media, pretty smoothly i would guess?

This is what BenB had to say about the $25K FCP package.

there was talk of a high end FCP that would cost $25,000 that would be close to the Avid Nitris...

Ok, ok, one last time, let me put this false rumor to rest once and for all. There will not be any $25k FCP package. In fact, I've recently read several articles that those high end/high price systems are on the way out, being replaced by batteries of desktop systems doing the same thing for less money. Apple told us trainers once that the $25k FCP was definitly a false rumor, there was no place for such a package in the market, period.

What you will see is the desktop NLEs such as FCP and Edius get more and more advanced.

And do expect to see FCP 6.0 at NAB, but not sooner, and this is a rumor Apple refuses to comment on. But Apple has officially said the $25k FCP system is very much a false rumor.

Sorry to get this thing off topic a little (PC users probably looking to break some legs right about now). I guess my point was that systems like FCP and Avid, etc will come out with new versions that are more powerful (for example, Apple buying up Final Touch) and making the 4K workflows more palpable. This will be tied into the hardware running it, new Macs, PCs, capture cards, drive configs, etc.

EDIT : Steve posted before me.

I don't know about Avid making their software more powerful, though. They have to protect their high end suites, like Nitris, and the Media suites ...

Because they needed to add some better CC tools to FCP. The standard CC tools did an okay job, but nothing compared to what Avid's high end could do or something like Color Finesse or Final Touch.

Actually, Avid does need to do some work too. Still lots of workarounds. Both systems could stand to improve with the new formats, etc.

Avids protecton of their highend suites has been a bit of a fiddle, IMHO...

I'll reevaluate purchasing them closer to the release of the camera, but so far FCP seems to be more interested in high end finishing applications on desktops, since they don't have a high end profit finishing/online market to protect. Hopefully, Avid proves me wrong.

BTW - has anyone noticed that RED has taken down the recommended specs link on their website?

Probably because the media and less "involved" forum sites would immediately start screaming about how RED will only support Macs and how it will require a top-of-the-line system with all the trimmings... a system nearly as expensive as the camera itself and lenses that are more expensive.

Fixing up the page based upon feedback from this forum and the confusion the original caused. Thanks.

Instant feedback. Gotta love it :)

Although, I think most people here knew you were showing us your set up, and not the only one.

Keep the links, when you repost it, though. It was nice for the lazy peeps...

I'm not at all convinced of that from what I read on the first 3-4 pages of this thread. It looked more like an anti-FCP rant.
