Underwater bag

I don't know about those cheap ones, but I know Ewa-Marine make a similar product which has a decent reputation (when used sensibly). The biggest complaint I've heard with these is that beyond a few feet underwater, the water pressure starts to squeeze the bag which then can trigger the cameras buttons.

These types of products are really designed for surface use - so you can take it on a boat, get splashed, maybe even drop it over the side accidentally and still have it survive. They are not really designed for proper 'underwater' use ie scuba diving, so it's suitability would be dependant on the type of shot you need.

In any case, when I'm using a housing in certain conditions, I will do a thourough test swim with the empty housing (or with weights or something inside) and give it a good workout - splash it, shake it, swim deeper than I'll need to, let it get smashed by a wave, bounce it against the boat/sea floor etc, just to make sure it will hold up.

If you're willing to take the risk then I'm sure this will suffice for a single shot.

Thanks. I need one shot of a woman swimming from underneith her...ala Jaws...maybe down 7 feet or so

Lol, I think the real question at this stage is - DO you have an accidental coverage warranty?

And as far as the PVC not being reliable, the only thing I can think of is that PVC is used for water under pressure all the time. Looking at that bag, i just cant tell where/how it seals.

IF you end up getting it and it works well though, please post back here as I would be interested in it.

Lol, yeah the fold doesn't look terribly airtight...but I must assume it somehow seals. It's not the PVC I mistrust, it's my water seal I'm concerned about

7 feet is more than I would trust a bag. Splashes and quick dips around 1 feet, yeah, it most likely would be fine. Pressure goes up fast as you go down. PVC pipe only holds pressure normally when its glued/wielded together. The DYI PVC looks cool, but I think the form factor of the DSLR is not helping you here. You'll need some big pipe to make it work. I have an old splash housing made by Sony for HandyCams. But I can't get my T2i to fit in it. It's just too wide.

Well I ordered it and we shall see. I will be the guinea pig and possibly my stupidity will be a lesson, but perhaps not.

There's always the dicapac at about $100. I've had it down about four feet in the pool and it looks great.

I bought a similar, smaller underwater bag to use with my Canon Ixus 100IS. It hasn't arrived yet but as I understand it, there are three zip-locks. After I placed the order, I added the camera to my insurance policy :).

Yesterday, I was reading an article by Galen Rowell and he mentioned running many miles and swimming in order to arrive at a location for a shot he had wanted. How did he protect his camera and lens in the water? Three zip-lock bags for each.

Don't test it with a cheaper camera first, put something in there that it doesn't matter if it gets wet, T-shirt, etc.

I don't know about it going underwater but it'd make an excellent housing so you can film in the rain/snow. I'm gonna buy one. XD

Well i'm still waiting for mine to arrive, i have a tracking number & the seller responds quickly & is helpful, so i'm not worried. I shall be testing it thoroughly before putting my 550D in it! lol
