Loving this thread (as you can tell). So we know you shot with Red which begs the question: Hard drive space. How are you managing master footage, edited footage, and vfx composited footage. RAIDs? Backups? How are you sending it off to the FX team? Upload? (Each clip at master quality has to be very large tho) Thumb drives in the mail?
Very curious.
Sorry this response took so long, but here's the short of it:
About 8 terrabytes of Data, which includes Audio, some BTS stuff, etc. We shot to 320gb RED DRIVES the entire time, at least two on set each day. Sometimes we ran too far over the halfway mark, which means offloading the data is risky.
Used Seagate GoFlex drives @ 2TB capacities that cost about 150ish a piece. We also bought Firewire 800 Docks for them, an extra 40.00 expense before, but now 20.00 which is dirt cheap.
VFX guys overseas are working on models(texturing, skinning, etc), rigging, animation for all CGi assets so there's nothing to ship there. I imagine when it's all said and done it'll be FTP or a hard-drive expedited. For Compositing and rotoscoping, that's all here in LA being done by my friends and they're close by, so I bought two 1TB drives to switch off as I export DPX sequences in REDCINE -X with adjusted gamma and white balance.
Mostly kicked out 720 offline files with very light color work (mostly just white balance and a soft curve) for editing in FCP. Could have done 1080P, should have actually! Haha. Next time I will, heck might even just export 2K ProRes 4444 and never look back.
In the end, we'll have to go back to the R3D with EDL or whatever to export 2K DPX for a 2K master.
Compositing etc is being done with DPX sequences.
Currently, the sound design for trailer is being done off of a 720P file in ProTools I think, in a small suite.
Whew, lots of info!
Keep it coming.
