FEATURE: TRAILER - SUPERSEEDS | Super Powered Adventure

Loving this thread (as you can tell). So we know you shot with Red which begs the question: Hard drive space. How are you managing master footage, edited footage, and vfx composited footage. RAIDs? Backups? How are you sending it off to the FX team? Upload? (Each clip at master quality has to be very large tho) Thumb drives in the mail?

Very curious.

Sorry this response took so long, but here's the short of it:

About 8 terrabytes of Data, which includes Audio, some BTS stuff, etc. We shot to 320gb RED DRIVES the entire time, at least two on set each day. Sometimes we ran too far over the halfway mark, which means offloading the data is risky.

Used Seagate GoFlex drives @ 2TB capacities that cost about 150ish a piece. We also bought Firewire 800 Docks for them, an extra 40.00 expense before, but now 20.00 which is dirt cheap.

VFX guys overseas are working on models(texturing, skinning, etc), rigging, animation for all CGi assets so there's nothing to ship there. I imagine when it's all said and done it'll be FTP or a hard-drive expedited. For Compositing and rotoscoping, that's all here in LA being done by my friends and they're close by, so I bought two 1TB drives to switch off as I export DPX sequences in REDCINE -X with adjusted gamma and white balance.

Mostly kicked out 720 offline files with very light color work (mostly just white balance and a soft curve) for editing in FCP. Could have done 1080P, should have actually! Haha. Next time I will, heck might even just export 2K ProRes 4444 and never look back.

In the end, we'll have to go back to the R3D with EDL or whatever to export 2K DPX for a 2K master.

Compositing etc is being done with DPX sequences.

Currently, the sound design for trailer is being done off of a 720P file in ProTools I think, in a small suite.

Whew, lots of info!

Keep it coming.

I swear, Kholi, you could just collect your replies, add a little filler, and publish an e-book for Kindle. Sell it for $2.00! It could be the next Rebel Without a Crew! Except it'd be called, "Rebel With a Slightly Larger, Indespensible Crew... and How to Put One Together." Haha... but then again, it takes away from the filmmaking time, right?

...

Thanks for the detailed reply to my questions (and also the post about how you chose your script.) Hopefully I'll be a little further a long a month from now on getting my own project set up and I'll start a similar thread to just share the info. There isn't really a handbook for this stuff yet! Not for indies, anyway...

Anyway, thanks again, and I can't wait to see the trailer!

No problem at all, sir. I'll probably compile a lot of stuff in a printer friendly e-book, and if people want to donate or something for the info that's all good! But, it'll be free. All of the info I got was free, so just want to return something to the community.

Definitely start a thread/blog here on user so others can see what you're up to, me especially!

Probably the most fun, marketable (and I mean that in a very good way), and entertaining trailer I've seen on user.

If the flim's any good it I don't see why it shouldn't fly out of Redbox and Netflix into the homes of teens wanting to see Superbad on Superseeds. Who knows, maybe it won't even have to be good with a trailer and concept that good. Might still be an underground hit.

I also think you could have just shot that trailer and got a fat option for just the trailer and a treatment!

Wow!

Rocks man!

I like simply Superseeds as a title though...but dang man! Looks pretty awesome!

Any music needs? I have access to "alternative rap" :)

-Martin

Haha! Glad you caught that alternative rap line! I am not opposed to it, by the way! Just need to get that out there. That was a spur of the moment re-write! Justin (Mouse-- Or the kid in the blue and yellow get up) was VERY sick and originally I had written him completely out. But, like a trooper, he showed up at like 9:30PM and said "let's do this". So, I gave him new lines to play with!

I also took your advice on at least the thread title reading "SUPERSEEDS", but if you glance at the about on the website I make an attempt to explain why branding it as AVERY AND PETE is so important. In short, it's the same reason why a White Castle movie isn't known as "The white Castle movie" but just Harold and Kumar. Struggled with that a lot, that's what I ended up with, though.

You know that's got a chip-hop/8-bit sound!? Willing to take a listen for sure!

Thanks for checking it out and the support, sir.

Jack's the first one to comment! Door Prize! Will be sending you my list for groceries... I'm...so..hungry...

Thanks for the positive thoughts, Jack! I had never thought of it as that, but you know what? It really is more like a pitch trailer than the standard trailer, perhaps. Gots me thinking about something...

If anyone has any issues with the playback PLEASE let me know. My friend and his mother are unable to see it inside of FireFox, IE, and other places. It works fine on my laptop, iPhone, and iPad and on another Mac Laptop.

Thanks!

Wow, Kholi! That is unbelievable and I may have to agree with JDS. This trailer is so top-notch and professional. Everything fits and I mean fits perfectly from the music, the jokes and the titles. Very, very creative and marketable. Your fx look stunning and the quality is fantastic. You've done it, my man. You have done it - this will be on shelves!

Looks good dude!

Congrats,

Kegan

EDIT: How'd you go about obtaining the rights to the Rugrats theme song and a couple other commercial pieces? Sorry, if you've already address this and I missed it.

Friend's wife does this law type stuff that I don't understand. Girl Talk has his own licensing deal, he's an independent musician. So, the only two songs that are actually outside of the realm of emailing someone is the Kriss Kross snippet and Rugrats.

A_Rival's the last independent artist.

Thanks for checking it.

Thanks Marlon! Not counting any chickens but glad to be able to show everyone something finally. Feels a lot more solid now.

Off to email a bunch of people, and if anyone's having trouble playing it back PLEASE let me know.
