Tokina 11 16

Can you guys explain to me why you r so into 11-16mm when Tokina 16-50mm almost as wide and 3 times more telephoto than the prior with the same constant aperture? How many steps does it take to cover that extra 5mm difference on the wide end?
Dont get me wrong 11-16mm is a superb lens too, but wouldnt you prefer to cover 16-50 first?
Having said that my next lens will be a tokina 50-135mm, I am really happy with the built & image quality Tokina 16-50mm produces.

if i'm not mistaken, the 11-16 is sharper than the 16-50. people love this lens for it's sharpness and fast aperture. that's why it is more sought after than the comparable canon and sigma models. as far as the difference between 11mm and 16mm, it's more than you'd think. yes, it's only 5mm difference but it's also almost 1/3 shorter. that really does make a difference.

side note: my salesman at samy's told me that the DP from the new jay leno show came in and bought one. he then went out and shot the new opening sequence to the tonight show on a 7d with the 11-16. there's an article about it somewhere. canon has to love that....

Sharpness wise I don't know, you may be right. As for the difference of 5mm, here is the difference in your FOV. {shown on the (in)famous stadium picture based on the lens specs provided by Tokina. Courtesy of Matt ;) }

2 or 3 steps back and you should be able to get the same frame.

yeah, that looks about right. not so much about fitting more into the frame as it is the look of ultra wide angle for me.. that 5mm makes all the difference in the world in the right situation.

There is one for sale at Peace Camera in raleigh. I'm certain they'd ship it to ya. I've been going there since I was 12 so I can vouch for them as a business...

I have the Canon 50 1.8 and a Tamron 28 75. I shoot alot video of landscapes in British Columbia. Mountains, rivers... where big vistas are the norm.
I also have access to a big kit of lenses but no UWA. To most the Tokina may be a specialty lens but probably would be left on my camera most of the time.

You are basically required by law to get the Tokina.

You will not regret it.

ya weird. i have always loved long lenses but lately i have been shooting stills with the 11-16 and my 10mm fisheye almost exclusively... i love the ultra wide look.

I just got the lens yesterday and I have only been able to take about 50 pics with it. But it looks like it will stay on for a while... it is just so different than the other lenses that I have or have used. And the stuff about it being tack sharp is not an exaggeration.

Cameta Camera shows they have some in stock... if you get it with a kit that they throw in some stuff you don't need.. it's $699
read up on cameta... looks like they have some pretty good reseller ratings

Tokina 11-16 works on Nikon & Canon

Tokina 11-16 works on Nikon & Canon

I've had the Nikon mount Tokina 11-16 for a year and love it. Have used it recently on my 7D with an eBay adapter and just ordered the V3 adapter from the UK to have full aperture control on the Canon. Figured it would be worth the investment to have it available for both cameras. The photo below my signature is a 4-shot PS merge of a Nikon/Tokina panorama shot @ 14mm.

I just picked up a 11-16 (by sheer luck) this afternoon at my local camera store. These things are hard to find! I called around ... everyone seemed to be out of stock. I even went to the importer/distributor in Huntington Beach on Friday ... they said 1,000 were on back-order from the factory and they would be lucky to see 200! The last store I called (Silvios) said "give us an hour and we'll see what we can do." Sure enough .. they called back and said they found one ... don't know where or how ... but I jumped on it . It will be interesting to see how the colors compare to my Zeisses.

If people are still looking for this "Paul's Photo" in Torrance California has a bunch of these things for $599.99.

You guys might want to look/call them up.
