Tokina 11 16

My local shop has an 11 16 put away for me. It's pretty expensive... even though it is the cheapest price in Canada and almost NOBODY seems to have them in North America right now. My question is should I just suck it up and buy it? I shot some stuff with my 7D outside the store and really wasn't that rocked by the lens. I do need a UWA lens for video. I'm brand spakin new to the VDSLR game (come from Broadcast Television).... I'm not used to coughing up big cake for lenses.

Any opinions appreciated.

What other lenses do you have? I would cover 17-50 first (or a 17-40 + a 50) as that is the most usable range (for me anyway), then add the 11-16; but some people would add an 85 first. It depends on what you shoot. The 11-16 is kind of a funny lens, don't get me wrong, it is amazing, just not much range and kind of a specialty unit. A typical cine prime set will have 18, 25, 35, 50 and 85 (some rental sets don't even have an 18, you have to add that on) and that is a good range to cover first.

I have the Canon 50 1.8 and a Tamron 28 75. I shoot alot video of landscapes in British Columbia. Mountains, rivers... where big vistas are the norm.
I also have access to a big kit of lenses but no UWA. To most the Tokina may be a specialty lens but probably would be left on my camera most of the time.

I'm interested in the Tokina but I have a couple of questions:

I'm going to get a Canon 550D soon, but if later in the year Nikon bring out a medium-level camera with 1080p I'll get that too. To save duplicating lenses, would it be a good idea to get the Tokina as a Nikon fit and use a mechanical adapter for the Canon? I don't mind an automatic lens being rendered manual (by an adapter) for video shooting.

And leading on from that, a specific question about the Tokina: if I do use a mechanical adapter, can a lens owner confirm for me that you can use aperture-zoom-focus manually on this lens? Does it have physical rings on the barrel for all three, or are some things internal -- automatic only?

Cheers.

Not a good idea as the nikon mount version does not have an iris ring! Get the canon mount version if you are shooting canon.

Run, don't walk to buy this lens.

LOL

something must be done to stop the excessive proliferation of 11-16 threads, they are out of control, so far matts stadium pic is the sole warrior attempting to stem the flow !

... and the zacuto shootout threads come to think of it

I got to the post too late and J beat me to it. The stadium picture should be on every wide angle post.

If I had time I would steal your head from your avatar pic and photoshop it onto every person in that stadium, y'know matrix stylee

That would be awesome, except for when you replaced my wife's head with mine.

She MIGHT have a problem w/ that. :violent5:

When I get my Tokina 11-16, I hope I can shoot just as great a still which I will as well proudly continue to post to the list....

It is really an amazing shot and I for one don't tire of seeing it.

Adorama, by the way, told me in late Feb that their ETA on the Tokina was April 5. It is either revised later or they are already in back order since the web site now shows late April.
