Tokina 11-16 or 10-17

I realize that I may not go for either of these, depending on replies.

I know these two lenses are somewhat different in their applications, and that the 11-16 would be more ideal for video because of its fixed aperture, etc.

However, it seems that the distortion on the 116 is often more apparent than the 107, especially when shooting at odd angles.

I do plan on getting another wide-zoom in the future (16-35 or 17-40 L), which may cover off some of the range, but I need some guidance.

Does anyone have any good test footage from the 107? (Or the 116, I guess.)

Best wishes,

i should also mention that purchasing the 16-35 would probably preclude me from purchasing multiple lenses in a given year. the wife would not approve.

What other lenses do you have? You should cover the rest of your range first (18, 25, 35, 50 and 85) as the 11-16 is a specialty lens that is not something you will always need. That said, there is a reason the 11-16 gets re-packaged for pl mount and sold for $3500. It is an amazing lens!

You mentioned the 16-35 or 17-40 and those are both very nice lenses but not at all the sane application as the tokina. Those ranges are much more general purpose on your aps-c body. I would definatly get one of those first. A better choice if you don't shoot full frame is the canon EF-S 17-55 2.8 (or the tamron with the same range that has VC). This will cover most all of your needs for shooting.

Can we put some kind of temporary ban on Matt posting that picture?

Or at the very least, go shoot something new, Gottshalk!

Duclos likes the Tokina 11-16mm enough to offer it in a PL mount:

I never tire looking at Matts shot - detail in almost every square mm.

I am getting a little tired of repeated posts doubting the advice to buy one of the most recommended lenses on this and other posts. After all, there must be a reason they are so hard to come buy. The Tokina together with the Tamron 17-50mm VC cover quite a range at a very reasonable cost.

All I'm sayin' is go out and shoot something new, Matt. There's got to be something interesting up there in DC worth shooting.

Or maybe bring it to Vegas and we'll find plenty of things worth shooting. :D
