C100: Thinking about moving to a GH4

My 2p: I enjoy this forum.

Most of the time.

I contribute to it as best I can and I've learned a lot from fellow users.

But it's occasionally let down by threads like this, that descend into noise and useless blah, often hogged by show-boating amateurs - and using up bandwidth that could otherwise be engaged in useful conversation. I for one am actually interested in how a GH4 might work in my professional workflow.

There are a significant number of us - McBob included - who are making a living out of this. We're good at what we do, because our clients come back to us time after time for more. We pay our mortgages and some of us support families and employ others in our businesses.

Michael, I think your posts have become tedious. You're an amateur - you said so earlier in the thread ("I'm my own boss, I'm not a professional.) So I guess you have yet to experience the pressure, anxiety, responsibility and commitment required to make these cameras justify their existence and capital expenditure.

These kind of posts erode the credibility of this forum, which is otherwise one of the best resources in the world for these cameras.

Am I taking this seriously? Hell yes - it's my living and my wife and two kids depend on it. I don't live with mum and dad or cashflow an expensive hobby with some other unrelated desk job.

Sorry to be grumpy, but please - let's get back to talking about useful stuff.

If I'm off piste here, perhaps someone could direct me towards another forum just for professionals.

Cheers,

Ben.

Thanks for the informative post there Ben, yes, I must say contrary to your little-rant, you've seemed to have added nothing useful either, other than calling me a "show boating amateur", and informing us of your on going finical monthly commitments.

Speaking of non-proffesionals, the original poster Jbregar is also a self admitted amateur like myself. It's a fine line these days between a hobbyist and a professional, all that means to me is a hobbyist has more time to enjoy the craft at his or her own leisure. Does this mean what they produce is any less valid? There have been quite a few as you say "show boating "amateurs" who have made some mind blowing stuff. Personally, I'm into content, so extreme resolution is not that much a concern, my 5D3 will despite the Canon bashing, always remained far above anything I'm capable of achieving...... hell I can say that about my little ole HV-40 to be honest.

In my day job people call me a "master" I don't like that term because I'm never truly satisfied with my work. So when I say I'm an amateur I say this in all humility, and acknowledge I have much to learn, when you stop learning you stagnate, so I hesitate to call myself a professional in this context. However, I guess technically speaking I am a professional, due to the fact I've made hundreds of thousands of dollars from my videos, and have been approached by others to make videos for them.

I do hold immense respect you guys who do this day in and day out. Do I aspire to being a professional film maker? No. I do this primarily to promote my day job, and perhaps most importantly because I'm obsessed with it, and love it.

Now to the point at hand. This forum it seems is for both professionals and amateurs a like or am I mistaken? In fact, this very thread was started by a self admitted amateur, in order to discuss the pros and cons of going from a C100 to a GH4.

I've spent the last few months watching every video made comparing these two cameras and reading everything I can. I've heard the exact opposite opinions by other professionals on the GH4. Some love it and some don't. Ben, you are just another voice in the wilderness. Everything I've stated about the GH4 has be said on numerous forums, as well as in YouTube and Vimeo comments. So, yes you can pull rank, call me an amateur, however, I'm not stating anything that hasn't already been said by hundreds of other professionals. I mean who should I believe YOU, or my lying eyes?

Thankyou Ben for putting far more eloquently what I was going to say. Michael has been trolling here and elsewhere for a while now in a lame attempt to goad gh4 users into some kind of slanging match... Let it go please.... (I own a c100 not gh4)

I don't know if this qualifies as "trolling" that's usually a derogatory term used for those whom you disagree with. Perhaps my style of humor is a bit much at times, for that I apologize.

So back to GH4 vs. C100 (Kindly continue the ongoing subject at your inbox)

To summurize:

C100:
Larger sensor
Better lowlight performance
Lower rolling shutter
higher dynamic range
XLR inputs, and better audio overall
Internal NDs
better ergonomic design and controls with more customizability and professional inputs/outputs
dual media slots
Better autofocus system (for video)
Stronger body overall, looks and feels more professional

GH4:
Higher resolution
Smaller size and weight
Overcrank
Better EVF and articulating Screen
shoots stills

I left the Canon colour science and subjective elements out, for example how filmic the image looks, that's something for the actual user to decide.

Excellent post. I would add In defense of the GH4 it shoots slow-mo. With the C100 it's a work around but can be done.

Morning all. As for the OP and various differences between the two cameras, its been covered.
