C100: Thinking about moving to a GH4

I sold all my cameras and picked up an iPhone 6 plus.
....

You guys and your silly big cameras.

Nah, I'm staying with my iPhone 5S, I much prefer the 'vintage' noise that it gives, and since I never clean the lens, it gives me that blooming highlights, ala Kaminski, creamy 'filmic' look... it's real grease film on that lens, as my face and hands are untapped oil resources... money just can't buy that quality.

Might want to review who's doggedly defending their personal camera preference to the thread at large.

The C100 is excellent. The GH4 is also excellent. The C100 is better than the GH4 in several areas, the GH4 is better than the C100 in some areas, both are better and worse than other cameras (heck, truth be told, most prosumer cameras are relatively excellent). Any given person can look at their respective feature set and make a perfectly valid purchase, based on their personal needs, of either platform, and happily use it to its fullest to create compelling media. It doesn't have to be a contest.

I think something to support this is...sometimes I can see 4-5 GH4 videos in a row. I'll really not like 4 of them.....and then there is one that looks fantastic. Makes me completely rethink the camera. Then I am reminded....these days....its really not about the camera very much at all. Its about the DP, talent, lighting, composition....ect. Its almost like the camera has taken a back seat on the priority list....because for the most part, most modern cameras look pretty darn good. The truth is, a good DP can make most things look good...thats what really peaks my interest.

The iPhone 5s is crap. You are clearly NOT a filmmaker. Even with your so called vintage imperfections. Step up or you wont be taken seriously as a pro.

I recently participated in a shoot where a C100 was used. We have permission to use the material publicly so, I may be able to post a pointer to a finished clip on vimeo. The effort was the first time the person who's project it is, ever used any form of 'video/film'... so she was using iMovie, etc. to produce it.

But I was impressed with shooting at ISO 3200 in a 'dark' enviornment. I set up lights so the talent had about 5-10 footcandles worth of illumination, and I think it went rather well.

Because this was a 'no budget' project we didn't have time to clear the beach of 'distractions', so some of the willing suspension of disbelief for the 'periodness' suffers.

Since I've recently bought a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, I'll probably not be upgrading my GH-1 to the GH-4... so I'll not comment on how the GH-4 would have performed at ISO 3200.

Anyone who doesn't shoot exclusively on 70mm film is a total amateur. I can't believe we're even having this discussion; take your toys and go home, let the big kids handle the real work.

It would suck (stated simply from experience). That's fine for those who own lights or otherwise don't approach 3200iso very often, a deal killer for those who do.

We really want for nothing these days... however you shoot, there's a camera that will do that for ~$6K or less, it seems... unless of course you're shooting for a big broadcaster with a mess of minimum tech specs to appease. Research, rent, and... um... roll? or something.

Even if one had a flood lamp mounted on the camera for 'event' coverage, there's still the problem of crackly 'blacks' that would probably not sit will with modern viewers.

Plus that big light image seems to be going out of favor for more 'natural' light that looks like it was supposed to be there for the event participants and not for just getting a moving picture image.

Sure, if you like mushy things like oatmeal or mashed potatoes or overripe peaches or a middle aged editor's belly... Some of us don't compromise and need to be able to resolve every last nose hair on our subject from 15 yards away, to fully capture the nuance in their semi-annual corporate report.

Exactly... situations where you can't light and there isn't enough light, don't bring a GH4 or other camera that doesn't do so well in the un-light.

Oh come on now mcbob...... it a little bit you and a little bit me! I don't have a dog in the fight.

Haha. Well, sorry I started this. :)

For me, the small size is probably going to make the decision. My C100 only comes out on "video" shoots and those are a lot fewer than I'd like (I'm not a pro). I'd ideally like something I can take along traveling and blend into the environment with a bit more.

It also doesn't hurt that I can fly the GH4 and a pancake lens on my hexacopter for aerials.

I'm not 100% decided... I decided to order a GH4 and see how well I can live with the compromises. That said, if its as good as it seems to be (some of the 4K stuff on my MBP's retina display is disgustingly gorgeous) the C100 will most likely find a new owner (maybe Michael).

jbregar, six pages of comments and you knew exactly what you wanted all along! Hahaha! If small is what you want, you'll like the GH4. It's a good quality camera too.

A post deleted. Don't mind the banter back and forth, however personal comments made against a single or group of users will not be tolerated. Cheers

EDIT: Just read back a bit. Theres a few postulating posts, or close to. Read the forum rues if unsure.

My 2p: I enjoy this forum.

Most of the time.

I contribute to it as best I can and I've learned a lot from fellow users.

But it's occasionally let down by threads like this, that descend into noise and useless blah, often hogged by show-boating amateurs - and using up bandwidth that could otherwise be engaged in useful conversation. I for one am actually interested in how a GH4 might work in my professional workflow.

There are a significant number of us - McBob included - who are making a living out of this. We're good at what we do, because our clients come back to us time after time for more. We pay our mortgages and some of us support families and employ others in our businesses.

Michael, I think your posts have become tedious. You're an amateur - you said so earlier in the thread ("I'm my own boss, I'm not a professional.) So I guess you have yet to experience the pressure, anxiety, responsibility and commitment required to make these cameras justify their existence and capital expenditure.

These kind of posts erode the credibility of this forum, which is otherwise one of the best resources in the world for these cameras.

Am I taking this seriously? Hell yes - it's my living and my wife and two kids depend on it. I don't live with mum and dad or cashflow an expensive hobby with some other unrelated desk job.

Sorry to be grumpy, but please - let's get back to talking about useful stuff.

If I'm off piste here, perhaps someone could direct me towards another forum just for professionals.

Cheers,

Ben.

Thankyou Ben for putting far more eloquently what I was going to say. Michael has been trolling here and elsewhere for a while now in a lame attempt to goad gh4 users into some kind of slanging match... Let it go please.... (I own a c100 not gh4)
