C100: Thinking about moving to a GH4

Depends what kind of work you're doing if you need low light.

I shoot weddings every weekend -> Definitely need to go over 1600 ISO. C100 is great for it. Debating an A7s as a B-cam for weddings. I've seen the noise from a GH4 (shot at a wedding reception), definitely not the prettiest!

It doesn't need much conversation, the C100 is the better camera in everything except: Resolution, HFR and small size. Everyone will have different priorities.

Get both! These cameras compliment each other very well. I recommended a C100/GH4 package to a friend and he has been very happy with it. C100 main cam duty, audio, low light and the GH4 is great B cam, timelapse, slow mo, 4K.

IMO buying and selling cameras of nearly the same generation is mostly a good way to go broke unless you're absolutely sure one will provide a feature that will earn you more money than the other.

Also depends on what work you do... if you freelance by hiring yourself out as a shooter on various crews, you'll get more work with a C100. Canon made itself ubiquitous, so it mixes well with lots of other crews. GH4 is inexpensive enough that nobody with any serious budget will rent it, they'll just buy instead. Doesn't matter that they can both be made to look the same... nobody wants to deal with that on tight schedules.

If you can only afford one camera, the GH does offer some nice flexibility if you occasionally need to do something more than shoot 24,30,or 60i. The GH can do low light well enough with fast glass (and f 0.95 focus is actually manageable with the 2.3x crop)... but that costs quite a bit. You can get passive XLR adapters aplenty for the GH, but it's not the same as having discreet controls on a well-integrated XLR unit like the C100.

I do indoors shooting of guitarists, concerts etc. and how-to videos of guitar making. I rarely ever shoot outside. It's too bad because I really wanted to fall in love with the GH4, it would be the perfect fit for a B cam to my 5D3 with magic lantern, price wise! I don't need the XLR adaptor because I use external mics and pre-amp interface and sync the sound later...... but the digital look to me is a real turn off, besides having a C100 lets me be more creative when it comes to lens.

I shoot pretty close to portrait style at times, and most people don't appreciate a 4K camera in their face! In fact I prefer a slightly soft image..... my 5D3 works just fine for that.

Well, I should have said price wise! I already have most of the Canon lens I need. If you have the glass already, getting the same glass for the GH4 can be rather pricey, considering I need the glass I have for photography as well. It would be nuts to invest in all new glass...... and for what? A GH4 with a digitalized look with more resolution. I'm already familiar with my lenes.

My big hangups with the GH4 are the loss of DOF control and the low-light capability (spoiled here with the C100).

As you say, the C100 has better low-light capability than the GH4. If this is a high-priority feature and you shoot over 1600 ISO often, the GH4 is likely not a good fit for your needs.

Regarding DOF, you can get the Metabones Canon EF Speed Booster which will allow you use your existing EF lenses with the GH4 and will actually give you a wider FOV than on the C100, resulting in the potential for shallower DOF (given the same framing).

But my camera is better than yours!! Oh wait...

;)

Well, it's a bit like watching a game of "king of the hill"...... isn't it? Watching the big camera get attacked by the little cameras.

It's hard for GH4 owners to take any criticism of their new acquisition, after all, many of them jumped ship from Canon, for greener pastures, and a more digitalized image. If you state reasons one camera is better than the other here on a Video Forum of all places, good Lord! people tend to not like that much and say silly things like..... "But my camera is better than yours!! Oh wait...". Or "that's rich".

I'm not complaining this is actually lots of fun.

Despite the attempts at persuasion and all the reasoning used by the fans..... I shall be purchasing a C100, for many reasons. If I were forced to have to get a GH something I'd get the GH3 it has a better image in IMHO than the GH4 and is quite affordable....... I think I'm going to be very happy with my C100 and a 5D3 that shoots raw if need be.

I sold all my cameras and picked up an iPhone 6 plus. It has more features for video than both those cameras combined and when I'm done shooting I can play games and have face time conversations with my friends. Again. Try that with those other two cameras. With the money I got selling three GH4's and my C100 I bought this really nice case for my new main camera. The iPhone 6 plus. Check it out. Awesome! Only comes in black unfortunately but thats really the only downside.

You guys and your silly big cameras.

do you think c100 + ninja is good for narrative work?

I think its very good. I use this combination on a regular basis. Even though this rig is a few years old now...man, I have not regretted it one minute. Its just such an easy workflow (specially with the ninja to prores) to create great looking stuff. Having owned RED and a bunch others....the C100/ninja is the workhorse of the bunch. I acquire more footage with it than any other camera because its fast, and looks great.

Might want to review who's doggedly defending their personal camera preference to the thread at large.

The C100 is excellent. The GH4 is also excellent. The C100 is better than the GH4 in several areas, the GH4 is better than the C100 in some areas, both are better and worse than other cameras (heck, truth be told, most prosumer cameras are relatively excellent). Any given person can look at their respective feature set and make a perfectly valid purchase, based on their personal needs, of either platform, and happily use it to its fullest to create compelling media. It doesn't have to be a contest.
