The Vintage Lens Thread

Which is the reason so many fall victim to the horrible disease of Lens Buying Addiction:cheesy:. There's literally too many good lenses out there to really use and they're cheap! Not a good combination.

Frank: Hi, the name is Frank, .... Frank Glencairn.

Group: Hi Frank.

Frank: I´m here because I...I just can`t stop buying this vintage glass

Group leader: Don´t worry Frank, you are not alone. But coming here was a first step in the right direction.

Frank: There are others?

Group leader: Yes, look at Billy here for example, he lost his home and wive to vintage lenses, and Jessica worked as a stripper in her free time to get the money.

Frank: Ohmygawd, I had no idea....

:cheesy: Frank

Kostas: Hi, I am Kostas and I think I have LBA too. I feel a bit sad each time I have to give away some old lenses to fund other vintage glass.

Group: Hi Kostas

Kostas: For instance, Frank here suggested I should get some medium format lenses and I couldn't resist getting this 80 f2.8 Biometar, even if I don't have a Pentacon six to EOS adapter yet. I had to put for sale a couple of babied FD lenses for this.

Group: Don't worry Kostas we all know what it means.

Kostas: There was this Enna Ennalyt too, and this Meyer Primoplan, and then a Russian one: the Mir-24N, I couldn't resist bidding. Well the Enna had a fungus but I will have it cleaned. It's a nice piece of gl ass.
Each time I tell myself, we are over, the lens set is now complete, but then again these people from the forum suggest more and more vintage glass. Anamorphics, medium format, radioactive ones...

Group: Relax. We have all been through that.

Kostas: Thankfully. I am not alone :)

There is a 12-Step program for those who may be seeking help:

1. We admitted we were powerless over glass—that our lives had become unmanageable.
2. Came to believe that other things in life other than focal lengths and aperture could restore us to sanity.
3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of someone not under the influence of LBA.
4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves after checking the latest Ebay listings.
5. Admitted to our cameras, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
6. Were entirely ready to have camera and lens technicians remove all these defects of character.
7. Humbly deleted from memory cards our shortcomings.
8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all as long as that meant we could keep our lenses.
9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them, others, or the glass.
10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it even if the camera's metering system was at fault.
11. Sought through reading owner's manuals to improve our conscious contact with our cameras as we understood them.
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to LBA sufferers, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

I went on a buying bender. . . . well there was this Zeiss 20mm f/2.8 Flektogon you see, and then . . . and then . . . . and then I had an Ohmigawd credit card statement :cry:.
So it's bread and cheese until the new year (When VAT goes up by 2.5% :kali:)

OHMYGAWD!

Are you nuts? Linking a drug dealer?

Boooohoooo! I was clean for 2 weeks and now this.

Now I have my lens buying disorder again - there you have it.

Are you happy now?

Just picked these up...

all of em cost less than 200$ in total. Each is hand rebuilt by a lens smith i know. He is my secret weapon in NYC cinematography... He is rebuilding a russian Cinema lens for me from the ground up. He is also going to convert all these lenses to PL for me.... :)

Im using these lenses for a photo series im doing with a friend. The rules are all photos mut be taken @ the lowest ISO you can get, ISO 50 on a 5D, and or the slowest film stock w can find @ minumun Apeture (F16, F22, F32....) and everythign else is up to you, flashes, long shutters, double exposures, etc... what ever you want..... Sort of a F64 club for the new age.

where in nyc do you go? i was there a few days ago and i tried to find this russian lens repair shop in chelsea but it was closed on sundays... i'll be back in nyc on the 6th for one day and wanted to go lens shopping...

I am an admitted sufferer of LBA...

My favorite is the old style (metal grip with the coveted 250 XXXX serial #) Minolta Rokkor 58mm/1.2 lens. Simply fabulous 3D look with great sharpness from f/2 onwards, nice softness wide open at f/1.2, smooth focusing, etc. Bit of a chore converting this baby to the EOS mount.

I sort of started many folks on cinema5D to look for this lens. I paid $100 (including camera) but some guys have paid nine times that. My favorite lens. The other lens I like is the Canon 45/2.8 TSE...

Here is the lens before I removed the back mount...

I have a question...alot of these lenses seem pretty short in length ...case in point my supertakumar 50mm. Is it possible to use a mattbox with these lenses. I've never used one so i duno...but it seems to me from pics i have seen theres a donut ring thing that attaches to the lens to prevent light from entering. It seems it would interfere with the focus ring on these small lenses. Again....i dont know.

Have you seen the length of the canon 50mm? Or even the Nikon E series? Not only could we not put a mattebox on these things, we couldn't get the focus gears on them either. That's why I don't fool with them.

It's another great reason that real cinema lenses are designed a certain way. Usually with a 110mm front element that doesn't turn. There's plenty of room there for matteboxes, focus rings, etc.

sweet. gonna go shoot some photos now...

will post up... lets maybe open a sister thread in the Photo section....

Here is a Vintage lens, photo/footage thread....

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=221869

USE IT!!!!! i wanna see photos all up in there! embrace the flaws people, use it to good effect...

Good idea, I bought two more lenses today (Nikkor-S 50mm 1.4 and a Fujinon 55mm 1.8). When they come in I'll add some things. I need to find something cool to shoot this weekend on my Nikkor H-C 300mm.
