The SONY FS-700 & The Odyssey7 - Let´s hope to see some affordable HQ-Output!

Dear Essami,

Our recommended model for the FS700 is currently the Odyssey7Q.

Even if you never want to record 4K, but you do want to shoot high-speed, for slo-mo, then you will want the Odyssey7Q.

Please stay tuned for more announcements, we just need final approval from Sony.

If you do not want the extra features of the Odyssey7Q, and you do not want high-speed, and you do not want 4K, then the Odyssey7 should be fine for you.

Note: The Odyssey7Q has the extra "guts" to allow us to put in more features.

Here is a comparison:

Dan-

as far as my work is concerned, a 24 hour rental period makes elegant sense (though I suppose could end up with some waste when switching between days and nights...) I, for one, am extremely excited about a manufacturer adopting a lease model when it comes to firmware. simple and brilliant. I own a nanoFlash and have used it on a wide variety of shoots with a number of cameras including my FS100 & FS700. it's even flown on a blimp. while other external recorders have failed me on shoots, after years of use, my nanoFlash just WORKS.

that said, I am very excited about the Odyssey 7s (already have a deposit in.) while they obviously include a number of excellent image analysis tools, the question I have is this: will they have other tools critical to its use as an onboard monitor? the main features I would want would be onscreen markers (preset and custom) and aspect control. with 1.3x anamorphics, the ability to get a proper 2.35 on a 16x9 sensor would be really important (currently not possible on the Gemini.) the other usual suspects would be blue only, pixel-to-pixel with panning and some kind of auto scaling, now that more DSLRs are offering "clean" feeds. are these features you plan to include in the Odysseys? thanks for always participating in the community.

Dear BlackdogDylan,

The nanoFlash, in our humble opinon, is a great device. It has flown, essentially unprotected, to 99,200 feet, operating at -59C, -75F (of course it was self heating some, but 5.8 watts of heat are not much defense against -75F.

The Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q (hopefully) will extend this proud tradition.

You asked about other tools. We have not announced all of the tools that we will be adding.

One of our unannounced plans is to allow for custom Aspect Ratio markers.

Nor have we made mention of Onion Skinning, the ability to overlay an image over a live video feed to provide a way to precise position a camera, lens, and items in the scene for continuity. This is in our Odyssey7Q model.

Also, we will be performing a desqueeze. We have this on the Gemini 4:4:4 but we need to improve and expand upon it.

We will support blue only and monochrome (this has been announced).

For 1 to 1 Pixel Mode, we offer 5 areas, Upper Left, Upper Right, Lower Left, Lower Right and Center. This makes it easy, as one just touches the area and then we show that area in 1 to 1 Pixel Mode. Thus, once in 1 to 1 Pixel Mode (Zoom) it is very quick and easy to move around.

We have not announced auto scaling for DSLR's, but I feel that this is a feature we should add, and we certainly have the capability to add it.

We will be listening and implementing as many customer requests as practical.

I hope this helps.

Respectfully,

Dan Keaton

I hope this helps.

it certainly does, Dan. I appreciate you revealing some details before NAB. and I hope this open dialogue helps CD to implement all the features professionals (and amateurs) desire to make the Odyssey the killer product we all know it can be. thanks.

Dear Blackdogdylan,

Thank you for the kind words.

I will be traveling starting tomorrow, to NAB.

I wish to invite everyone who goes to NAB to come to our booth, C6713, Central Hall.

The new BMC is a lot of camera for $4K.

I think if Sony want to extend the life of the FS700 a bit, they need to increase the internal Codec to 4:2:2 10bit 50mbps (to somewhat match the 4:2:2 10 bit Pro-Res of the BMC) and someone should make a small, compact 4K recorder. Because yes... the BMC 4K is looking really good right now.

For some us we want higher frame rates... other goodies that come with a camera... I see the Blackmagic working well for drama or comedy.. not so much for now for action...

Convergent Design announced today a very interesting Sony FS700 external recording option. 4k (compressed) and 2k RAW recording at up to 240fps (for up to 45 minutes continuously) . This is fantastic news for FS700 users adding new features that we never thought were possible with this camera. The recording codecs for the FS700 will be available to both rent and buy. You do not need any other adaptor to make use of the Odyssey 7Q . A straight output from the FS700 to the Convergent Design will enable 4k, and 2k RAW. Being able to record 240fps continuously for up to 45 minutes in full 2k RAW really takes the FS700 to a whole other level.
One quick note the Odyssey 7Q is required for these features to work. They will not work with the Odyssey 7.

here is the catch (@ 08:56)
it looks like 7q won't have FS700 specific codec. So it is up to user either they rent it or buy it. In the video also it has been confirmed that output of Sony FS700 is compressed. What 7Q does is decompressed it and store it on SDDs.
Personally if the output is compressed I would like to figure out that codec compression and record as it is.

let's see how much Sony will charge to unleash 4k and how much CD will charge for their FS700 codec...

It's a great action cam. Not a great slo mo cam. Global shutter is really cool, it looks great on the f55...

I didn't hear anything about 700 specific codecs, was that info from somewhere else? Is there a sony press release yet as Mike mentions in the video?

As for compression, RAW is pretty compressed already as it's really just monochrome, you can compress it further. I can see 4k at 30 fps, but 240fps at 2K, wouldn't that need lossy compression? He doesn't say whether it's lossless or lossy or in fact what you get at the other end - cinemaDNG, or something else. So it's early days on the details, unless of course i'm missing information.

2K at 240 implies some kind of downsampling from 4K at the camera end though, i guess if the camera organises the 4K RAW into RGB mono components and scales those down (before a debayer) perhaps that would allow for that.

All very interesting, i also wonder if CD has the exclusive on this or whether Sony are talking to other recorder manufacturers. My only down about the monitor is if you're operating and using it as a VF then it's quite big and bulky to be hanging off the front of a cam when handheld. Minor point though, once i have all the details then i'd be very interested in getting one, so long as i didn't have to rent the codec all the time.

cheers

It looks nice, the dynamic range is a bit less than the previous one also the sensor size appears to be smaller than S35 although i don't know if there's an official size. I've read 21.12 x 11.88 mm, the 700 is 23.6 x 13.3.

It will be interesting to see if they added a OLPF or whether it's still aliasing like crazy on certain subjects.

It's an amazing price though, but i'd stick with my 700 and hopefully something like the 7Q if the footage out of the 700 is worth it.

BMD missed a trick (again) with sticking to an EF mount. They should have done a reduced mirrorless mount to open up the options of so many different lenses. Including adapters like the speedbooster, tilt'n'shift, helicoid focusing adapters... That is the one thing that would make me think twice about an F5. The sheer flexibility of that e mount is quite amazing.

So? . ...why don't get them BOTH ? FS-700 for SLOW MOTION and BMP4K as second camera for whip pan ?? :)

The camera I like the most is the F55... but always looking for different ways of doing things if the budgets are not there...

Now what might be interesting is this... see how the 1080i out of the pocket camera works... doing slow mo like we did in the old days before 60p... use the 4k model for example a friend is in the National Guard... they're doing maneuvers soon... he's an okay camera operator but his commander will let him film... so then downsize to 1080p to get that perfect frame...

But again... I don't think the camera will really hit the market in July... if they did... might be something to think about...

Question For Dan Keaton;

What kind of delay will there be between real time action and the image shown on the Odyssey from the SDI out of the FS700?

I am currently using a monitor from the FS700's HDMI port and the delay is imperceptible and therefore usable for monitoring purposes. Will the Odyssey introduce any additonal delays to a traditional monitor when being fed signal from the FS700 ?
