The Small Multiple

Ah yeah, for audio we did the same. But Joe also did the CC and for that needed full res files. Thus the 32 gig.

Yeah, when he did sound work, and while I was cutting we shared via our servers.
 
Wow...! How did you get him 32gigs worth of material? Did you send multiple data-DVD's, a harddrive, etc.?

I think it is fascinating how many people on this board collaborate and how much better it makes the final product! And it is amazing that much of this collaboration takes place over multiple states, time zones and even continents...

Makes me wonder what life would be like without the internet! :)

I sent him multiple DVDs.

but next time I want to try this. I will switch to FCP, which he has on his end, and if we keep duplicates of the footage on each end, I wonder if we can just swap project files back and forth. I wonder if that will work...
 
Hmm...I've thought about trying that as well. If you ever try it let us know how that goes!

I think it would work, in theory, as long as you don't reference any files he doesn't have and the file structure always stays the same (which is why it would be a challenge for me)! :D
 
Alright, time for a little "How-not-to" lesson! :)

There are a couple of simple effects shots in this film. Because I get stressed during production when we seem to be falling behind schedule (which is pretty much all the time), I sometimes make stupid compromises. For example, I knew I was going to need to composite my actors separately on the background but I decided NOT to set up the greenscreen behind them because we were in a rush.

Fortunately, my AD had the foresight to at least make me shoot a clean plate as well as each actor separately. This helped me retain some of my sanity but I should have still used the greenscreen.

But because I didn't I had to do hours of rotoscoping until my eyeballs looked like this:

Anyway, here is a look at my rotoscoping progress in After Effects. It is not incredibly detailed due to the nature of the final shot (shaky as hell) and the fact that certain parts of each actor are obscured.

So, just a note of warning...if you are ever in a rush don't be stupid like me and neglect to set up the greenscreen. It will save you hours of time, bloodshot eyes and callouses on your mouse finger... :cry:
 
Wow, yeah rotoscoping is not fun. Too bad you couldn't get that screen green up, time is always the enemy in low budget movies isn't it.
 
Yeah, time is always the enemy...but stupidity was the culprit on this one! Also, lack of planning. I hadn't thought through exactly what I wanted the effect shot to look like so I wasn't 100% sure how I needed to set it up. That is probably what led to me just doing nothing and then paying for it in the end! :)

Here is another screen grab of a particle simulation I am playing around with to incorporate into the effects shot. I bought the Particular plug-in a while back but hadn't really gotten to play around with it and use it much until now:

Looking at it now as a still from a screen grab it looks pretty lame...but when it is in motion with all of the sound effects and stuff it is a bit more interesting (hopefully). :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I remember reading this script and thinking, "Wow, cool idea for a short!"

Good luck with the finished product. It has a lot of potential. :)
 
Aaahhhh...now I see the relief everyone else has expressed at finally getting this thing uploaded! :2vrolijk_08:

After so much work, tweaking, various versions, compression after compression test...the thing is finally done. A great feeling!

I just checked the Submission Status thread and there are already around 50 films uploaded!!!! And I know there are still some who are waiting till more "last minute" than me...totally stoked!

Best of luck to everyone out there. Looking forward to seeing the finished films! :cheesy:

I am SO PUMPED to watch so many of these films! Just seeing the grabs and hearing the stories behind the scenes makes me feel like a "long-distance PA"... :)

I would like to hear more about your post-workflow when you have caught up on sleep and can share. Sounded pretty intense...

It was DEFINITELY intense...but that was due to inexperience. If I had it to do over, it would go smoother. I will definitely fill you in sometime. Drop by my thread and ask anything you wish. :laugh: I am still a zombie...but slightly more rested.:zombie_smiley:

I'm trying to stay away from here as much as possible until they actually post the films. I spend too much time poking around here as it is...and I'm about to have 7-hours worth of films to watch!?! :)
 
Hey man I really enjoyed your film!! Awesome composition, great directing, great special effects, and AWESOME cinematography.
 
One of my early favourites.
Loved the premise, solid SFX's, and decent acting. Cinematography and lighting was excellent!

The props were quite good as well.
Really enjoyed the ending!

Thought the lighting and shots were very tight! I read that script on moviepoet so unfortunately I knew the ending. The cool part was how you executed it. Well done.
 
Excellent. The short I wanted to see the most and it certainly delivered on all fronts. Flawless cgi, amazing production design, and a great score. The voice-over was the perfect tone and blended great. I loved the concept and you pulled it off great in a very believable way. Very good lighting as well.

The only weak moment I could find after watching it twice was that "let me work" moment which seemed good, but just a little forced imho.

Overall, one of my absolute favorites.
 
This was fantastic. I honestly have no criticisms. Really solid work. Very Moving.

This one is definitely in the top must see shorts of this contest!
