Audio Change from DVX to NLE

As long as you captured the tape via firewire, the audio shouldn't be attenuated. If you used an analogue capture device, you may have to re-calibrate the input trim.

Have you double-checked the meter callibration on the DVX100B?

In your NLE, generate 30 seconds of 1kHz tone (-20 dB). Output that via firewire to a DV tape, pop the tape into the DVX100B and see where the tone hits on the meters and `phones.

Dude - on the DVX, the red starts at -12dB; red is NOT 0dBFS. Many people set the audio levels on their DVXs a little low because of this odd metering setup... just be aware next time!

Yeah, a bit is a bit is a bit. As long as you don't go analog, the audio will not change unless you intentionally change it.

As Ullanta said, the meters on the DVX can be confusing and you might have recorded lower then you intended. Ideally, you are hitting the first red about once or twice per line. Opinions on that can vary slightly and it will depend on the range of your subject's speaking voice.

Setting up your computer for proper monitoring has lots of potential pitfalls so you might honestly be hearing it low because your monitors are not set-up right. Check where your peak meters are hitting on your "low" audio.

I shot a 1khz tone from Vegas over to the DVX Via Firewire. The bars on the DVX only went up by 8 dots. ?? About half way up.

Yet when I stuck a 1khz tone onto the time line and played it through it maxed out the meters on the DVX. I'm not sure how to adjust the meters on the DVX. Can you?

When I adjusted the audio for the interviews It was just hitting on the first red mark on the Left CHANNEL.
I have another shoot with the same client on the 20th and I have to get this audio right.

How far into the red on the DVX meters should I let it go?

Is your 1kHz tone at -20 db or -12? Sounds like it is -20db and halfway up the DVX meters would be about correct.

Did you leave the gain for the output above 0db? I don't know Vegas so I am not even sure if this is possible but that would be my guess.

Since it sounds like you are only using one channel you might want to try the splitting the signals between the two channels and sending one of the channels a slightly hotter signal. Not a good crutch to become dependent on but will help you until you nail down where to keep your peaks.

Good luck
