The New F

So, anyone know if this REDUSER post is accurate?

It seems to have been posted on thew 24th - before people started mentioning the whole XAVC thing.

So I think it likely is...

The New sony camera is the F5 ($22-$25,000 range)! They are skipping the 4 model number and going to 5...They are aiming for the C300/500/Scarlet market with this.

Compression Schemes:
50 Mbps XDCam @ 422
80 Mbps XAVCHD @ 422
120 Mbps iframe compressed not XD Cam
220 Mbps "SR" @ 422 (only on new "SxS Raw+" Memory cards.... these are new!)
You can only record the full 4k frame with the R5 SR Recorder, otherwise you will record windowed footage.

120 frames per second in HD (1080), codec: XAVCHD
No on board 4K. Must use R5 recorder using a NEW type of memory card to record 4K and/or RAW.
R5 Recorder Suggested Price at the moment is $19,000! Not to mention the recording media. May change before the release.

There is also an F55 4K camera coming too, and that is what Sony is calling the direct competitor to the Epic. They think the Epic is way behind the F65...Seriously...

They will also be announcing a new set of lenses much better than their previous ones and at a t2.0 (set of 6 made by a famous lens company exclusively for Sony)...

That's all the info I have for now..

Yeah, who knows..
After he posted these specs they spread like wildfire across different forums and it seems he is the only source. He claims numerous times even after being politely challenged, that he was at a Sony hands-on demo and did not sign a NDA nor was he asked to.

We'll know in four days..

So who do you think has been out there shooting the product demo for Sony?
I hope they've given the prototypes to working professional DoPs and directors and not a bunch of bloggers and wannabes. Though, given the nature of this teaser campaign I'm not too hopeful...

I'm pretty sure Sony would make their people sign NDAs when they are building up this event so much. But anyway, it sounds pretty cool if he's kind of right. Hopefully the 4k recorder will come out for cheaper.

and it will be nice to shoot with a "F5" without a samurai attached - and if we get higher frame rates and hopefully more perceived resolution in the image i'll be super happy as well as the continually brilliance of s-log and hopefully a nice flat color matrix with natural skin tones and sony has a home run.

I still don't think many people in the c300/f3/scarlet crowd really actually utilize 4k beyond getting the perceived sharpness in the downconvert or the image stabilization that comes with it. Only those shooting for theatrical release will start to feel it. But hey man that's just my opinion.

I largely agree, though I've had three producers ask me recently if shooting 4K will mean they won't need a second camera on interviews because they will be able to punch-in on jump cuts. Also, the onset of affordable 4K projectors will mean lots of events in many sectors of the industry will start to demand 4K originated material.

Before we were even let into the conference room, we had to sign NDA's. Highly unlikely that someone would have been briefed without NDA. As far as who gets to use The NewF, Sony doesn't particularly want its demo reel created by "bloggers and wannabees".

As far as what the guy on Reduser says... if he is wrong, everybody gets a good laugh like the F54. If he is right and under NDA, he better get a good lawyer. And if he is right but not under NDA, he will be whisked away to some unspecified country where he will be persuaded under enhanced interrogation techniques to reveal his source. Hope he can hold is breath under water. And the whole thing will be shot in 4K at high frame rate.

Would that be to internal or external cards Ned?

:D

Just a wild guess... but lets say $25,000 including the recorder... that way they'll take out some of the wind from the release of the C500...

I'm real confused, for $25k you can have a camera that shoots 4K 16-bit RAW internally and HD to off-board recorder in any codec you like.

$20-$25k for camera + $$$ for ext. RAW or Sony codec recorder = FAIL.

NDA's are about worthless. Sony wouldn't want the bad press of suing someone who spoke about a product in which they invited people to. It's just marketing stuff that makes suits happy.

I quite like using RED... But it's not perfect, especially Scarlet.

What if you want s35 slow motion?
Built in XLRs? NDs?
Internal, broadcast ready 1080p?
Better low light?
Powered zoom lens? (did Sony ever release those?)
Worldwide customer service centres?
Easy to find accessories?

Even the Epic/F65 have flaws, depending on your usage.

Then go buy a Scarlet and quit s*%tting on a camera that hasn't even been F#cking released yet...

No camera is perfect for every shoot. On various jobs this year I've used seven different cameras. Usually chosen for a specific reason. More choice is good for all of us - though the rate these cameras are being announced it's getting tough to keep up!

So throwing that into the mix... lets say under $20,000... lower is always better...

If the specs posted on RedUser are accurate, and I'm guessing they are, it has to have a price-point lower than the C500 or it is DOA.

Nobody is s*%tting on anything, this is pure economic evaluation.

Do you think $20-$25k plus the cost of a 4k RAW recorder would compete well to a camera that can do it all internally for less cost? You do know the cost for Sony's SR-R4 4k RAW recorder currently sells for $16k + $5600 for 512GB 5.5Gbps media?

Please enlighten us.

I'm with you here Starcentral...I think for Sony to overshadow Scarlet and kick some butt they need internal 4k raw with an xdcam 1080 option (with the usual Nds, low light, xlrs, etc) for around 15-20k. A kit camera that can turn stuff around fast or switch over to high end raw. That would be huge.
