The New F

...or like many just use an external HD recorder ie. AJA, Atmos, PIX, Gemini, BlackMagic Shuttle, etc..

The issues with RED's implementation of recording the HD-SDI out via external stuff are:
1. Last time I checked, you couldn't write files in RedLogFilm while monitoring in RedGamma3. Maybe you can now?
2. Until recently, it added black bars and didn't give a full 1080p signal. So now if you're renting you have to specify a cam with specific firmware or update in the field.
3. You have to spec out more stuff when doing a rental. The rental house you like also might not stock the external recorder you like (versus if you ask for an Alexa or C300 or F3 you get that when you ask for the camera)
4. Slow motion workflow sucks (how do you record 120p?)
5. Greater bulk, more wires, more points of failure (and if you want HD files ready to go, chances are you're on a shoot that's not tolerant of this)

So that's why I say that it is an issue that Epic and Scarlet lack internal HD recording ability. And a $11,000 Meizler module that isn't out yet isn't a good fix.

To me, RED left out two important things people want (internal recording of edit-ready, fully-debayered HD files with selectable color space... and working audio with XLR).

If Sony includes those two in the camera, and moves external RAW recording to an outside module, it's pretty smart methinks.

My question now, is when is the release date of the camera?

It seems I'll be putting my beloved F3 package on the chopping block but I have shoots lined up where I need a camera, so I can't sell now anticipating the new camera 2-3 mos. from now.

Oh, and any speculation on what the new lenses will cost?

Yes i have the same dilemma so decided I would just rent an F3 as needed, own a 4k RAW camera in the meantime and suffer through lack of built-in ND's, no XLR, noisy high ISO images, then see where the road takes me next year.

I only heard it will ship next year, but it could be a very long year indeed.

About a month ago there was a lot of buzz about an F3 firmware update which was supposed to be "imminent" but this has all gotten quiet since the new "F" thing started. I wonder if there is some connection, might the new firmware for the F3 have some features or compatibility with the new camera? Maybe the F3 will also support the new codec being discussed?

Cultural. Almost every time I see a Japanese ENG shooter walking around (not entirely rare in Los Angeles), they carry their camera using the strap.

I've recognized that as well. I just think at a Cinealta level it shouldn't have consumer look. At least lose the hand strap that screams Handycam.

Funny...Jannard claims the October 31st Epic price drop is due to production efficiencies. Uh huh.
That announcement is then followed by 19 pages of slavish devotion and gratitude by the faithful.

That whole RED thing still freaks me out a little.

Yeah, they are talking about 'transparency' while being quite the opposite (if they were being transparent they would release the info on how much the camera is being reduced by now, as reflected in the savings made by the production efficiencies). But instead they will wait until the price of the New-F is released before saying how much the Epic will be reduced by.

Still, no other company out there reacts as quickly to the market as Red does, so credit where credit is due. It will take Canon a year or two to register what happened and react to it.

Cheaper Epics will be better for everyone in the end (except for rental houses - they are going to be pissed to see their stock devalue overnight).

That's true, but RED is a privately held company owned by one guy who happens to have billions of dollars. He can do pretty much whatever he wants, including making less money or heck, even no money. Whereas the other companies must consider things very carefully before doing something because a business misstep could have consequences for tens of thousands of employees (and anger shareholders).

Jannard definitely loves the game of showmanship. Remember last November when he made the Scarlet announcement just hours after Canon's Hollywood event?! The only thing is, RED takes much longer to develop shipping products than the other companies, so RED's only bullets in this game (for now) is price. But if they keep using those bullets, it'll just be a race to the bottom and they're not going to look like a premium brand.
