Im hating it because every time I see a new post Im hoping it's legit new info/specs. I should prob just not even look at this thread till the 30th since it doesnt look like Ned is going to crack. The mock-up and features are pretty damn funny though.

There might be some legit news in my converstions on twiiter after the F54K ad I posted found itself all over the web this morning.

Read into it however you want.

Consumer 4K delivery? I doubt there will be a Green-Ray or 4K-Ray. So that leaves delivery by our friends like Comcast and Time Warner. They still can't manage 1080. 4K streaming? I'll be in a nursing home or dead by then and won't be able to see it anyway.

Consumer 4K delivery will largely be based on upcoming H.265 HEVC codec, which is designed largely for 4K & 8K resolutions. Basically, this codec will offer the same quality for half the bitrate.

With HEVC, 4K at 30fps will only need around 25Mbit/s and 8K will need around 90Mbit/s. What it means is that, with HEVC, 4K would fit onto Blu-ray disks (though obviously it would require completely different hardware to play it back). Even without HEVC, 4K Blu-ray is possible. 8K would even be possible with HEVC with the multi-layered Blu-ray disks.

Either way, any real 4K adoption is many years away, and who knows what kind of incredible camera will be available by then.

For Sony, I think they will push for 4K, as they want to push 4K devices on consumers. They obviously need 4K content to push 4K consumer electronics. Sony has pretty much done everything it needs to with 1080p with their existing F3 (and FS700), the next F-cam moving to 4K seems like the logical choice. Unless they want to make something beyond the current F65 (which has a 20MP 8k-ish sensor), something to fit between the F3 & F65 seems the most likely. Though if they plan on going above the F65 (which I doubt) than a 33MP 8K would make sense. Regardless, I would expect a S35 sensor over a FF35 as there are a great many availability of quality PL lenses.

I'm so sick of this resolution race, how about worrying about extending the bit-depth dynamic range and colour gamut of standard TV gamma instead? 1080p looks fantastic in a living room, even on really big screens - so we've got plenty of resolution for display purposes, give us additional colour information and DR instead, it'd make the experience so much better than 4K can.

Sony did not comment on ship dates in response to questions. I just might add cynically that it could very well be before shipments of the Blackmagic Camera.

I'm thinking this means we'll see a minimum of 120fps at 1080p constant, perhaps with much higher buffer fps rates.

If Sony offers me a $25k camera that uses SxS with internal 50Mbps 4:2:2 XDCAM HD, and external 4k, I'm probably sold. The problem I've always had with RED is that it wasn't flexible for fast turn around tight budget projects.
