The New F

F4... 4 is bad luck in Japanese so i don't think so..

Japanese are not that superficial as the rest of the world think they are... Remember Nikon F4? No bad luck there, camera ruled the field for long time...

About "new F"? I hate this guessing game! They should either put up or shut up! This is getting boring...

Could also be a recorder+update which updates ALL sony F cameras. Perhaps bringing them all into 4k territory.

Step back and think it through. Twitter tease came from CineAlta. F is a camera designation. F3 sensor is not a 4K sensor. Therefore not very likely that it is a recorder. F3 is limited to what it is by its chipset. By elimination then...

I would guess new model, F5, which is a "baby F65" priced to replace the F3 that has 4K+ sensor and improved ergonomics.

Alister Chapman says you can't upgrade the XDCAM codec in the F3, so no update will ever make the F3 4k.

A 4k F3 version would hinder the F65 market which is a camera selling for $85k plus extra for the 12-bit option. So if Sony does in fact release a 4k camera you can expect it to be about $10k more than the F3 and leave off enough features to still keep the F65 attractive.

F3 is still a viable camera for some time to come. Sony will not be discontiuing it now and firmware development will continue.

Dont fret about buying one. Make great pictures and enjoy!

I believe the F65 also has an 8K sensor. Perhaps the new F camera will only have a 4K sensor like the FS700.

ok, then a new model, more expensive than the F3 but way less than the F65 with new features that could be tempting...

That'd be right, I buy an F3, it hasn't even arrived yet - and it's replacement goes and rears it's ugly mug!

If I were Sony, I'd use something like internal 10-bit ProRes/DNxHD recording (without including RAW) to delineate between an F3 replacement and the F65. That'd make for a perfect mid-tier camera IMO.

A $10k price point would be strange though given the FS700's pricing.

Maybe the announcement is not the recorder, but the FS700 4k upgrade itself!

The part number will be: FU-C500-THE-FS700-NOW-4k-For-Way-Less

So you went for it? Good call.

The gorgeous images you can get out of an SLOGged F3, aren't going to get any less gorgeous anytime soon.

Yup, got tired of waiting it out for the BMC. Which might make a good B-cam sometime next year.
They are about ready to implode over at BMCuser though.

Let's fill in the blanks....

FS100 $4199 HD (AVCHD)
FS700 $7990 HD,4k (AVCHD) + 4k upgrade cost
F3 $13,900 HD (XDCAM 8-bit, 10-bit SLOG RGB:444)
F# $__,___ HD,4k (Codec:____? , Bit-depth_____?)
F65 $85,000 8k/4k (SR codec 10-bit, 12-bit option, RGB:444)

^ and what's missing here is the 4k recorder with 3G link

I have been really expecting this "New F"...

Also I placed my bet on early May this year... Here's the link:

Sony must put or announce a new 4K raw output camera soon and before the Canon C500 hits the shelves...

And I believe it is more than just a rumor...

There's a post dated 2011-7-27 from someone in the Far East that I coincidentally found, which it textually says the following (translated from Chinese, simplified Han):

Sony PMW-F5

Today had no intention to see such a news at other forum...
PMW-F3 is the SONY exploratory Super-35mm handheld product. 2012--In 2013, in the SONY plan, will have one to use the new development:
8,192 x 2,160 (1,770 ten thousand picture elements), 24.3 x 12.8mm sensor, under 12Bit, entire picture element output: 120fps.
When entire picture element 120fps, the sensor power loss is ultra low 3W. Sensitivity superelevation, when 120fps, achieves astonishingly 77.6dB [reference: The RED-Epic sensor sensitivity is: 66dB]. Brand-new handheld product.

Is approximately same as the F65 signal processing mode, 8,192 x 2,160 (1,770 ten thousand picture elements) picture element sampling, lowers standards 4K (8.85 million) signal record without F65 16Bit, changes the output: 12Bit S-Log signal. Moreover will release that coordinates with it: uses the SR-Memory supervelocity card the SR-R2 record unit.

Inter BEE which holds in November Japan 2011 will have the primary form computer display most quickly.

Something to consider and think about...

I hope this New F to be a reality, not just a wish for many of us.

Cheers.
