And of course, there is more to a camera than dynamic range.... just that dynamic range seems to be one of the more noticeable and important ones![]()
I agree that DR is important.
But I do feel the elephant in the room with all these +/- 6 stop tests is that while they might be good to show the differences at the extreme end of the spectrum, I've never (well, with very few exceptions) ended up with an image looking like anything but the +3 faces or better. And this is since shooting with the 5D mkII basically...
Of course, cameras with limited DR then show their warts in the shadows/highlights, but that's not nearly as drastic as, let's say, a blown out face like we see here. I think subconsciously we expect highlights to become very bright—but a face? Not so much. That is not to say that beautiful highlights isn't a thing.
But: just shoot the normal exposure with all these cameras and look at that in various lights. Are some of the shots hard to tell apart in a blind test then? Well, that's reality catching up right there. Even so, there might be a bunch of reasons to choose one camera system instead of another, but in terms of IQ comparisons, that's the one that counts.
The shootout Teddy_Dem links to above is OK I think (my focus is on the exterior scenes).
