C300: The New Canon C300 Mark III and New 25 - 250mm Zoom Lens

Speaking of lenses, I just won a set of six CN-e primes on Ebay for $12k, $2k per lens, comes with case. Described by DP as fantastic condition and they'd never rented them out.

Three of my CN-e zoom lenses I've bought I've paid close to half the price of new when buying used (only the 18-80 did I buy new and that's already gone down in price a good amount), and they've all functioned perfectly. So much money saved by buying used. Especially with the compact zooms which just dropped in price around 60%. Goodness I'm glad I didn't buy those new at full price.

Lotsa great deals on eBay. A few months ago, I picked up a Vinten 250 in incredible condition (lived in a studio) for about 1/3rd it’s new price. And it came with a “mini pedestal”, essentially for free(didn’t need it, but it was part of the package for the same price that just heads were selling for). About $15k worth of gear for $3k. And if I wanted, I could sell the pedestal and recoup a lot of, or possibly all of the money, essentially netting me a free $9K tripod head.

Reminds me of the Hollywood Microdolly I bought which came with a Microdolly jib. I mainly wanted the dolly. The dolly new was around $3300 with accessories, the jib and accessories new was around $5k, so $8300 worth of gear I got on Ebay for $2500. Still, considering I mainly wanted just the Dolly, paying $2500 for a $3300 dolly wasn't actually that great of a deal. So, I ended up trying the jib at home and hated it and it's design, and never used it on a shoot. A couple years after I bought it, I put the jib on Ebay for $2k as a Buy It Now, where it sat for a couple years. After one year I got an offer for $1k and did not accept, and after two years I got an offer for I think $1800 and accepted that. So now, the dolly was just around $700 after having sold the jib. Good deal afterall. Just took a few years.

I actually had a friend want to buy the ped earlier this year(never discussed price), but I wanted to hang onto it until after the election, because last time around we did a lot of live stuff for some of the news/political nets with teleprompter and this would be a good set-up for that. Now I’m wondering if I should have gone ahead and tried to sell it, then... I mean that would all just be icing on the cake, but that’s usually the best part.

Sometimes completed/sold listings take days to update (some don't show up for whatever reason, or at least easily).

The thing about Eric is you never know when he's serious...so the first question to ask would be...if he was serious.

You guys need to look on eBarri, the exclusive site for Alexa owners with condescending attitudes. Just kidding Eric I always look forward to your posts.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but to me, this is the first video that really shows the C300 III shine...

The footage really does look a notch above to me. Still looks really Canon, but rent some Cooke S4s and baby you got a stew cookin'.

I have been speaking with the shooter that shot this over on the Newshooter forums, and all he did was apply some post saturation and contrast. No LUTs or anything. And more importantly, no post sharpening. The C200 and C300 II are just a tad soft to me since they do not employ any downsampling and shoot their 4k with a 4k sensor. I was wondering how sharp the C300 III was going to be since it also using a 4k sensor. But that footage looks tack sharp to me.

I was very curious about his footage...he did a similar post with the C500 Mark II and I found it insightful before I made that purchase. In this case I was particularly interested in his statement about the forest DR (detail in the shadow side of the trees), as I shot a series of similar shots some months back with the C500II. I downloaded his CRM files and from what I can tell (apples to apples...or Fuji to Gala) the noise levels are quite similar to the C500II in the deepest shadows (I'd say the C500 has a little more color noise, and the noise looks finer, the C300 almost looks like it's been filtered a little, and is mostly luma noise, and of course the C500II is more detailed being 6k). But the fact that the noise levels are on Par with the C500, I think that's a win for the C3003 as it represents a very significant move forward for S35 from Canon.

I had these concerns too and was a bit disappointed as there was no oversampling in the new C300iii sensor. I switched from a 4K FS7 to an 5,7K EVA1 and the difference in image sharpness is huge

It is a shame its not a 6k sensor. That being said, the Alexa mini is only a 4k sensor and that's the most widely used camera on bigger productions. If its done right you won't miss it and looking at the test footage from the C300III, I'd say they've nailed it.

Frankly...I think given the improved noise profile, no body's going to miss 6k on this camera. If you do, they have that other camera.

The comment was about oversampling, not capturing...some would like 4K from 6K, 8K sensors.

I too don't think it will be an issue. Footage looks nice.

It's my understanding that the use of the 2nd pixel to get the added DR is somewhat "oversamplingish" which would explain why the C300 III, I believe, has more real detail than say a C200.

I wouldn't say there is "no" oversampling.

You're just getting it in a non traditional way.

I thought is the same pixel with 2 readouts.

The standard Alexa Mini isn't even a 4k sensor. It's a 3.2k sensor and Arri achieves 4k by upscaling it in-camera. I think the whole down sampling thing is over hyped a bit and the Alexa is the proof. Yes, it can help with sharpness to some degree, but there are many ways to achieve sharpness in a camera. That footage of the C300 III looks sharp as a tack to me. In fact, I probably wouldn't want anymore sharpness than what I see in that sample video.
