C300: The New Canon C300 Mark III and New 25 - 250mm Zoom Lens

My initial response is... Sweet. Combo with that lens should fly off shelves .... in normal times. I will certainly read into all specs more...

As a former owner of several C500PL and C300Mk2, good to see Canon finally got the initial pricing right first time around.

The specs are what we all expect in 2020, and the dual pixel exposure is a HUGE boost to the camera- unexpected and something really worth trying.

I'm skeptical of claim of 16 stops of DR... but even if it gives *true* 14 or 14.5 stops....with really good AF & multiple codecs... this could be a real winner... and agree about the dual pixel exposure...

Well C300 is 'famous' for doc

true zoom lenses (starting a 16/17 S35 or 24 FF) are far too massive in FF, I guess in FF infrastructure just gets too big for doc.

Yep. That's why the camera is 10k and not 16k.

Personally this feature set is exactly what I have wanted from a camera for years. Dual pixel auto focus @ 120/4k is a game changer.

The timing is odd. Is anyone planning on making a camera purchase anytime soon?

Is there any business reason to wait to announce the camera? I saw this same comment about the DJI drone and I was a bit confused about the rational. In all seriousness, is there an argument to be made for waiting to release new technology that has been developed?

That lens would be perfect if it covered FF - it’s not much good on S35 as 25 is not wide

There is no "perfect" lens - just as there is no "perfect" camera... there are always compromises somewhere... agree that 25 is not wide enough... but add something like 12-24 lens to your kit... and now you have 2 lenses that cover a very broad range in s35.
While I love wide lenses - I would think most "doc" work would prefer the extra reach with the built in 1.5 extender.

Looks like a fantastic camera, and if I were in the market for a camera in that price range, this would probably be at the top of the list.

Well of course each lens has a place. And non is perfect for everything. BUt this is not a camera and lens purchase for most.

For example 25-250 could be most excellent at a conference or drama play but not as a single lens for doc.

Most actuality involves popping from showing the scene to popping in for close ups making swapping to a 12-24 impractical

the 17-120, is good the 17-120 with a built in extender could be most excellent

a 25-250 on a FF camera could also be very excellent

2/3rd 4.5 and 4.7 zooms are also most excellent.

even the 18-80 is good and can be cheaply paired with a 70-200 for under 1/2 the price of that single lens

The other thread shows canons other 'imperfect' ranges have just have a$15,000 price drop, which does not say they were fyling off the shelves!

Good discussion. A couple thoughts:

Glad the base camera does have two XLR audio inputs and supports 24/48 audio (remember there was talk that perhaps XLR audio would only be available on the extension unit).

If the 25-250 doesn't do it for you, it looks like the Canon CN-E 30-105mm T2.8 and Canon CN-E 15.5-47mm T2.8 have dropped in price by $13,000USD each to now $10,000 each. That's pretty cool.

Also, specs, pix, brochures, and some launch videos are now on the Canon USA website (and I'd guess at other Canon sites around the world):

EOS C300 Mark III Digital Cinema Camera

But this one picture; perhaps I'm missing something, but doesn't it look like that battery is just waiting to be torn off in the midst of use? Not an issue if using V-Mounts or whatever, but jeepers that looks nonoptimal.

To me those two lenses would be useless. Its also not clear that the function with AF.

The best I can see (excluding the Cn17 or 18-80) is the Canon 17-85mm F4-5.6 IS USM which looks terrible! :)
As it happens I love the 70-200F4

THat batt is the same as the C500 - its a 60wh - you can get a 30 w/hr that is flush with the body (lasts 15mins?) or an extension with Vlock.

Yes, I agree. I do a ton of run n' gun and FF would be a disaster for me. But what is in vogue (FF) and what people actually need are sometimes at odds...

Most of my work was run n' gun and FF was no different than S35 with proper AF. If you want less shallow DOF, you can stop down and crank up the ISO, which is clean in most modern cameras up to 10,000 and should be enough for 99% of situations. Any difference in body size or lenses was negligible.

The battery does look like it sticks out a bit further than on the C300s.

From what I have heard, the C500 eats up batteries, so I would imagine the C300 Mk3 would be very similar. The C300 Mk2 can run for 3/4 hours off one of those BP-A60s. Not exactly sure on the run time, but they last a really long time.

The C300 III looks very good to me. High frame rates at last. Smart to align the products to share accessories. I dumped all of my money into an Arri MILF though so, no go for the time being.

The 25-250 sounds amazing. It feels like a large sensor equivalent to a 2/3" broadcast lens almost. 25mm is definitely wide enough IMO. If you need wider then you're in a space that's too tight for 250mm probably... also the 17-120mm already exists.

Compare it to the competition... chart from Newshooter
