C200: The new Canon C200 with 4K

Also we forgot to mention the possibility of using a dummy card to shoot raw onto ssds. The CFAST door is removable so I foresee a 3D printed version with a cut out for a wire shortly after its release.

I mentioned similar option few days ago.

Whenever my clients ask me to do something I tell them "NO" too. Then I slap them around to show them who's really boss.

See, that's what I mean. The 1DX II has the amazing DPAF tracking autofocus, and all I have to do to change what object to track is touch the object on the screen once. Dead simple. Why did they add the extra step on the C200 in order to change the tracking object?!

From my little experience of shooting on the 80D, there are situation when I want the tracking focus to start, or stop, in a middle of a shot. The 2 buttons (actually, 1 button + touch screen) seems to have a benefit in such situations.

There is a pause button on the 80D...it does not get any simpler than that.

Canon really got everything right with their DSLRs' touchscreens, but the C200 isn't designed the same way, so some functionality might just have to be different.

They should make that an OPTIONAL feature. The ability to switch tracking from one object to another with just one tap of the touchscreen is wonderful. I can see where the ability to stop tracking mid-shot could come in handy as well. Just give the user the choice. It works brilliantly on the 1DX II and the 80D.

And the 5D Mark IV!...that camera has the most functionality in the touchscreen; even more than the 1DX Mark II.

And now with C-Log...it's a little powerhouse. I just love this camera for what it does all-around.

So based on the output configuration chart, it looks like you can record 8-bit 4K internally to the SD cards, while at the same outputting HD 422 10 bit via the SDI at all frame rates? But the HDMI looks like it changes between HD and 4K depending on how you're recording internally?

Is that right? The chart is confusing. And if it is, what the easiest, most compact way to record HD 10-bit via the SDI?

You would have to take my word for it, but I can tell you that didn't happen.

And honestly, what editor in their right mind would actually do that, especially for broadcast?

I'll take your word for it, I have no reason not to trust you. But to your second point, this happens ALL the frickin time!
It's so frustrating as a DP to have to deal with this.

Blackmagic Video Assist 5" and the Video Devices Pix-E5 are also great choices that do both sdi and hdmi. The Blackmagic only records 1080 like the Atomos, but the Pix-E5 will record the 4K over hdmi (but is 3x the price).

Yup, Samurai is SDI only and Ninja is HDMI only. Personally, I wouldn't be buying a 1080 recorder at the moment if you are shooting with a 4K camera. I keep going over the entire Atomos line and it becomes quite easy to talk yourself up to the top of the line Shogun Inferno if you are a working DP as it has all of the SDI inputs and can record 4K 60P. I was considering the Ninja Inferno but being HDMI only, it's a lousy investment. You can also buy down to the Ninja Flame but then you are at HDMI only and 4K 30p only. If you do not freelance DP with different cameras like I do, the Ninja Inferno would be fine if all you will ever use it with is your C200.

That actually brings up a good question for C300 MKII owners. Can you record externally with the trigger on the C300 MKII to the Atomos recorders if you are only rolling on proxy on the C300 MKII or would have to have a couple of CFast cards in the slots on the C300 MKII rolling too? I've only shot with CFast cards on the C300 MKII, never with an Atomos or CD recorder.

SHAPE is rolling out with some accessories...

Gotta be honest, nothing in that video excites me. It all looks like stuff to just move the touchscreen monitor and mic mount out further or replace the handle. I've already got the Zacuto VCT Pro baseplate, a lens support, Tilta Arri Rosette extension for the grip, Wooden Arri rosette to 15mm rod piece. I like Shape stuff but it doesn't seem any better or worse than Zacuto or Wooden.

Well, honestly, the vast majority of what I shoot with my F55 is 1080, still.

Wow, I will shoot the exact opposite, I doubt I will ever shoot 1080 other than for high frame rates. I am in a few months on a documentary and it's killing me that so far, everything we have shot short of Go Pro and drone has been 1080. The remainder over the next year or two will be 4K, I have to figure out what to do with the very nice 1080 we have shot in a 4K timeline, 1080 blown up to 4K doesn't look so great, may have to come up with with some sort of graphic or idea where I don't have to blow up 1080 full screen.

But why shoot 1080 with a nice 4k camera?

Because I have to TRY and match it with my other non - 4K cameras. My iPhone has 4K, a GH5, 5D4 has it, and most other new cameras. To tell you the truth Im more interested in color grading than 4K. I'm somehow gonna get down on my hands and knees and praise Canon for putting 4K in a top of the line cinema camera that costs $7500??? A guy just offered me a 5 month old C300 mkii for $7500. With an almost the same burdensome work flow for 4K raw as the C300 MKII...... what is the appeal of the C200 besides a slightly better touch screen which I've never used anyway, and if God forbid you do use it you are a classified amateur, and who needs that!

The C200 is a bit lighter. It has built in XLR and digital audio so the monitor unit is a bit lighter. It has built in wifi in case you want to control it with an ipad. It has low bit rate 4K which I actually think would be a nice option but I appear to be the only person. It uses cheap SD cards rather than CFast for 4K. And RAW Lite. And 4K 60p and non cropped 120p.

I know it has a ton of appealing things. I have WIFI with the C100 mkii. Personally, and I know I'm the exception to the rule, but I never use the XLR's, I do like the fact they are in the camera, but that isn't gonna seal the deal for me. The C300 use's C-fast cards too, and can fit much more data on them. Yes, and better slo-mo. The one killer for me is it doesn't have 10 bit 422. I need that for color grading.

I hear you. I'm not much of an accessories guy, but I know the stuff can be useful...but too much money IMO no matter how much precision went into making it. I did have a SHAPE cage for a BMCC once and I liked the adjustable push-lock handle.

Yeah, I'm just thinking it is worth mentioning what it is that people think makes the C200 better than the C300 II. A used C300 II costs the same as a C200, so it is basically a matter of comparing the specs that you need if you plan on buying a Canon camera in 2017. I bought a C300 II right before the C200 was announced and I don't regret my decision.
