C200: The new Canon C200 with 4K

I believe you!

Actually many guys (or gals) who work at camera stores that supply Canon products already know the specs. (Regarding normal people.)

Not saying you work at one, but tons of other people already know about this camera and most of them don't hang out on forums or even know that there are people out there like us who speculate on a camera's offerings, lol.

#NERDS

The Panasonic is no slouch for performance. But the C200 will indeed surprise everyone. You'll find out within a few days.

...If the C200 does too much at a low price it will kill off C300 Mk2 sales, unless Canon is contemplating a C300 Mk3 release to go with it.

CFast and SD cards? Sounds fantastic to me! I hope they price it right, because I'm really liking what I'm seeing right now. And it better have touchscreen autofocus!

If they do include 4K/60p in this camera (MJPEG 800Mbps via CFast), it could be a good reason Canon didn't announce C-Log for the 1DX Mark II (and only the 5D Mark IV).

So it's like if you want 4K/60p with C-Log...it's 'C200' or nothing. (Or C700...but no one's buying that camera.)

Right, forgot about those. Fortunately I rarely shoot multi-cam so those really aren't a deal breaker for me. 12 bit 4/4/4 is nice, I like shooting it but once again, for our clients and projects, it doesn't matter. They want 4K, Canon colorimetry, a flattering, sharp image, good sound. They really generally don't even care about 10-bit vs. 8-bit although I shoot with the Ninja Blade recording 10-bit for them but it's still mostly from the 8-bit C100/C300. RAW is not in my world. IMHO, nobody needs to shoot RAW unless it is a narrative project and they have the budget or if you are shooting something with a lot of compositing. I really think a lot of misinformed people shoot RAW who really have no need for it, because it is "the best". If I was a great colorist/grader/compositer, I might apprecaite the RAW workflow but from a DP POV, complete PITA.

Sony did well in striking a balance of features that prevented the Fs5 from cannibalizing the Fs7. That isn't any easy thing to pull off. The C200 will counter the sales of the Fs5 but, as you note, risks eating into the C300 since the C300 has no shoulder-mount form-factor advantage over the C200 and may actually have a worse form factor in that it has the audio controls married to the LCD. Canon is still left with the problem of not having a shoulder-mounted camera with a fully orientable loupe that can compete in price with the Fs7.

If you want a shoulder-mount Canon you either bastardize a C100/200/300 into what it was never meant to be or you shell out upwards of $30k for the C700.

A while ago I voiced an idea that maybe Canon has decided to get rid of C100, C300 and C500 to make their lineup C200/C400/C700. We'll see.

Or C300 MKIII, with 60p and some other bandied about/demanded enhancements that shouldn't be too difficult to add onto MKII.

BTW, C200 has been rumored for whole three years!

PS. I am sure Noel knows everything about the Panasonic camera (but is held back by his NDA).

I actually would be most interested in the camera if it had a 100mbps 4K. Right now Canon doesn't offer a lower bit rate 4K camera. Canon is lacking an option for those clients that "know" they want 4K but otherwise want a C100 workflow with SD cards and minimal hard drive space.

You never know, it would be super cool to have the 305Mbps or 410 Mbps option with the Cfast and 100 Mbps with the SDXC cards, wouldnt it? Like you would have the real deal and the "lite" version for non-critical projects. That would be a real product differentiator.

There you go again... speculating about Noel's refusal to speculate!

(I'll see you on the Dark Side Of The 200...)

Or, C200.1 A Speculation Odyssey...

I mean the reason for MJPEG is that the 1DX II and 5D IV have great jpeg processors, but not the same DV processors that the cinema line has. It's a good codec for image quality, but a terrible one for workflow, so they'd never use it on a proper C camera.

Anyone have a read on the timing of the announcement today? If indeed it is today. Or, perhaps perhaps, a live stream?

Since they've slapped the red badge on a 1DC (MJPEG) and called it a cinema camera, I'll believe anything is possible, ha.

This is somewhat exciting but Canon has a tendency to be a tad bit expensive in the beginning. Honestly, I just want 4K in my C100 MKII. The only other featured I'd love would be extra stabilization in body. I don't imagine the C200 will be under $7,000 and that means it's a couple years off for me until the price drop happens. Love my C100 MKII...I only wish I had the ability to acquire in 4K with it, 4K24 would be just fine. Everything else I can live with without issue.

I'm in the exact same boat. I just want 4K on my C100, but I also want touchscreen autofocus.

No worries, it will Definitely be UNDER $7,000!!!

Uh, no. That didn't happen.

Depends on what you mean by "presented," I'm guessing. Back when I was a magazine editor and even now sometimes, I would be led to off-the-floor or out-of-the-building rooms to be shown upcoming unannounced equipment in "whisper rooms" under NDA. So I'd guess Canon showed the C200 to plenty of people last month, but those people are keeping their mouth shut.

And the current "leaked" pictures could very well have been leaked by Canon to generate a little pre-Cinegear buzz. That's fine. It's working...

Maybe for fun Panasonic will do the same thing before the show. (a hint. :-) )

That's the next can of worms. How many people are under the NDA and how many of them tell their friends, "I am under the NDA, so don't tell anyone what I am about to tell you".

I mean, it's not as if anyone is leaking secret info these days.
