C200: The new Canon C200 with 4K

As usual, nobody gives a crap about audio except me and all of the sound mixers. This pup has AES/EBU DIGITAL FREAKING AUDIO INPUTS! How cool is that?

I actually noticed last night when I saw the pics and it really caught my eye. The only camera I have that can do that is my F55. I've never taken advantage of/used it myself, but one of my audio guys did a shoot with my SD664 and an F5 and sent multiple split tracks(4?)to an F5 via AES/EBU.

Every company provides firmware updates down the road for one reason or another.

To sell cameras. Today.

Somehow BMD managed to do a major hardware redesign of the UrsaMini 4.6 Pro in a similar time frame.

Sony was a lonely player with the F35 for cinema, then they lost it almost completely to Arri (Alexa) and Red. BMD is coming on full throttle at the low end of the market. Why Canon moves at a snail's pace with updates I know not, though highly suspect corporate insularity. The success/failure (profit/ market share) of their product will decide if they are right or wrong.

C200 & C300 Mark II have the same DC Port

C200 & C300 Mark II have the same DC Port

Yes, the DC port on the C300 Mark II and the C200 are the same. You should be able to recycyle your AB battery accessories.

"Is the DC In port the same as C300 Mk2? I use an AB batt to power camera (onboard batt used as backup and hot swap power) and mostly accessories."

From a C300 Mk2 owner...

For Terry and other dealers-
Any word if that touch screen will work with the C300 Mk2 after a firmware update?

Will Canon enable 120 fps full sensor in C300 M2 after a firmware update?

Will the C300 Mk2 get internal RAW lite?

For those who haven't tried it- autofocus + face detection + tracking (when you have enough light and a clear view of a face) is a game changer with the 18-80 and 70-200/2.8. It works amazing well on many, but not all shots. The hardest part about it was learning to trust the camera.

Body mounted XLRs- about time Canon.

Ergo wise, to me, the C200 is a big jump ahead vs the C300 Mk2. C200 looks like a natural B cam to the C300 Mk2. If Canon enables external RAW output, then a B cam to the C700. Workflow will be an issue and an extra step to get the better codec- but not impossible. RAW output would be better- opens up the option for external recorders that can take Canon RAW and record to ProRes or DNxHR.

If I were in the market for a camera in the upcoming months I'd choose the C200 over the C300 Mk2 for several reasons:
-touch screen focus
-it's cheaper (every dollar counts)
-many clients are not specific about codec delivery. For quick turnaround I don't shoot log- I have my own custom profiles for WYSIWYG shooting.
-could use hdmi recorder for different codecs- though hdmi should be banned from pro oriented gear.
-can transcode RAW lite when needed.
-120 fps full sensor
-superior ergonomics.
-it's cheaper- I only want to own gear that makes money. The cheaper the better. Higher quality gear can, and will be rented.

For me, work destined for solely online distribution is becoming the norm. Some features I've shot have ended up on HBO and Netflix- and for the acquired shows I don't think they really care about the originating codec (as opposed to original programming.) Comes down to client requirements. If the client requires 10 or 12 bit 422 or 444 and fast turnaround, then the C200 is a non starter this year. If the client only requires nice images in HD or UHD, and after testing the C200 looks good, then it's a great choice.

Because no matter what else- if the footage is out of focus or too soft- you're doing another take. With producers very quick to eliminate qualified focus pullers these days- working autofocus is huge.

Exactly my thoughts , good post Kik

As a RED Epic Dragon owner frustrated with the structure and costs of being able to upgrade, hell even transition into DSMC 2 to be able to use the smaller lighter gear and new accessories Im jumping ship over to this. Well played Canon. Not to mention the size and built in ND's.

Is it definitive that the future firmare update with the XF-AVC codec is gong to be 8bit only. Has anyone heard of the possibility of it being 10 bit when they release it? Or does it mean that a further firmware update can be implemented that makes it 10 bit because the cam is 10 bit ready already. Newshooter said this:

"Interestingly, Canon also plan to add the XF-AVC codec from the C300 MkII at a later date – currently planned for the first half of 2018. Apparently the delay is due to the complexity of re-engineering a 10bit codec to play nicely in 8bit."

No word other than Canon is working on making it 8bit. I cant see them not releasing it as 4:2:2 8bit. I know it's Canon but dang the MP4 codec is already 4:2:0 8bit.

I posted this on a similar N&A thread.

On the C300Mk2 you need to close the cFast door. I suppose you could "file" a hole and void your warranty at the same time. On the UM4.6K the cFast cards are out in the open- no door to close.

No, the EVF on the C200 is permanently attached.

The C200B has no option for the EVF.

Terry, any word if the touch LCD may be an option on the C300 Mk2? (after firmware update)
I like the C200 more WITHOUT the EVF. Better ergo for me.

Very well said on all counts. As a c300 mk ii owner, this echoes a lot of my sentiments and experience. Thanks for sharing this thoughtful post.

I've not yet learned to completely trust the autofocus on set, but I will continue to try/test. I'd definitely buy another monitor for the c300 mkii if it had touchscreen DPAF capability. Strikes me as unlikely but hey who knows.

Also admit I'd really like an internal RAW update in the firmware. That said, in my experience, the 4k 10 bit XF-AVC stands up to some robust grading sitting in the color suite with someone who knows what their doing.

4K 60p, at the very least as an output to an external recorder, would be great but I'm not holding my breath.

As it's become more common practice for manufacturers to increase specs through firmware - impressive continuous development of the Sony F5, F55 - Red Scarlet W getting 4K Prores update with no additional charge, many other examples, etc - hopefully Canon sees that this type of service actually keeps customers in an ecosystem much longer and provides a competitive advantage.
