C200: The new Canon C200 with 4K

I'm sure most of you read it, but this is what Newsshooter added about the 2018 XF-AVC firmware update:

"Apparently the delay is due to the complexity of re-engineering a 10bit codec to play nicely in 8bit. So possibly it’s not going to offer a dramatic increase in quality of footage when it arrives. But there is a roadmap, it’s planned as a free update, and once implemented it means footage from the C200 should fit nicely within a C300 Mk II workflow."

Yeah, it's hard to get excited about 8-bit XF-AVC

Looks like Canon have given up competing with Sony, and instead are trying to fill the hands of all those people still waiting for their Red Ravens!

Coincidentally, a stripped down C200 ($5,999) is the same price a RED Raven was at launch ($5,995).

No comparison in final price though because RED accessories vastly increase costs for that body...and the camera is also now $8,950 anyway (after a price increase).

Positives for me are:
C700 sensor! Bonus.
Dual Pixel AF - Canon has the best implementation going around. If you want it. It's in this camera.
4K 50/60P!
Redesign. Seems they've listened to their user base over the years and conversely not so much to their non users who don't like the form factor.
Internal 4K raw, but see additional note below.

Negatives for me are:
It has a high end RAW "LIGHT" which shoots to CFAST which I think will be a little restrictive for buyers at this camera price point. Lets see, if a grab a handful from BHPhoto today 5x $674.95 enough for ongoing shooting with offloading, about $3,300. Hmm but I don't want to record every job raw so theres another $1500 in cards. Nearly 5K in cards later... Then there's the additional storage required if I want to offload and back up which I will most certainly need to do. At the other end, (and Im skipping ahead in time past the current internal Long GOP codec) the internal recording which I see most footage being shot on this camera, will deliver a 4K 4:2:2 8bit internally. Can I use SDI for 10 bit? Nope, it's only 8 bit as well. So I have RAW or 8 bit? There seems to me to be a big hole there.

EF mount or ship to service centre for PL swap. Little painful, but becoming pretty much a non issue with more an more lenses being released in dual mount as well.

I just don't fully understand why they opted for RAW and just not have a a full 4K 10Bit out plus internal 4K 10bit. Seems to me that sensor would deliver great 4k images at 10bit 422 to their Log files. The original C300 delivered fantastic images in 1080 at 8 bit, well beyond my expectations for the time. 4K is a different kettle of fish. I will try one out for myself though before making a complete judgement call on that.

As an event shooter I don't mind the codec, but what people fail to realise is that cfast cards will eventually go down in price, which makes this camera future proof more so than most. If you have something shooting Raw with that amazing dpaf and touchscreen, for that price, then I think it really is an amazing deal. I think for a large majority of people it is the camera we asked for and more.
Having dpaf frees up the creative process so much more and is worth its weight in gold.

If the hdmi output is 10bit??? then it would be great if atomos could bring out a ninjablade 5" recorder that records proress 4k 60p and hd 120p at 10bit
(a loupe atachment would be great to).

As i understand it the sdi output is only hd not 4k unfortunately .

I'm pretty sure Zacuto will come up with a design that goes with their VCT baseplate, put the axis mini and a loupe for the LCD, like they did for the FS5
hand held will be nice

I'm also not convinced for the lack of choice between 8 bits 420 and 12 bits RAW...a 10bit 422 1080p is what I wanted...that FS5 has

CFast going down in price has been waited for, and not happened, for quite a while now. Hopefully it happens, but progress hasn't happen for quite a while.

Very disapointed that Canon did not put 422 10 bit internally...but not suprised at all. Yes it has a lot of great features, but who really needs raw on a camera aimed at low end doc filmakers, corporate and event shooters? For me the C200 could've been call the C100 mkIII because it's aiming pretty much at the same customers as the C100 and you still need an external recorder to get a decent codec.
Can't wait to see what Panasonic has to offer.

Well the thing that excites me is of course it has 4K but also 120fps in HD....very usefull and something I would use a lot in Sports.

I see the C200 being useful for corporate work. SD cards with backup for hours of interviews and basic broll, and high bitrate for product beauty shots and graphics work.

It's clear to me that Canon had 2 cameras in mind when they made this camera, the FS5 and the C300mkII. They had to offer something that the FS5 don't have (like internal raw) but at the same time they had to be sure not to affect too much the C300 mkII sales. Yes, the C200 will have an update in 2018 that will add XAVC but it will only be 8 bit.
Like I said, I'm still waiting to know what Panasonic has to offer.

Having scanned B&H - the $199 Delkin CFast 2.0 128 GB cards seem to work fine on 1DXII in its 800 Mbps video but, according to reviews, are not good enough for URSA 4.6 Raw. Which they shouldn't be, as uncompressed Cinema DNG 4K Raw is 515 MB/s, far higher than Delkin rates it own cards. This will need to be tested for the C200 Raw Light.

Trascend 128 GB ($249, $1.94/GB) and 256 GB ($459, $1.79/GB) cards seem to work just fine. Five times $459 is still pricey but yet much cheaper than ~ $9/GB these cards were upon their introduction in 2014.

IMO, people really miss that the catch with Canon Raw Light is that there are no further compression options, although I did see a 5/1 mentioned somewhere in addition to the announced 3/1 1 Gbps option. Sony X-OCN codec does 4K 24p at 661 Mbps, which ought to be good enough for the more affordable C Fast 2.0 cards.

So, 5/1 may be the key here (if it exists). 6/1 is something Canon users should ask for.

Is there a version that will have the screen only and no viewfinder? The i can just get a loop for the screen for when i need it. And it will be a better positioned viewfinder than the built in one. Atleast for the way I shoot.

I think it was designed to be the Amira for the C700.
