My conclusion for episode 3: Film still wins. DSLR is not far behind. 4k is definitely better than 2K. RED, the most logical RAW bridge between film and DSLR, is not included in the tests for reasons which remain completely unclear and somewhat arbitrary.

Yes I loved the 2k vs 4k scans of the 35mm I remember arguing at Fotokem and Kodak years ago about that there was a difference between the scans.

If only I could go back in time with this video and be the young whippersnapper that's completely right on a debate level even though he has no money or power to use the technology, that would show them.

Zacuto is heavily focused on DSLR products...no?

Also, they said, and there is some merit to it, that putting RED or the EX-3 in just makes it a pissing match. I think the point was to show how these cameras compared to each other and then generally drink DSLR koolaid altogether when watching stuff on a projected screen and such.

As a "low budget filmmaker" myself, I embrace the whole DSLR thing. It is exciting that some big names have gotten behind them so fervently, not only because of the potential they have in the future, but because of the images that produce right now.

That's what I would originally have thought had it not been "pseudo" RAW. Oh well. Personally, I found the comments section more interesting, at least until they went in and started editing it up.

My assumption was they probably took a RAW photograph and then downres'd it to 2k or 4k and potentially applied some estimated characteristics of how the camera digests the incoming image in video mode because even in RAW I doubt you're going to get the fully uncompressed 21 megapixel image ala photoburst.
 
BTW, I still watched the last episode, and I really appreciate Zacuto putting this all together, tons of great info, but for me personally by the last episode I had already reached the "House just shot their season finale on a 5D MKII with Canon glass and it looked incredible on my 30" Apple Cinema Display compressed and streamed over the internet and at no point in my immediate future am I going to need to produce anything that looks as good or better than that, so I officially don't care about any more quality tests or pixelpeeping" attitude.

Having only DSLR in the shootout meant the big winner of the shootout would be a DSLR. This is similar to a presidential ellection in a third world country. All the candidates are linked to the same person.

This shootout was never about comparing different digital solutions to film (such as adaptors, Red, etc.). It was about promoting DSLR. They made sure none of the tests included movement or otherwise DSLR nonos. They should have renamed it "the great Zacuto DSLR gear for sale Promotion Shootout".

True, but this is the best way to reach their target market in this day and age. Social networking based marketing.

I think Zacuto offered a great service as well as promoted their name. This shootout really got some people to notice how good the DSLRs are.

And I agree, after House, one does not need to talk about quallity.

And after the AF-100 hits the streets, the game will be forever changed. Good timing on their part.
 
The test was about to see where these new sub 5k cameras are at when compared to the best image acquisition. It seems logical they didn't include all the other in between cameras that they could have included. It was good for what it is.
 
It was called "The Great DSLR Shootout" FFS. What's so hard to understand about that?
Chucking a Red into the pond would have just muddied the waters.
Film, real film came out top, as you would expect, what was interesting was to see how close, or how far short DSLRs would come.
Skew and moire are a given, but it was informative to see the DR and resolution in relation to film.
As for the "pseudo-raw" test, my understanding was that it was to see how a hypothetical raw capture mode at 1080p might stack up.

Kodjo….what’s your problem with DSLRs? If you don’t like them and prefer your cam with an adapter then just be happy with that. If you go back and do some research you’ll find, as daveswan suggested, this was ALL about the DSLRs in comparison to film from the start. Red had nothing to do with this. The popularity of these cameras is what drove all of this. It was not meant for any particular winner (film is still the champ) but was only to show how these DSLRs would hold up (or fail miserably) to the standard film (because folks kept asking and we’ve all wondered). What came out of it are some weaknesses and strengths.

I suggest the folks who complain about why Red and other types of cameras were not in the mix to go and do their own comprehensive tests on whatever camera they like…at their own expense.
 
I think it's perfectly natural given the questions that were raised to see how RED would compare. My sense is that there were probably some other reasons behind the scenes why RED was not at the table.
 
What's amazing to me is how much one camera can look excellent in one scenario and then look like total crap in another. I was amazed how good the 5dmkII and the 7d looked with the girl and flower scene...yet the GH1 did not look good at all...but then they did the green screen test and the 5dmkII and the 7d look like crap in the reproduction of the jean colors, yet the GH1 outshines them.

I've noticed this before in my own productions. I own al three cameras and now when I go scouting for locations or do a pre-pro, I take the cameras and see which one would fare better with the conditions at hand...
