The holy grail (Canon Raw Rumor)

wowz,

to win over the videographers from taking the scarlet, it better be competitively priced and offer manual audio leveling with reduced skew and a great dynamic range ;)

We've been hearing these rumors for a year now. Looking forward to actual product announcements, if/when.

Not rumors of actual field trials. And a raw codec isn't a rumor there's a patent application for it.

Firstly, I'm a stills photographer with no real experience of video and that's what I'm here to learn about + I have no inside info.

However what I am pretty certain about is that a 1Ds mkIV is expected and a bit overdue. The 1Ds mkIII having been released close to the 1D mkIII. I'm pretty good at separating the fact from the fiction with these rumours. Whilst a 5D mkIII is possible earlier because a lot of stills photographers are grumbling about the inferior AF of the 5D mkII compared to the 7D, I think a 1Ds mkIV is far more probable simply on the grounds that it is expected and the 5D mkII basically equalled the 1Ds mkIII's image quality. I very much doubt that Canon would introduce a 5D mkIII at this stage, which would be a competitor to its top pro flagship camera - they already did that once and it killed a lot of interest in the 1Ds mkIII.

Also you'll notice that Tim Smith of Canon made a lot about how Canon would not normally offer a camera like the 5D mkII at this price point to high end filmmakers when it would be expected that they would be selling a more expensive camera to them. Strongly hinting that the big video features would be on a far more expensive camera. The 1D mkIV has come and it basically just has a 7D type video implementation. Anyway it would make most sense to put the better video features on the most expensive DSLR that Canon make - the 1Ds series. Regardless of whether this particular rumour is true or not a 1Ds mkIV is almost certain to be released soon and will have some sort of video, almost certainly Canon's most advanced features yet. Expect the 1Ds mkIV to be considerably more expensive than the 1D mkIV. Remember the 1Ds series is Canon's top DSLR for still shooters and is meant for use by studio photographers and others requiring the best image quality in the class. They will want it to beat the Nikon D3x.

"I just believe that 'good enough' isn't a professional mindset."

Well... come on! A $17K body compared to a sub $5K body?

I'd say certainly in the prosumer realm, things are a little different. Especially for DIY filmmakers. Looks like Red is feeling the heat.

Which is funny since they are the ones used to making OTHERS feel the heat, lol.

It is impossible to get any other kind of screengrab from a 7D, when shooting a fine-detail chart.

Yeah, its just exciting to see RED mixing it up with comparisons to the 7D. All specs and crazy chart results aside, they're actually directly comparing their most current available camera with the 7D. Not the HPX170, HPX300, HMC150, EX3, etc...

We all draw our own conclusions I guess.

But Red didn't close the thread, don't know what you mean by that...

Thread was closed when I posted here. I had thought there was only 1 page, I saw the "Thread Closed" tag in the bottom left and assumed that was all. Now I realize there were 5 pages, but the thread was still closed when I posted.

Waiting years on end for a camera that may never come isn't a professional mindset, either, really.

Oh my gosh, that is the zinger of the week!

Moire

Moire

saw the chart on reduser. I also just watched The Godfather 2 and despite the fact that they were certainly not short on budget in one scene there is a full stroboscopic moire on Diane Keaton's coat ,but they still won 6 oscars, and well deserved. I do see moire on buildings and nets sometimes with my own eyes, without the camera, so what am I supposed to do? Buy Red glasses?
From a low budget production point of view if you have moire and you really don't like it then cut the scene, or keep it and make it short.
I do understand the point of pixel peeping if the products are comparable but sometimes looks like there is a princess-and-the-pea syndrome going on.
As a matter of fact even if the new canon-monster is the holy grail, if it comes out at more than $5k, I will totally embrace 7d's moire a $1600.

Canon RAW Camera
  • Information from a new unverifiable third-party source. Sure, why not.
  • It better A) cost less than $4000 or b) feature hotswappable storage, have no ridiculous time limit, at least not have AGC - XLR or balanced in would be good, have a real monitoring solution, and actually resolve 2K.

RED Thread
  • 7D isn't a professional video camera - it can be used in that capacity, but one can also make a shiv out of a toothbrush...that doesn't make it MIL SPEC.
  • Charts are charts are charts - and the 7D looks the same in all of them. It kind of sucks.
  • IMHO, RED has nothing to fear...yet. When someone announces a compressed RAW video camera that is actually a video camera, then I think they might want to start looking at things. But Scarlet is still looking mighty sweet from where I sit.

From the very beginning (at least to my knowledge) RED offered Digital Cinema Cameras for Industry Professionals.

I think Jim would probably agree with you. In fact, he basically stated it - "good enough" is one way of looking at the separation between the prosumer realm and the professional realm. In the professional realm it has to really work. And the Canon 7D falls flat on its face in a lot of places unless you really help it along.

Ultimately, the next camera I buy has to be the best camera for my needs for the money. The first camera I bought was the 7D, and it fit those criteria. But I've grown, and my needs have grown. If the next camera is virtually the same, but costs twice as much and records in RAW (now we have to deal with HUGE filesizes), I'll be dropping my money for a RED.

Canon, Panasonic, Nikon, Sony

There are some great opportunities here, but also a lot of change. It's definitely outside the traditional box. Throw away that box, and really see what's possible. Big Four, please make a camera that shames the RED. Innovate like crazy.

P.S. EPIC and Scarlet will evidently feature an HDR mode. For stills and video. I don't really know what that means, but it makes some part of my head at the base of my neck feel fuzzy.

I'd like to see them read out the whole chip at 24fps downscale properly and record to h.264 then keep their current implementation but record to a raw codec. But I really don't see either happening quite frankly.

Hmmm ... maybe Canon will take a still from a red camera's footage and rez it up to 18 megapixels and place it side by side with the same from a 7D with price tags placed underneath ...
LOL

Yes RED make some huge PR blunders but its part of their charm and they do make up for it ... just look at todays announcement. motion HDR shooting on all scarlets and epics
f*ck knows how they will make that one happen but if anyone can do motion HDR its them. I'm a believer.

As I mentioned in the thread, though a little more politely, kind of a dick move to post a negative thread about the 7D after shutting down the "Other Cameras" subsection since Jim didn't want to have the talk on his forum. It is just incredibly disingenuous to say "there are other forums to discuss other cameras" as though you would prefer to keep the s/n ratio down...and then bring up the 7D the minute you are able to point one at a chart.

This doesn't change my view that the Scarlet S35 will be a game changer and I'll be in line as soon as allowed...but I have noticed more and more why so many in our community dislike the Red Team (though I still like them), they can be pretty childish when they feel threatened.

I just think that maybe Red underestimated how much people are willing to "give in" when it comes to the price / performance / image aesthetics ratio.

There were a lot of us out there that were used to working with limitations, coming from DV/HDV. All we ever really wanted was an inexpensive HD camera with a 35mm sensor. Isn't that why everyone was building and buying 35mm adapters for their DV/HDV/P2 cameras all these years? The new DSLR's aren't perfect, but for the price... they offer what we've been after.
