The Great Camera Shootout 2010

Skip first 9 minutes, then it gets interesting. What they shot the movie theater with? Another DSLR? It is jellofest. This is one area where CMOS-based DSLRs will never get close to film - film does not produce jello.

This is kind of a stupid comment. The new Red MX sensor (CMOS) is only 1ms behind a film shutter now and I guaranteed the next generation of Canon DSLR's will be close as well. They simply have to improve the read time, they just wont sell next gen cameras if they don't.

Any of the HDSLR manufacturers could easily take the market if, and this is a big IF, they give the video shooters what they really want.

It's so easy to do, but so dependent on what comes down from "on high". If management doesn't see the value, then we'll have to wait two or even three, four generations to get what we really want.

However, I think the Hollywood people have bent Canon's ear, and I'm certain that there's going to be some exciting developments coming out of the next hardware iterations of their HDSLRs.

I've heard it said that RED is a speed boat while Canon is an ocean liner. Meaning, RED can change direction in an instant, but Canon takes awhile. The problem for RED, is it's a lot easier for them to sink if they aren't making a big splash :D

Canon is nothing if not predictable. They gave us 24p on the 5D...about a year and a half later. They move slowly, but they move entire markets with them. I'm excited for the future, but am happy with the present too. The 5D is a fantastic tool. Not perfect, but a step in the right direction. Fortunately for me, I can use it now for my work and not have to wait till it's perfected *cough, cough* Scarlet *cough, cough*

Fantastic. I think it's a little silly saying Zacuto doesn't have a commercial interest in these projects - that it's some some sort of entertainment venture. The camera bodies may not be Zacuto, but everything else certainly is.

Doesn't diminish how much effort went into this and the good results they consistently achieve.

RED has only come out with one main product so far, so I'd say it's a little premature in speculating how they can react to the competition.

I don't think it's premature because we've seen how they react to competition. They delay their product and make revisions. Canon doesn't have to delay ever because at the end of the day, they are releasing a STILLS camera that shoots video. Canon's main market for DSLRs still is photographers. Where as if RED doesn't release a new video camera that people want to spend their money on, they are out of luck.

Agreed, this was a stupid comment. Should never use "never" :) It looks like that current-gen DSLRs can be used handheld only by people with rock-steady hands with elaborate stabilizing rigs. I've seen many DSLR videos to date, they look spectacular when the camera is locked down, but break into jello when it is handheld or mounted on a car or a helicopter.

Hopefully next generation cameras will get better.

Guys, I am a GH1 fan too, but this is not my understanding of the situation. I believe Bloom feels that it cannot be tweaked sufficiently for his tastes. Whether he dialed down the settings at all for this test or not, I'm not sure, but I know he believes the settings can not be dialed down enough, no matter what.

EDIT: not sure why the quote function isn't giving me what want, but this is replying to Ben and Mad HMC re: what Bloom said about the GH1 settings.

I'm pretty impressed at how well the dslr's compare to film, at least on the web version, (and it sounds like many felt the same way in the theater). I think with some adjustments in the lighting, lowering the contrast ratio.. etc, they could be even closer. Of course the skin tones produced by film are to die for, but for the price, dslrs rock.

I too was surprised not to see the Red in this mix, but I guess it would fall somewhere between film and the dslr's.

Erik, you didn't get my point. We don't sell any of the cameras, so we have no vested interest in one camera being better over another. This is a camera test, not an accessory test. Plus, we didn't do the test, Bob, Philip, Gary and Ryan did. I just made a documentary about their test. I think that everyone will agree that Zacuto producing this test has nothing to do with the outcome of the TEST itself.

Yes, their is a marketing benefit (that's how we can afford to make all of our content) but I don't think it ever slants the content itself, at least I try not to and I never bring the word Zacuto or try to sell in any of my content. At least give me that.

I think my original post speaks to the integrity of your ongoing tests of emerging technology, does it not?

Zacuto,

Thanks for the tests. Question, what cams did you use to shoot the sit down talk (desaturated look in the big room with the two guys discussing them)?

You succeed in this. Great content and lots of fun.

I thought it was a fantastic test and was really impressed by ALL the cameras. Wonderful to see film finally make it in the comparisons. Thank you so much for this and I can't wait until the next one.

These forums can be brutal!

If you mean the black and white shots of the dicussion then I also want to know from Zacuto what was used. It looked a bit like Red but am wondering it is the 5D or not. Good work zacuto.
