Film is Dead: Evening with Robert Rodriguez

A lot of what he said re speed, immediacy and risk taking has been echoed recently by Peter Jackson experimenting with his new RED camera

Video will never completely replace film because it's not archival yet. Does anyone believe that a Panasonic mini-dv tape manafactured last year will be around in the year 2103?... "Employees Leaving the Lumiere Factory" by the Lumiere's brother was shot in 1895 and it's still around. Hopefully someday the technology will be there... This is coming from someone who exclusively shoots video, so...

Stupid name for the title, but what he has to say goes beyond "Film is Dead" which is good. He's pointing out a lot of BENEFITS that video offers, but not saying FILM IS DEAD.

Video will never completely replace film because it's not archival yet. ...

First you say it will never happen.

Then you say yet!?!?!

Plus... you are absolutely 100% incorrect in your premise as it is the exact opposite of what you are espousing.

This is from way back in 1999 no less!

Fight Against 'Film Rot' Has New Ally; EDS and WAM!NET Team Offers Pay-As-You-Go Digital Media Management.

"LAS VEGAS, April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The problem of "entertainment entropy" -- beloved films and TV shows and historic news broadcasts decomposing faster than their owners can save them -- has worried the media and entertainment industries for years, and with good reason: Ninety percent of all classic film prints now are in poor condition, according to the UCLA Film and Television Archive, and of those produced before 1950, at least half have disappeared.
Now the fight against "film rot" has a new ally. EDS (NYSE: EDS), the information technology company that was honored last year by Anthology Film Archives for the digital restoration of Gone With The Wind, and WAM!NET ..."

The argument that film is archival and digital is not, is Cool Aide that is being sold to consumers by FILM MANUFACTURERS!

I say always be wary of the Cool Aide lest one end up like Jim Jones followers.

Does anyone believe that a Panasonic mini-dv tape manafactured last year will be around in the year 2103?...

I don't think that you will be able to buy them in even 5 years.

I also don't think that anyone is restricted to any tape format for storage or to a sing format as it is DIGITAL not ANALOG.

It is very easy to make an EXACT DIGITAL COPY of the work over and over again.

You will be able to have multiple copies spread over multiple devices and yes this digital copy will not be subject to rot or to fire or to physical theft etc...

"Employees Leaving the Lumiere Factory" by the Lumiere's brother was shot in 1895 and it's still around...

Please see link above.

Also Digital archiving is being used across the board to save, restore, catalog, and distribute works shot on emulsion film.

...Hopefully someday the technology will be there... This is coming from someone who exclusively shoots video, so...

Capturing images on emulsion and digitally during production are different. Each has advantages.

The point is that Digital's acquisition advantage is gaining as it closes in on films resolution and latitude.

As to archiving... digital has won that race years and years and years ago.
