The Great Camera Shootout 2010

Woo.

I suspect once they're all graded and thrown on the web most of the footage will be pretty much indistinguishable.

I am hoping the GH1 exceeds the expectations of the Canon people...I suspect it will given that it usually resolves more resolution in most conventional tests.

I see they have the T2i with a nice piece of glass on it but they have the kit lens on the GH1...hopefully they test all the cameras with the same or similar lenses. I trust these guys.

LOL that was hilarious, of course film is going to kick dslr ass but its going to be a fun test
way to go zacuto !

There is no reason for film to kick DSLR ass

It seems that due to viewing distance the required resolution in theatre is lower than a nice big monitor

DR range in the image can be controlled using (lots) of lighiting with a DSLR

That DR can probably out do the projector

Given a smaller lighting budget and more demanding viewing device film would surely win of course

It seems that DSLR might be quite good for projection while failing in braodcast due to subsequesnt compression multiplying moiree

Thats why Lucas could like a DSRL while Mr BBC Tech threw his toys straight out of the pram ?

Are you insane?

Have you ever shot film, taken into a post facility and watched a transfer session?

Don't get into an insane armchair argument about how an HDSLR can even approach what Kodak 5219/7219 is capable of? Try shooting under exposed 2 full stops and print up on HDSLR, I dare you.

Are you insane?

Read and understand my post

You mention exposure - so do I

Using 'lots of lighting' wont result in 'two stops under'

Any one who has shot DSLR for stills since 1999 understands ETTR

Also I mention viewing resolution

I also mention viewing resolution and situations where you WILL be able to tell the difference - your post house example is another good one

You telling me you can tell the difference on an I phone ?

I am both sane and literate

Its not an armchair argument - DSLR could look good projected and bad broadcast - that is an, IMO, interesting observation that the gang may be concluding

I note the avatar you hide behind - it appears to depict a creature that failed to adapt to changing times and is now extinct - is there any connection ?

Technically, the sensors in current DSLRs work quite well even 2 stops under exposed...when using the still image RAW format. But yeah, its not quite there yet with video.

I think the game changing DLSR will either be the 1D or GH-1, for some reason I feel like the GH-1 is really going to shine.

what do you guys think?

I think the GH-1 will do better than expected...but I'm with Papa...I think the 7D will be a surprising hit. I also expect the 5D to do use its strength and shine but to be honest....I don't think there will be anything super special about the 1D4 (if they are using it). Film...well.....film is film. But morgan_moore is right (I've had this discussion with a few others) when DSLRs are exposed correctly all benefits of film acquisition are now on equal footing with these cameras once you get it all on the computer. Sure....film is better at it and one could "get there" easier...but in the end it would be compression to really concern yourself with IMO.

T2i for the win, dirt cheap, same video as 7D, SD CARDS!
Ok so you can't leave it outside in the rain all night, but that isnt an
everyday thing.

Yay, someone's with me..

I was starting to regret my decisions on purchasing this camera. But, its all I could afford.

Nikon might be the surprise one since no one really talks about it. I just have a feeling on that but I could be wrong. I've seen some D3 footage and it looks good but I agree with everyone the GH-1 will probably be one of the better ones. Can't wait it just sucks it's divided into 3 episodes.
