The EOS 60D has been announced

It will be interesting to know if the image looks at least a little bit better than the T2i... I guess we can't really tell from a YouTube test, right?

I was hoping for a little bit more of real resolution, but from what I have been reading here there's no hope for getting that... right?

I don't get it though, the 60D's promotions make so much emphasis on the video side.

I'm planning on picking one up in a month or so. For you guys who have it already, can you confirm what the output from the HDMI port is during recording? i.e. Standard or High definition?

Thanks

I'm hoping to snag one of these as well. I'm just hoping that I can pump in my sennheiser lav with the manual audio and have things sound good enough for local TV. Anyone know if that would work alright?

Some questions that I think a lot of us want to know (some of which have already been asked):

What is the HDMI output quality when recording?

How good/bad is the audio input now that you can set the gain?

Is there auto focus while recording video?

How much video can you shoot on one charge of the battery?

Are there any overheating problems with extended use?

This stuff has been 'guessed at already:

HDMI is likely to be SD as there's only a single Digic4 processor (early guesses at full HD output were based on thinking it might have a Digic5.)

Audio input I'll defer to others (or find people who have used the trick where you feed 1 channel with a high gain signal to 'maximize' the noisefloor on the remaining channel.)

Auto focus = via half depress of shutter button I believe (not continuous)

Battery life should fall somewhere between T2i (which has a smaller battery) and 7D (which has 2 Digic4 chips and a controller chip to drive, while T2i/60D have just 1 Digic4 & controller chip.)

As for overheating, I'm hoping they attended to this a bit in addition to giving us some manual gain ability for the audio and the articulating display since they say 'Optimized for video'

You don't have to do this on the 60D because AGC can be disabled.

I'd like to know too, but Scaler's answer is most likely correct. :)

How good/bad is the audio input now that you can set the gain?

You will have to watch it. My G10 has manual audio control (but no external mic input), and does cancel background noise IF it's quiet. But you have to make sure that it's set high enough to pick up the talent's voice. :)

Is there auto focus while recording video?

Not in the sense of the word. Just as Scaler said.

The battery has the same capacity as the 7D's, according to a review I read in a magazine based on a pre-production model.

Are there any overheating problems with extended use?

If there wasn't, Canon would probably be announcing it left, right, and centre. :D

It *is* the same battery as used in the 7D (and 5D MkII?) but again I suspect the 7D has a higher current draw (not to mention faster shooting during stills etc) so the 60D might edge it out a tad in terms of video shooting lenght--depending on what features are being made use of on each camera.

Almost all reports so far have said build quality feels much more substantial than the T2i, so I'm glad I waited as well. It might be plastic but at least it's sealed enough I won't worry about the 2 months or so of below freezing temps we get here (at night/evening/morning which is when I'll be wanting to shoot.)

Now if only Amazon would update my order status with something favorable...*everything* else from that order shipped this week and has mostly arrived.

Hi everyone, I just picked up my 60D today, and first impressions: I agree with what everyone who has held the 60D has said about the build quality. Much better than expected! The articulated screen feels pretty solid as well. So far, so good. Can't wait to shoot on this thing with my Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 VC that should be coming soon :D

Right sorry forgot to add that. In fact I think you have the options of auto, manual (gain) and disabled don't you?

Well, you have auto gain or manual gain as your choices. Auto gain of manual levels is the undefined set.

Now, if there was a limiter that could be applied to AGC, that would be another approach to it, and would certainly have some value.

I think it bears mentioning that you can't adjust audio levels while recording. If I had this camera I would leave it set to auto, and then use a double system to get my primary sound with attention to manual control.

I'm selling my T2i kit for 1k today. I shouldn't be giving talking about this but since I work for an authorized canon dealer I won't have to spend much more than 200 bucks to get the 60D w/ kit lens. STOKED!! :D

For me the the ability to shut off AGC and NOT have control over the levels is perfectly fine. It's all about having a quality reference for a separate system as well as a quality back up should it be necessary.

Yes, but with the 60D you DO have the ability to shut off the AGC and control levels (including a sound level meter) - the only disadvantage that I can see is that you cannot make level adjustments once you start recording. But personally I don't think you should be adjusting sound levels during recording.

So why wouldn't you want to have both a second recording and a decent camera recording?

Tasty upgrade to the T2i... but it's dissapointing that we don't get any video upgrades... more effective resolution and aliasing/moire control... =( ...

I don't think I will spend the money for the upgrade... it looks more like bells and whistles to me.
