The closer we come to NAB...

Too much drama ain't it? Ok matt, you are right, if you do what you do with passion I guess you don't have to own your equipment if you don't wanna. I like to get up at 3:00 a.m. myself and hug my cameras. I don't know what it is but it makes me feel...happy . I guess is just the way I am, maybe I am just getting old.

too much information John

You could move down to florida and annoy car3o along with all the other old codgers

own, rent, beg, borrow it's all good if you're personally happy with the result or not and get paid to eat well.

soon we'll have a couple of new DSLRs to ***** about......or maybe even make films and or money with.

but we are a soap...

Yep!

... This one got me thinking about my script development. If anyone has any other recommendations on something to watch I'm all ears.

What about "Blow", "The Doors" and "Traffic"? If you want "real live action" come to Hamburg, Frankfurt or Berlin... near the central stations. Better than every Christiane F. Movie... ;-)

I would love to work/live in Germany for a bit, but alas, I'm not an EU citizen, and thus unable to gain a work visa easily, and don't think I can claim being a refugee.

Berlin is great though.

The Artist needs to have the basic tools to DO his/her Art because Art happens in the now. They have to be able to catch the moment and record it. A script writers first thought with "paper and pen", a musician catches a melody with a "handheld recorder", a still photographer "freezes" a moment in time, a filmmaker that sees a story in a "clip" they take at the park and develops it in to an award winning feature film.

"Art creates the business" not the other way around. The D90 is an artistic tool. Create!

Nice film clip. I didn´t know it. Werner Herzog and Wim Wenders (Paris, Texas) are some of the older filmmaker here in germany. Nowadays we have some good younger age.

I don´t know where you come from, but some states outside the EU don´t need a visa like USA, Canada, Australia. They can stay as a guest up to 3 months.

But sure, for working you need a work permit. And that´s hard to get...

usually with a cell phone, dv camcorder, mini still camera, or pencil sketch though. if i know few dp's who own hvx's i know even fewer who bring them to the park.

What I love about the D90 is I can sit on a park bench with it and dream, take a still, shoot a clip, and not draw attention.

Thanks for that hepabst - I really liked your other movies on vimeo also.

As a newbie to this forum I can see there's a kind of love-hate-love relationship between you guys and the D90 - it's a bit wierd - but I like it.

Having looked around what's on offer, and checked what I can afford, it looks like the D90 is my choice because
(1) I can afford it - just. (Hey, I'm British, we're poor okay!)
(2) I think it has better picture quality than the camcorders with the same price tag
(3) You get a really good 12.3Mp stills camera absolutley FREE!!!
(4) I can pack it in my hand baggage without the airline charging me for another ticket or people in customs asking for loads of paperwork
(5) It's inobtrusive for "guerilla" film making - it looks like a stills camera ('cos that's what it is) but if it isn't giving off a flash you're not taking photographs - right?
(6) Did I mention the price?

The Lumix GH-1 sounds really great - but it will be twice the price of the D90 when it's released in the UK - if it's USD1,500 then I would expect the UK price to be GBP1,500

So unless Nikon announce on the 14th a new camera with the same features at a lower price, or better features at the same price, then I'll be getting me a D90 and learning to love it like you guys.

your becauses sound absolutely right but don't expect too much of the *technical* image quality; it's not nearly as good as hdv cameras in the same price range. that didn't stop me from shooting my feature on the d90 mind you, even though i own an hv20 and was offered an hvx and even a red for almost nothing, all of them which would have given me sharper footage.

in sweden you don't have to marry to get a work permit through your gf, come for a month, find one, tell authorities you've been together three years, and voila, green card. the only real problem with this strategy is if you're already married. :-)

so how does your wife feel about your girlfriend?

plenty of live action here too

Hopefully I'll be over there next year for some festivals. I have a lot of family there mostly around hamburg. I have never met them. They run some big building business Schulz family.

i was the bf that got her the permit actually. :-) she's an eu citizen so it was real easy but i have a friend who brought over his girlfriend from the us, which worked fine too. then when they decided to move there they had to get married.

You got the love hate bit right. Even though the GH1 has manual control and can't cook my lunch I'm still not sure if I'll replace the D90 with one. There is something about the lo-fi 16mm look of the D90 that is really endearing. It doesn't have the resolution of a camcorder but it has the warmth of film. My money may be better spent on the new cheaper Nikon as a B camera.

Surely the new camera won't be any more crippled than the D90 so it should work quite well for your film.

Not poor.... bankrupt. The chickens have finally come home to roost and it's about bloody time. We're living in an alternate universe here, it hasn't sunk in yet that capitalism has gone to ****.

The free stills camera part is great. I hadn't done any photography for a long time before I got the D90. If it's there you have to use it.

Make sure you stabilize it and use wide (28mm) glass for handheld. A cheap camera tripod with a centre shaft half collapsed and held mid shaft works really well to balance it and it still just looks like a stills camera. Or you can attach a weight to the base of a monopod.

Yeah, the D90 is awesome in many ways, and it is an amazing still camera. But it has so much more potential video wise, and that's whats frustrating.

I would wait for the next big announcement from Nikon before buying a D90, though. Unless you need something ASAP.

But the examples posted on this forum, prove that the D90 is very capable for a variety of interesting shooting styles.
