There is definitely something odd about the way the audio gain works. When gain staging, I usually test both a -20 tone and a full saturation tone, 0dBFS, just to make sure I’m not clipping the preamp. On the R5C, actually reaching 0 dB is nearly impossible no matter how low the voltage signal is or how high the camera gain is, therefore I am sure it isn't clipping the preamp. Instead, the camera seems to self regulate itself down to about -5 dB. I don't know what is going on, but I haven't had any problems getting useable audio on the R5c as long as I'm careful not to try to push the input gain too high.

My sentiments exactly - but it would be good to know what's actually going on in the audio chain.

I'm wondering if anybody has any actual information on what was changed. I mostly use the Canon as a C gimbal cam rather than dealing with the weight of my C500MKII's. The image doesn't hold up as well as the cinema cameras in compressed modes and I'm hoping they bridged the gap a bit more.

All the newest FW says is:

1. Improves the image quality of Canon Log 3 when shooting in XF-AVC or MP4 formats.

That can mean anything but since Netflix requires C-Log3 (XF-AVC) and is all about the optimum IQ from a box, it was enough. (I think Canon maybe worked on having a bit less noise or maybe less compression artifacts.)
 
Well, you may already know this but in case you don't...

Canon Rep in Japan talked to Youtuber about what upcoming firmware will brings to R5C. Some of it is already in Newsshooter article but I will write what I know so far.

1) Extended battery life. It only works with XF-AVC and not for RAW recording but should extend battery life up to 30% longer.

2) Two autofocus improvements. One being detecting human head more precisely especially when facing backwards and the other being focus tracking box changing its size and shape depending on the tracking subject. (around 15min. mark on the video link below)

3) Switching time between video and photo will be faster

4) Waveform could be enlarged to 2X

5) You can finally view magnified image when shooting 8K mp4 ( I may be wrong check the Newsshooter article)

6) some kind of digital tele conversion option similar to Sony's clear image scan.

I was debating whether I should sell this camera but after knowing these updates are coming, I think I will stick to it little while. It is nice to know that the company cares about R5C.

Recently purchased the R5C, noticed it needs firmware updates, I am assuming you update the video and photo side separately?

Hello fellow R5c users,

I'm filming a 3 camera round table tonight and would like to include the R5C, would be recording one take about 60 -75 minutes, 4K 29.97. From what I read I should have no problem...no over heating issues or filming limitations, does anyone have real world experience using this camera for a continuous take 60 plus minutes?

Yep, just did one at 24p/4K 422 XF-AVC Clog3 and it ran just over 2.5 hours on a 512GB Sandisk CFexpress type B card. Funny thing is the two 5D MKIIIs I had running ML Raw both failed spectacularly (first time in almost a decade of consistent performance btw so thinking it might be the CF cards which are old and I didn't think to test beforehand!). Point is I had the R5C as my wide and it ended up saving my ass big time bcuz cropping in for medium shots in post - particularly on s 1080p timeline - was totally doable. All that to say, you should be totally fine, just make sure you have your battery situation worked out. I had an FX-Lion Nano One + two batteries in the oem grip. Hope that helps, and good luck!

The latest R5C firmware update is now available via Canon Asia. Haven't tried it yet but have seen one owner who upgraded say it works great so far - bit obviously early days on this: https://asia.canon/en/support/EOS R5 C/model

Caution:
- Please use an SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card that is 512MB or greater to perform the firmware update.
- Firmware version 1.0.4.1 is for updating EOS R5 C cameras running firmware version 1.0.0.1 - 1.0.3.1. If your camera's firmware is already version 1.0.4.1, it is not necessary to update the firmware. Once the camera is updated to the latest version, it cannot be restored to a previous version.
- Please refrain from loading menu settings generated using the most recent firmware version to a product running an old firmware version, as doing so may affect camera operations.
- Firmware update must be performed in VIDEO mode.

Preparations for a firmware update:
- After the firmware update has been performed, the camera's menu settings will be reset. It is recommended that, prior to starting update operations, users save their menu settings as settings data to an SD card, separate from the one that will be used to carry out the update. This saved data can be loaded into the camera and the settings can be changed after the update has been completed. For further information on this, please refer to the section in the unit's Instruction Manual titled "Saving and Loading Camera Settings."
- The downloaded folder contains the firmware (file name: VSD8.FIM / file size: 90,203,000 byte), and instructions on the firmware update procedures (a PDF file in five languages: Japanese, English, French, Spanish and Simplified Chinese). Prior to starting the firmware update operations, please be sure to carefully review and confirm your understanding of these instructions.

Regarding the Software Included in this Firmware:
The software included in this firmware is comprised of software modules developed by both Canon and third parties.

Display of License Information of Free Software Modules Included in this Firmware:
The license information required to be displayed for the free software modules included with this firmware is saved in the download file. To check the free software module licenses, please refer to the "EOS R5C OSS info.pdf".

The following items are required to perform this firmware update:
1. Camera Body EOS R5 C
2. A computer (OS requirements: macOS 13, macOS 12, macOS 11, 10.15 - 10.14)
3. SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card with a capacity of 512MB or more (commercially available)
4. An SD card reader/writer (commercially available) or an SD card slot built into the computer
5. A fully charged battery pack for the camera, or a dedicated AC adapter kit (optional)
6. The firmware (the downloaded file)
