The new firmware is fantastic.

* 1080p25 and 1080p30 modes that can span with B-frames at 24mpbs

* 1080i60/50 now has B frames

* Focus areas expanded to the full image

* Better NR in High ISO video

* The color and gamma shift when you go from preview to recording is almost nothing now.

* Improvements in Auto White balancing

* Mic sensitivity has been improved when using external mics

* A faster startup when first switched on?

Not sure if I'm imagining things but the colors in general seem to be better and continuous autofocusing seems to be improved, it doesn't focus hunt as much


Thankyou to Panasonic for listening to your customers and showing us what a brilliant machine the GH2 is

Are you saying the same camera can shoot both these modes? eg a PAL version

How/where do you set that option?

(I am only curious and its an academic question more than anything)
 
The AF improvements are great! I shot some test video with my 20mm pancake and the camera doesn't hunt nearly as often now. Many thanks to Panasonic and looking forward to new PV hacks!

Not at the moment but once the hack is ported over you will be able to, you can currently on version 1.0 with the hack. It is selectable under the setup menu
 
Sorry if this has already been asked. I guess the new cameras will come with firmware 1.1. Will we be able to load the 1.0 firmware to make these new GH2 cameras hackable? Or are we back to what happened with the GH1?
 
The v1.1 firmware update seems to have changed the White Balance a bit. At least my Tungsten preset is different since the update. It's slightly warmer. I shot video before and after the update and compared. It looks just a bit warmer to the eye, and the Vectorscope in Final Cut shows the image pushed a bit more towards orange and red. The camera settings and lighting conditions were exactly the same for each shot I took. Take a peek:

Autofocus does seem to be much improved on my 20mm pancake when shooting video. It does much less hunting. I don't see any difference in NR performance. I shot before and after footage at 3200 ISO.

What happened with the GH1 with firmware 1.34 was that it was never released as a downloadable update so VK couldn't reverse engineer it and Panasonic purposely changed the way it did it firmware update checks(though that changed when he got the hardware to extract that firmware).

The 1.1 preloaded onto new GH2 should be identical to the web firmware which we already have, and even if it isn't, VK could just extract the firmware now he has the hardware. But I don't think Panasonic will do that this time around, I think they finally realise that this hack is beneficial to them as well. Hopefully they will be willing to take a gamble and release a camera with appstore like modular software expansion capability
 
I agree that the WB is better, my 45mm Olympus had trouble focusing in low light, haven't tried the 20mm yet. Flash WB is different as well. Noise at ISO 800 seems just a tad better, plenty of detail visible.
 
Excuse my ignorance: is this "1080i60/50 now has B frames" and improvement for those playing with Twixtor? Meaning will you be able to do what you do in Twixtor with 720p60, with 1080i60/50 footage?

Haven't played or own Twixtor, but it is on my shortlist.

You're probably still better using a hacked bitrate low GOP 720p60 if you want to use Twixtor as it is a progressive image.
 
Bullshit, the HBR mode is 1080/30 wrapped in a 60i. This is not 30P. I'm still seeing upper dominance fields. Looks like crap! Stick with the hacks guys. Although the focus does look better with the 20 pancake.

avchd never has 30p.. its always wrapped in 60i.
