Tarts Fools & The G-Men

We had some compression problems at the last minute, unfortunately. Hoping to detail what went wrong and how to avoid it for future projects in a blog post in the not too distant future.

I'm afraid you got too fancy with the compression stuff, given how many people are having trouble with it (myself included).

Eh, not really. We went crazy on the picture stuff, but the audio is what's causing the problems, and that was very straight forward. It's a known bug in quicktime, but no one knows exactly what causes it. The vague solution that seems to work is to simply re-encode the audio.

Hey guys, yours is the first film I've watched so far, and I just started tonight. Wanted to check out the local team! :)

Since I'm so late into the fest viewing, I'm sure anything/everything I state is old hat & already covered.

My VERY first thought was "Ugh, the compression/noise". At times it was too distracting, because I felt there were things I was missing in the details I was hoping to see, especially since it was shot on the RED. I'm afraid the final/current delivery doesn't do the camera justice, and would LOVE to see a much higher bit rate version.

Next up is my concern about the audio ... specifically where it's slightly out of sync. Perhaps this is again due to compression, as it's noticeable across the board, but most especially on some of the SFX.

My only REAL gripe about the directing/story would be at the top of the building ... to have them firing at each other at such close range, for such a long period of time (for a gun fight with no barriers to hide behind, etc.), and especially since at least one of the clowns was firing off a scatter gun (shot gun) ... and yet it takes FOREVER for someone to finally get hit?? Maybe this is in the genre of pulp fiction, and it's common ... but it took me out of it as I counted the seconds waiting for one of these "professionals" to finally hit a target.

But, that's my only REAL gripe about it ... as the rest is more technical, specifically in the post/final delivery.

All that said, the women were HOT (understatement), and the guys all fit their roles well. I felt this was very well cast, and dug the majority of the performances, for what they were intended to be. Here & there (more specifically with the women), I thought a line could have been delivered better or differently, but not enough for me to call out any bad acting or direction. So again, with the cast, kudos!

Great camera work.... my absolute FAVORITE being when we reveal that sweet, SWEET car, with the awesome rumble of the engine. Beautiful. Editing overall was solid as well, with what I thought was a slight hiccup when the guys are in the junk yard & the younger FBI guy pistol whips the guy begging for his life.

Nice job, and really nice job trying to capture the pulp fiction genre/style.

Aside from the technical issues relating to compression, this film had some great production values. Well made and a compelling enough story and characters to keep me interested. Nice performances overall. Good cinematography as well. Felt very professional. Nice job!

I'm glad people are enjoying the film- we all had a good time making it. :)

Thanks Norm, DarkElastic, Ben Silker, and other for your feed back. Your points are well taken.

(I'm finally back in a place where I can get more then basic text emails, so I hope to answer any questions that people may have. I've been up in Alaska on a project for the last week.)

Hi Norm - glad you liked it overall. The compression caused us issues right at the end and we just simply didn't have time to address. Jerry is planning a full write up on his process in relation to that, so we should all learn more.

Yeah, the roof. We know the issues but we hope it was still fun. By the time we were on the roof we only had 3 hours to shoot that. So, we were limited by the size of the location and simply our time to shoot. So, as the entire short was a little tongue-in-cheek we figured the campy roof section would at least be OK. Like we've said - they all need to go back to criminal school. :kali:

Any movie that starts with as rockin' a sex scene as this one, has me glued to the set! This was a really fun ride and it kept me interested from the moment it started! The score was really nice and I thought the cinematography was EXCELLENT for the most part. The only part I had a problem with was the end fight on the roof. A bit too confusing for me, but I got the overall gist, and I still had a lot of fun watching it (although the "bullet wound" in the head distracted me a little). I loved the ending how you left it open for interpretation! I thought all the performers did very nice jobs, although the conversation with the last G-Man and the last Tart didn't thrill me, it didn't kill me either. Overall, good job!

Thanks for sharing!

For the roof, that's purely an editing situation. You had gotten plenty of footage, but then appeared to want to use it all. You still could have had nearly every shot included, but in a FAST rapid fire sequence so that it all takes place within a 2 second span, and then we've got bodies on the floor.

Like I said, any film with your opening sequence has a spot in my finalists any day of the week, and now it's official! Congratulations dude, and I hope to see you in LA!

I hope to make it to LA, as it would be fun to meet everyone else- but it looks like I may be up in Alaska on another shoot... we'll see ...
