In all of the footage I have seen coming out of the 550d / T2i, the aliasing looks significantly less problematic than it does on the 7D. Can anyone else confirm this, or is it just the footage that I have seen?

I thought about that but I bet it goes the other way, too. There's gotta be some people who voted the opposite just because they either have/bought a 550D or really want one.

True that.

I'd guess these are 5D/7D owners who already know how to avoid most of it.

Honestly...it didn't look like the other previous pieces he shot. I think though it might be the color grading.

Yup, I brought that up...he said it was the grade...he'd spent hours on the other footage and not so much time on this clip. Scared me for a second, because I really think the others looked better...

Please remember that the cost difference probably has a lot to do with the still picture capability as well. If you want to compare prices, it may not be as much of a 'steal' if you shoot photography as well, especially for people who need to machine gun shoot :) (the fps of picture max on each).

I think the 7D has slightly better dynamic range. I've seen in it example videos where there is more detail in the blacks as well as better tonal definition in the highlights. Anybody agree?

I don't yet :) But that's because until someone posts side by side video of same settings in dark situation with lots of ISO, I just don't trust myself. I have asked the guy that did the comparison video to put the videos side by side to see the results. I watched the video a few times and could swear I saw more noise in the 7D settings, but, it also had more detail. To me this means the gains are different. However, it could all be in my head :) So he said he'd put them side by side to help check the lower range better for everyone.

I like my 7D and have no desire to trade out, I'm waiting for when we have RAW video on a newer camera, but, since people ask me all the time what camera to get, for video, if they are NOT looking for a stills camera, I will point them to the t2i.

I think the 7D and T2i are nearly identical in video quality.

However the 7D is so much better as a stills camera it isn't even funny. And since that's half of what I use my 7D for...

Close enough to identical video quality, a decent size difference in still quality, and far worse usability on the T2i from my day with it on Saturday. I miss all my buttons, wheels, and top LCD (for both video and stills)!

I don't mean to sound arrogant, but any opinions that differ from mine to an meaningful extent are either sour grapes 7D owners (who shouldn't be, the 7D is definitely worth $1700) or ignorant T2i owners (who shouldn't be, their T2i is only worth the $800).

I've shot for 5 months with the 7D and now I'm shooting with the t2i and with any camera you need to adjust
a little to where buttons are and where certain things are in the menu.

For me ... I only see two functionality differences when shooting video.

The first is the the white balance can have kelvin adjustments only on the 7D

The second is that ISO brackets on the t2i go at 1 stop intervals
100, 200, 400, 800, 1600 3200.
To work around this when I am at 400 or 800 I adjust exposure with the aperture.
Physically between stops on manual lenses and electronically with EOS.

Once you know these anyone should be happy shooting video on either cam.

edit:
sorry ... one other gotcha

the ACK-E8 power cable for the t2i is not yet on sale from canon because the t2i is still too new !!

Thanks everybody for totally confusing me...

Heading to the USA on Monday...

I've ordered a Tokina 11-17mm lens and Tamron 17-50mm & Zacuto Z Finder from B&H...

Now for the body.... was hell bent on the 7D but all this T2i stuff has my head spinning...

I'm only interested in the video side of things...

Cheers

If all you want is video, I'd go with the t2i personally. And I have a 7D and would have made that choice had I been buying today. I say this because the 7D and t2i will/would be replaced the second Canon releases a vDSLR without alias and moire issues like we have now, so I'd save that extra money for when that time comes :)

Good advise... my thoughts is get the lenses and build a kit...

The T2i body will be good for the family camera which is due for an upgrade from a D70s

Will the Zacuto Z Finder fit on the T2i???

Cheers

Humn 7D is better for stills. As a semi-retired still shooter I should pay attention to that fact right? Then again, I've shot my best still work in 30 years with a point and shoot. I'm really confused. Maybe the T2i will rock my world... after coming from Coolpix land...

From experience, the 7D picture is much cleaner at the same ISO's than 550D. This is probably due to the extra processors. Also, the 550D doersn't have as many of the native 'clean' ISO's that the 7D has and this become very noticeable when we've been trying to match cameras on shoots.
Other than that, the pure weight and robust build of the 7D would have me choosing that over a 550D given the choice again.
