SUGGESTED RESOURCES (for going full western)

I started location hunting today. Sure I threw my script into the virtual trash last night and I'm starting over again, but I have a basic idea of what I;d like to see... so while helping my friend move 30 miles awa we had LOTS of driving to do through Toronto's rural areas and I got to thinking... there are a lot of farms out there. And horses.

So i started a checklist of places to check into for making a full blown western with horses and the works.

Local Ranches
Riding Schools
Rodeo (some cities will have this, some wont, but call and tell them what you;re doing)
Stunt/Trick Riders

Costume Rental Shops

TOMBSTONE OUTFITTERS
Replica Revolvers
More Weapons

I'll expand this list as suggestions come in, but these are the few I could think of to look into immediately and see if I can guage their interest in letting me use their land, get me in touch with more guys who'd be willing to appear in the film and get some good riding shots.

Calling and asking never hurt and farmers talk to each other. Word will get around that there's a film maker looking to shoot a western on a ranch...

Firearm rentals NYC, period non firing replicas

Center Firearms
10 W. 37th Street
New York, NY 10018

Tel. 212.244.4040
Fax. 212.947.123

They are good guys there and have really helped me out a few years ago so I try to give them some push when appropriate.

They also have non firing period replicas for rent. You need a wild west 6 shooter ... they got it.
You need a rocket launcher ... they got it. You need a sci fi gun or a pirates of the caribbean musket .. they got it.
You need holsters, fake ammo, grenades, silencer or snipers scope ... they got them too.

Rental receipts available, very handy if you are cross questioned by the law. Blank firing only available to those holding a license.

Know the laws of your state tho, for example its illegal in New York to have a replica gun, toy or model or anything unless it matches two requirements
a) must be bright yellow/red etc ie plastic toy looking
b) cannot be in the same shape as a real gun (cos ppl spray paint 'em and go mug someone)

So sometimes its better to have a rental prop from Center Firearms with receipts to back you up

LOCATION SUGGESTION: For anyone in SoCal, Vegas or The Grand Canyon area... here is a really cool spot to get wide shots. You may even be able to shoot there for free or at least "creatively free" if you plan it right. I would imagine if it's a no budget student film they might allow it without insurance. It has a camp site attached and a small bunkhouse. There are also local motels. Both are cheap. It is located a few miles from Barstow.
