The New HV30 is here

Looks like its true 24/25p now, instead of 24f, which would be cool.

Surprised it's still HDV tape though. Woulda thought that they might have gone avc-hd to sd or cf or something. That woulda made it a nice upgrade from the hv20

oh. I thought it was 24f and that was one reason a lot of people liked it b/c they could use it as a deck for the a1....

Later,
Jason

You can use it as a deck. It won't record 24F, but it'll play it back, which is what XHA1/G1/XLH1 users needed.

The HV20's 24p is generated progressively, but recorded as 60i with 2:3 pulldown.

It's an okay update but not earth shattering. I'm personally still really happy with the HV20 (which is nice, since I just bought the damn thing at Christmas).

I did a little test last weekend with the HV20 and letus mini here: http://www.philipbloom.co.uk/Philip_Bloom/HV20__Letus_Mini_test.html

I really struggled with focus, will the lcd on the HV30 be that much sharper?

Ahhh, don't you just love those beautiful blown out video highlights.

Forget resolution; when will video be able to capture full tonal range without such a sacrifice on either one end of the scale or the other? Or will our brains soon devolve and simply accept it as it is (as we now listen to our super compressed MP3s)......

that's crazily harsh! Even on film that would have been very similar. Incredibly bright winter morning sky without filters would always look like that!

...wasn't directed towards you at all mate, it was directed towards VIDEO. Film highlights and video highlights are so different. I just wish we would step off the "resolution" fanaticism and address tone range. I'd personally rather see something soft with random grain patterns but which holds elegant color and tonal spread. After all, different lenses for film have certain characteristics that give them great charm and presence. It's just my opinion, my flavor, my desire, etc....

Well you should take a look andromeda, aka reelstream, part of the blown highlights is due to the format which only uses 8bit depth, if you tap into the orginal 14bit stream straight off the CCDs the dynamic range is a little greater.

Its getting better , and if you compare it with old videos things have improved alot.

Anhar, yes, you are quite right, things have improved dramatically and I'm very thankful for that. My telecine'd footage is light years ahead now that I can get 10-bit uncompressed direct to hard drive from the Spirit scanner. And 2k/4k will be more affordable.

And soon, of course, sensors will be more dynamic. But film and video I believe will always be different and I think that's a good thing. Resolution is only one part of the equation. The random pattern of millions of light sensitive grain particles will be impossible to replicate in a grid pattern of a set number of pixels. And perhaps that's the primary difference (?) That is what may well give film it's unique quality.
