FEATURE: Stricken the Feature - A Matt Sconce Film

NEW UPDATE:

Render problem solved!

Here is the scoop.

Media Encoder for CS4 is lame when attempting render long projects. After months of laborious editing in Premiere, I suddenly realized Media Encoder would not render the sequences. It would crash, freeze, die, and cause me much grief but then came the light at the end of the tunnel....The beautiful AE CS4.

AE let me import the sequences through Dynamic link no hassle do my final VFX to the reel I am working on then export no problem. After a 5640 frame HEAVY VFX sequence AE rendered an uncompressed AVI of the 32 bit project in about 1 and a half hours. I was jazzed. Looks like it is finally happy days in this Stricken render land. The Heaviest VFX sequence should be done Tuesday and then I move on to the next VFX challenges. We are getting closer to the finish line!! -Matt

800th post! Woohoo!

We will be at Black Box over at an undisclosed Sound Studio. If you end up in the area on those dates, let me know and I will let you know where it is so you can swing by. -Matt

Cool! I'll be working hard on a short that weekend :( Would have loved to hang.

Well, I am sending off the last 7 min and 30 seconds (Heaviest VFX) to Score and Sound today with the finished VFX and everything completed. Next comes the dream sequence. (Gasps in terror but not as much terror as the wire removal)

On a side note, I just worked out a deal that got me a GH1. I must say Whoah baby! I really love the camera. -Matt

Just got back ffrom Alice. I liked the music in that movie A LOT! Shot some video and stills on the GH1 today as I was waiting for a render.
Here is a still (Hand held with a 50mm f1.4 Nikon Lens) I am amazed the video looks this good as well. I can't wait to try more with it.

I am moving onto more VFX now on Stricken. Here I go back into the editing chamber of glory!

That is my grand daughter Makenzie, Matt's daughter in the above GH1 photo. I love the highlights in her eye.

We are going to make use of many cool lenses on his GH1. We have everything from standard Nikon 50mm f1.4 to a burly 500mm f8 reflector lens. I have a 4/3 adapter on the way for my old amazing Konica AR lenses. They were always such clear sharp lenses to shoot pics with. I am keeping my eyes open for good old M42 stuff too.

I will be fabricating a purpose-built GH1 shouldermount next week. It will have an adjustable distance for the shoulder mount pad, and an X and Z adjustable camera mount. I want it to have removability for the shouder pad and two front handles. I want to have a universal handle on the top to fly it, and build in a mount for a mike in a blimp and/or a light. I want to have long enough tubes to solidly brace any lens I throw on it and still fly the follow focus and the matte box. I want on the bottom under the camera a quick mount for a Manfrotto 501 or similar head. I want a mount for a piggy-back macro camera to shoot the view screen on the back of the GH1 and a mounting position for an RF transmitter to send the image to our HD monitor. Finally, I want a hard position for a battery mount for all needs on the rig.

Oh yeah, I want to build it for as little $ as possible. :D Wish me luck...

Matt is editing the dream sequence after finishing the shower scene. Today he completely finished the title sequence. :)

So....I am ALMOST done with the dream sequence already!!!! WOOHOO!!! This new workflow is SOOO much faster. I am super stoked! Currently working to the Score from Burton's Alice in Wonderland. Alice's Theme is one of my favorite songs now. -Matt

Matt congrats on taking the bull by the horns and making the film yourself, that is very inspirational. I love your trailer and your website!

Thank you, I appreciate the kind words. Tomorrow is my birthday and it marks a year from the first night of filming. It has been a long road. I wake up, work on the movie until I go to sleep and that has been my life for an entire year, but I wouldn't trade the time for ANYTHING. I have formed some of the best relationships and connections through this process and learned SO incredibly much along the way. It is something I recommend to everyone as it has been invaluable.

UPDATE: I have a render going of the shower scene and dream sequence. I hope it turns out well! (Crosses fingers, legs, toes, and eyes)

Hey Matt, did you get Stricken on IMDB before you were done with production? If so, how?

I submitted it as in Pre-Production with my IMDBpro account. I believe I listed an article announcing it that had run in our Fresno Bee. I don't really remember though. It has been a while now. Sorry I am not more help. If I remember, I will let you know. -Matt

UPDATE: My render worked! Making headway!

Imdb and amazon and without a box...or whatever it is called....are all connected now...amazon actually owns imdb....I read that registering for festival submission with without a box seems to garner a page...but can't find the article...it may have been an article by a woman's struggle who did a short called "Firefly"? Not sure.....I'll try to find it

I was just curious because I see movies "in production" and "preproduction" on there all the time. Granted most of those are big studio films, but I have seen some indies on there as well. I just thought it would be cool to get that process started now, if its going to take as long to get on there as some people say it does.

Very Nice, Can you share your scene file?

I do not have the camera with me but I can share a couple things I remember.

I ALWAYS use Black press mode. Detail 0 is..sometimes +2. Cinelike for colors so they pop. Auto knee, 720p 24pn. Master Pedestal -2, everything else normal.
