FEATURE: Stricken the Feature - A Matt Sconce Film

Nice! :) I hope ya'll can get it in! We'll be there this year with NGL :) Totally different film, but still hope to wow people :D

Good luck dude!

If it's at AOF, you can be sure I'll be there!

Matt is in the editing VFX chamber of Glory as I type... He is working on tracking around a scene that involves a window replacement behind an actor that is moving in front of it. He is living in the world of the 'adjust track tab' in Mocha. He has been there all day.

I felt sorry for him and fed him barbequed pork chops, baked potato and veggies for dinner. Yum!

(*Whip snaps*) Back to work! :violin::violin::violin:

Here is the most recent VFX srill from the scene I am working on in Stricken. Lets make a game of this....How many layers are in this shot and what are they?

Sarah-Breaks-Free.jpg

Left wall of room, back wall of room, girl, glass, flying white substance, arm grabbing girl.

Well good job guys. Here is the reveal from the bottom layer up:

Back Wall
Water
Glass
Girl, Gun, and Arm are 1 piece of video
Darkened Girl gun arm video layer masked by window
Sillouhette layer over girl gun arm video for edge blending
Trigger guard on gun
Water
Glass
Left Wall

I wasn't sure about the grabbing arm, but thought I saw a bit of greenscreen halo on its top edge so I included it. Otherwise it was certainly logical to assume it was part of the same shot as the girl. Looks like I got most of the rest of it right!

Well, I am off to do a seminar for 20 people on Acting. It should be fun! Wish me luck and I will let you know how it goes.

You're doing a seminar on acting? You're not an actor though....

Directors don't know anything about acting....haha

I applied a variation of Judith Weston's tools for directors and adapted them to give actors the tools to make direction playable even when faced with a result oriented director. We analyzed effective acting versus ineffective acting and then I gave direction for people's dialogue and monologues. 6 hour class. Full of goodness. I got rave reviews so hopefully I will do another seminar in about 3 months. Fun Fun Fun!

Fair enough... acting seminars are usually about teaching actors methods of acting. As a director, I only need how to communicate a sense of understanding where the actor's character is at the time... they have to put that into play.

But how DO they put it into play?......THAT is what I taught at the seminar. Actors must be able to make your direction workable for them to create an honest performance. I believe in giving them workable information in the first place, but even if a director does not do this for them, after attending my seminar, they have tools to make any direction playable for them. Very important stuff. Judith Weston is amazing at that information. Read Directing Actors if you have not, and you will revolutionize your direction.

Will do.

Though I generally prefer not to get a method from a book ;) I find that it will only work 10% of the time... (generally)

Prepare to be surprised.

Anyway, back to Stricken. I filmed three pickup shots yesterday that were black screens with text in my timeline. The last one will be on Wednesday. I have moved on to the close-up green screen shots of the people hanging from the building. I am working on a workflow to speed up the process of wading through those scenes. After I do, I should be almost done with Reel 3.1 which is one of four Stricken timelines and the most effect intensive.

Back to the workshop for a moment. Here are some of the things I covered and some of the reviews I received:

Well, the "Director's Secrets" Workshop went Great. We filled up the 20 spots and overflowed a bit. I covered Inneffective vs. Effective Acting, What I look for in an audition and how to succeed in any audition, How to get cast again and again, The #1 Mistake Actor's Make, How to Set your Characters Free using the Fishtail method. Extremely good stuff. Here are some comments I recieved from the people who attended -Matt Sconce

"Best acting class ever-and my major was drama. Matt provided solid, memorable tools we can take home and use and gave use great references. Thanks Matt!"-Louise Cleveland

"Loved your class!! Needed very much to hear about fishtail! Helps greatly, putting everything in order! Thanks!" -Rhonda Hedegaard

I thought the workshop was very informative. Matt was very prepared for the class and gave excellent advice for auditioning techniques. Best workshop yet! Thanks! P.S. Very impressed with Matt's knowledge."
-Shannon Sinclear

"Fishtail Rocks Socks!" -Jordan

"Matt- Do this again! Loved the technique for actors." -Jessika Satori

Yesterday, We went out and shot three pickup shots. Here are a couple shots that my dad took of me filming the final pickups.
